The key to making people interested is to be interesting. Stop approaching traditional games as a weird hobby and be proud instead– tell stories and make jokes that they will get and relate to. This isn't really a hard scenario to deal with. I usually have to take an extra step because I generally don't play DnD, but have to use it as a point of comparison. So the conversation usually goes:
>What did you do last weekend?
>Oh I played Pen and Paper games, you know, sorta like DnD
>Okay, I've never done that before
And then depending on their level of interest I'll explain Deadlands or Shadowrun to them, or just ask what they got up to over the weekend. If they don't think highly of it (which almost never happens because I'm in Hipster Mecca so they'll at least "ironically" appreciate it) it doesn't really matter because my interaction with that person is probably going to be pretty limited
I usually just ignore Big Bang Theory references.
That said, I live on the West Coast and work with people who keep Pathfinder and World of Darkness books at their desks, so said conversation almost never happens anymore
