I actually made up a system that I think would have been cool for Broquest. If I may be a narcissistic ass for a bit and talk at length, I'll tell you about it. Wall of text incoming, will not blame you for skipping it.
So, your party has relationships. Kinda like Fire Emblem, but since bro-hood is so much more important in Broquest, there's a fair bit more intricacy to it than just "have these guys talk and they get a stat boost". There are four levels of relationship: Stranger, Acquaintance, Friend, and Bro. Some party members, like Lifelong Friend, Hotblooded Rival, or Loyal Pet will start at Acquaintance or Friend level with you (the player character), but none start at Bro level, and most start at Stranger. It is possible for you to get Bro level relationships with every single party member, but doing so may lock you off from getting Bro status with others (Suave Devil will lock Paladin and vice versa, any character requiring romantic relation to get Bro status will lock Amazon and Catgirl, Loyal Pet and Catgirl lock each other, etc.). It's also worth noting that there are a few characters who will start at Acquaintance level with each other due to simple good chemistry (Vixen and Archmage, Mechanic and Monk, Catgirl and Druid, Loyal Pet and everyone except Catgirl, etc.), and some party members just don't make friends well. While each party member has at least one other member they can become Bros with (and as previously stated, they can ALL become Bros with you), most party members will have one or more other members who they can't get past Acquaintance with. Especially distant or dickish party members may not even be able to get that far.
So, what are the benefits? Well, Acquaintance level gets you a slight stat boost to both characters and sometimes a small passive ability (EG Cleric Kid will heal X% more health when healing someone who he(?) is Acquaintances with). Some player character abilities also work better on party members you have higher bro level with, so that's another benefit. Friend level increases the stat boost and unlocks another ability, sometimes passive, sometimes active, but always basically the same no matter who they're Friends with. Examples: Hotblooded Rival gets the passive "No one hurts him/her but me!", which gives him a large damage boost against any enemy who has done damage to anyone he's Friends with, and makes him go berserk if someone he's Friends with goes down. Suave Devil gets the active "Dark Bargain", which drains some of one of his Friend's health in exchange for either a powerful AoE attack (if the Friend is a caster) or a massive stat buff for both Devil and his Friend (if the Friend is a fighter). Bard gets the active "Power Ballad", which buffs all his Friends and Bros at once. As for Bro level, it's worth noting that there are a very limited number of party members who can Bro up with each other, but doing so not only exponentially increases the Friend passive buff, but also unlocks a unique ability, which only that Bro combination can produce. This can be basically anything, from a party-wide heal/revive, to an instant kill move, to temporary invincibility for both Bros, to the nastiest status effect inflicter you've ever seen, to a big fat fuck you nuke. One way or another, using any of these attacks takes a fair amount of resources from both Bros, and uses both their turns, so they are best reserved for bosses and desperate situations.
