 No.221875

Some quickstart rules for the new edition of Delta Green just got released.

Seems like they're really trying to divorce DG from Call of Cthulhu (the RPG, not the setting, which would be retarded). They've also ripped off taken the sanity rules from Unknown Armies, and introduced "bonds", some weird variant of the pillars of sanity from Trails of Cthulhu. Speaking of Trails and ripping off, you no longer need to roll your skill for certain clues - if your rating is high enough you get the clue for free.

Character creation does looks a lot faster than CoC, pleasantly enough. It uses character packages, though, so characters will tend to become more cookie-cutter.

Also, Call of Cthulhu general.

So far, DG looks better than CoC 7e.

but i miss the luck skill

 No.221911

Is it possible to rip-off your own rules? Because Greg Stolze wrote both. And as much as I love GUMSHOE it's not as though they invented not-rolling-for-unimportant stuff. Hell, that's kind of a UA thing as well.

Luck getting removed I'm alright with. As it stands it's like they've gotten rid of individual luck stats, and everyone just has a 50% score. Which is fine.

And I think the packages won't limit character diversity too much, since there's no reason you can't just make up your own packages, same way Call of Cthulhu had occupations.

I'm doing a lot of complaining. Mostly I'm pretty hyped for the whole thing. I'm still a little on the fence about the new system, but it does improve some of the problems I have with basic CoC. I'd want to try it out a couple of times before I properly form an opinion though.

>it does improve some of the problems I have with basic CoC

pros

>got rid of resistance tables

>all modifiers in +/- 20/40 increments

>rules for becoming jaded and getting a thousand yard stare

>got rid of unnecessary stats like size

>improved character advancement (gain 1 skill point per session by failing a roll)

>rules for requisitioning gear and favors from the government (I FUCKING LOVE THIS)

>rules for getting fired from your government job

>bonds system allows you to watch your character's personal life slowly disintegrate, adding a mood of dread and nihilism

>got rid of separate skills for punching and kicking (I HATED THAT)

>fast char gen

>can use old CoC books with this game without too much conversion work

cons

>game isn't done yet

>no monsters or spells yet

>i'm iffy about "kill rolls". maybe it works great on the table but i'm not sold on it yet

>I love GUMSHOE

I didn't love ToC's system but the section on mythos gods is amazing and makes the book worth owning all on its own.

For those who don't know, ToC does not just tell you what Yog Sothoth is and give you its stats. It gives you a list of 8 or 9 possible interpretations of each god that the GM can choose. Go with the traditional concept or…

>Yog-Sothoth is a nebula cloud

>Yog-Sothoth is a fifthdimensional hyper-sphere

>Yog-Sothoth is the emergent consciousness of zeropoint energy

>Yog-Sothoth is the name of the current Aeon, the product of two of Nyarlothotep's aspects fucking each other and making a psychedelic nightmare death baby

So you can imagine that ancient texts about Yog are probably primitive man's attempts to explain shit way outside of their understanding, anthropomorphizing weird extradimensional forces. It mixes science with far out mysticism. It's really fucking cool and the players never know what something like "Nyarlothotep" actually means even though they've read Lovecraft.

OP, have you played it yet? Do you have a report to share?

I have not, my good anon. Because I have no group to play neo-DG with. :(

Arc Dream tempted me enough that I threw a few bucks at their kickstarter, though. I'm seriously considering running a one-shot using the Mythic GM Emulator, just to take the new rules for a spin.

Hell, I might do it tomorrow.

That's not a bad idea. If you do it, come back and let us know how it plays out.

The Good News

They released a new player's guide that's in a more final form

The Bad News

Arc Dream has been compromised. See image

Maybe that's for when you see so much mind-shattering shit you start to experience gender dysphoria or something like that?

 No.223252

>>223246

In older editions of CoC, gender dysphoria really was a form of insanity you could suffer. No joke. I think I read it in 4e There's no fucking way you could get away with publishing that now.

Kind of funny though.

>I saw a Shoggoth so now I wear women's clothing to help me deal with the trauma.

>i'm iffy about "kill rolls". maybe it works great on the table but i'm not sold on it yet

I'll admit that I'm sold on it. Guns are meant to be terrifying weapons, and especially so for automatics and explosives. So having a flat chance of it straight up killing you dead fits it well (makes my idea for a Colombian cult that fronts as a cartel even better.) I assume that the attack still has to be a successful hit before rolling Lethality either way. And the Lethality of a weapon doesn't guarantee it as a surefire weapon against the Unnatural i.e. the monster at the end of the quickstart adventure, which heals 1 hp every round even after 0 HP. the only surefire way to kill it is with the gas provided.

Honestly, I liked the original version better. I prefer the book stripped of all art and flavor text. Just the rules and examples. It cuts the page count down a lot, makes reference easier, and it doesn't take 4 seconds to load every page with high res layered images.

No rules for magic.

That's curious.

 No.223679

>>223677

>wanting to use magic

Mythos collaborator detected.

But really, it's just because these are the quickstart rules. Rules about how magic works and exactly what stats horrible monsters should have don't really need to be in there.

>>221976

Even if you're not a fan of GUMSHOE, I think most of the Trail books are worth it even as inspiration for running other Mythosy games. At least to pirate and have a look through.

>>223233

>expecting people who spend their time poking Mythos horrors to be mentally normal

I found the 7th Edition pretty satisfying, they got rid of the resistance table already. I am quite interested in DG, but I will wait and see.

Trails of Cthulhu never found a place in my heart, though it has some nice concepts, I don't like the GUMSHOE system.

>sex: <insert non-binary identity here>

Well, fuck. Pirating it is, then.

I was starting to suspect something was up when they purposefully started using grammatically incorrect pronouns in the beta rules. The clunky "he or she", the White Wolfian "she" or the flat-out retarded "they". (They finally settled for the first in Need to Know.)

It's he, you politically correct faggots.
