> with like talking trees and shit?

> – okay. sounds fun. you'll have to teach me how to play sometime. so how is college going?

I don't keep it a secret that role playing is what my friends and I do on Saturday nights. Not like I bring it up out of the blue, but I don't dodge it if it comes up either.

It definitely is hard to explain to people without any experience with it through, no question there.

 No.219175

I tend to explain it in vague terms and keep the drama relatable.

>A friend said they'd show up and then they didn't and we had to cancel the whole session

>So and so brought their girlfriend and they were pissy all night long

>It's nice that we can finally start playing again, because we've all been so busy over the past few weeks.

They don't need to know what kind of character each person is playing or what monsters they fought, or how one of my friends got into an uncontrollable laughing fit after we derailed the game with a dozen dickjokes in a row.

OWN IT!

Tell them something like "WE SLAY DRAGON WHILE LISTENING AT HEAVY METAL, WE RIDE THE THUNDER WITH AXES IN OUR HANDS, WE BATH IN BLOOD AND HONOUR, HAIL AND KILL MOTHERFUCKER!"

You will maybe look even more stupid but probably more epic than stuttering w-w-we play d-dungeons and d-dragons

Yeah that's probably what I should have said. Board games sounds kind of lame to people like her as well so I figured if I made it sound like there was a purpose to it it would sound less shitty. She also used to do a lot of improv so I thought she might think it was cool.

I already blocked both of them from my Facebook account so hopefully I will never have to go through this embarassment again.

It was a woman.

When they say "oh cool you should teach me how to play sometime" then immediately change the subject, it means they don't give a shit and are trying to get you to shut the fuck up.

Her tone was incredibly flat as well. I don't know why she asked for details if she hated it so much.

Really I am just curious what was so shitty about my explanation. How SHOULD one explain RPGs to people?

>talk about your hobby like it's some terrible secret that people will ridicule you for enjoying

>act shocked when people aren't interested afterwords

The key to making people interested is to be interesting. Stop approaching traditional games as a weird hobby and be proud instead– tell stories and make jokes that they will get and relate to. If people see that it's something you're really interested in they'll be interested too; and if they aren't then screw em and get friends who like you for who you are.

She probably wanted to hear you explain just how nerdy you are so she could laugh about it with her girlfriends later.

Well, don't stutter and stammer and act embarrassed, but yeah. This is more about her. Why were you even in that conversation?

I can't stand social interactions with lower beings. You're almost certainly intellectually superior to her, there's nothing of value that an interaction with someone like that can give you. Just be brisk and dismissive so that the conversation can end quicker, you have a finite amount of hours in your day and your life, it's wasted on plebs. Save it for when you're on your own or among your own kind.

Why do you even associate with them then? Why bother putting in the time of day to accommodate their need for attention when they won't even try to understand you or your hobbies? If this girl thinks that lowly of you and is able to just brush off anything she doesn't want to hear about from you, why bother to begin with?

She's not your friend, and she certainly isn't someone that interested in you romantically. Does she keep you around as a beta orbiter or something? Why do you stay around her?

 No.219360

Most of this thread advice is either paranoid or fucking retarded except that you should take pride in what you do and let that pride come out when you talk about your hobbies. They are YOUR hobbies and if you're going to invest hours upon hours into it then you shouldn't be ashamed of that or let anyone else talk down to you about it.

On the other hand just because a girl asks you something and then changes the subject doesn't mean she's a cunt looking to make fun of you later, don't get paranoid.

You could always lie. Something like "Me and my friends take turns sexually peeing in one another's mouths." would work wonders. See them ask a follow up question to that!

I don't even think they could compare that to a network sitcom.

On another note why do you care what someone who watches the "Big Bang Theory" thinks? That forfeits their integrity as a person entirely.

Or other things like how I used to play card games and he does to so therefore I'm like Sheldon, I don't even.

I actually watched some shows just to see and the Sheldon comparison is just insulting he's an emotionally abused shut-in, the other three is an Indian who is hiding his true self under a mask of politeness, a "nerd" but he's just some self-loathing jackass, and another self-loathing jackass but he's also a Jewish stereotype.

I both watch and enjoy Big Bang Theory. I even own a couple of the T-shirts and a trivia game I got for Christmas.

I know it's terrible but I am attached to it and still find it funny in a weird way.

Maybe it's just sunk cost fallacy, I've watched it so long that I'm used to it. That's not even sunk cost fallacy but fuck it whatever.

The D&D episode made me leave marks in my leg from gripping my thigh in pure cringe. My friend's GF agreed it was the worst thing she'd ever seen.

And my parents have actually told me to "stop being SHeldon" before and a result I sperged out and looked even more autistic as a result.

I really hope the last episode is them coming across Stuart at the comic book store having blown his brains out with a shotgun. I want everyone to act sad as fuck, then I want Sheldon to make some kind of autistic joke like "well now where am I going to buy Captain America comics" and have everyone else glare at him. I want like spattered gore on the ceiling and just random weird closeups as the group looks at each other and realizes the fate of the last actual "nerd" in their group who didn't become a pussy-whipped faggot.

Then skip to like 10 years down the road when they are all trapped in horrible marriages they visit stuart's grave and wonder if they should have an heroed as well.

It will never happen but it would absolutely save the show if it ended like that.

Nice trips.

My favorite part of the show is raging at how pussy whipped and beta the manlet is. Leonard. The one with the hot blonde. The non-jewish one. Took me like four aspects to sort that out since they are basically the same character.

But yeah I remember one episode I saw where the dude wanted to buy an action figure for himself, all the blonde cunt did was LOOK at him and he's like "yeahhh never mind"

And I get really pissed because she's just with him because he thinks she's hot, she makes like half as much money as he does and has like nothing to offer but her tits, and as result he lets her control hsi life.

I know it's just a sitcom but FUCK it pisses me off sometimes. Everyone on that show is a huge pussy cuck.

While BBT was popular, a lot of people told me I looked like Sheldon.

After having finally caved at some point and watched the show, I was very very sad.

My issue with the show is mainly, as I told my mother when she asked me about it, if you get the jokes they're making, they aren't funny. They're just references, at best, at that point.

 No.227516

This isn't really a hard scenario to deal with. I usually have to take an extra step because I generally don't play DnD, but have to use it as a point of comparison. So the conversation usually goes:

>What did you do last weekend?

>Oh I played Pen and Paper games, you know, sorta like DnD

>Okay, I've never done that before

And then depending on their level of interest I'll explain Deadlands or Shadowrun to them, or just ask what they got up to over the weekend. If they don't think highly of it (which almost never happens because I'm in Hipster Mecca so they'll at least "ironically" appreciate it) it doesn't really matter because my interaction with that person is probably going to be pretty limited

I usually just ignore Big Bang Theory references.

That said, I live on the West Coast and work with people who keep Pathfinder and World of Darkness books at their desks, so said conversation almost never happens anymore
