Each class becomes a different "prestige" class based on what they build into? Pretty easy.

I like how the Soldier's split is "Honor" or "Failure". Having an anti-prestige class that you get into if you fail a quest or have something bad happen to you is a nice idea.

I'm told Burning Wheel does that.

Well for starters I would need to have a vanilla squid in the middle, and then have the base classes branch off, then the additional ones so it's more appealing to the eye.

 No.225229

I've just thought of something unrelated

7 components - Brawl, Stealth, Knowledge, Piety, Magic, Social. Now let's combine them

Brawl+Brawl = Fighter

Brawl+Stealth = Rogue

Brawl+Knowledge = Gunslinger (Gadgeteer?)

Brawl+Piety = Paladin

Brawl+Magic = Ranger

Brawl+Social = Swashbuckler

Stealth+Stealth = Scout

Stealth+Knowledge = Thief

Stealth+Piety = ??? (Maybe cultist or assassin fit better here?)

Stealth+Magic = Assassin

Stealth+Social = Spy

Knowledge+Knowledge = Scholar

Knowledge+Piety = Sage

Knowledge+Magic = Wizard

Knowledge+Social = Diplomat

Piety+Piety = Cleric

Piety+Magic = Cultist

Piety+Social = Deacon

Magic+Magic = Sorcerer

Magic+Social = Witch (?)

Social+Social = Merchant

>>225229

Stealth + Piety = Roofwalker. "Roofwalker" being a group of fanaticists who believe in taking pilgrimages across the city by walking "under no cover", i.e., across the rooftops. Bonuses to acrobatics and a few minor cleric-type spells, but doesn't do as much stealing or murdering as the other classes.

>>225230

I was trying to think of something more common. Piety implies the class is religious, and Stealth implies it is either subversive, or otherwise discreet. Now I have some ideas:

Heretic - good character motivation, but I'm not sure about his abilities. Maybe he just worships bad, wrong gods?

Inquisitor - NO ONE EXPECTS MONTY PYTHON REFERENCE

Assassin - I really like that idea because they were religious fanatics. And Ranger can be probably moved to Stealth+Magic. But what to do with Brawl+Magic? Some gay Mage Knight? Undead Hunter?

Another idea I just had is to have two sides to each component, combining it with the idea from OP.

Brawl can be either Brute Strength or Speed and Finesse

Stealth can be Crime or Reconnaissance. Or maybe Theft or Murder?

Knowledge is Technology or Nature.

Piety is Good or Bad gods. Or Gods and Spirits (of nature, of ancestors, of places, whatever). Or Gods from local Pantheon and Ancient Eldritch Shit. Or Jesus and Devil.

Magic is Dark or Light (boooring), Hermetic or Shamanism.

Social is Business Acumen or Charisma.

I've always enjoyed the idea of divergent class paths based on actions and accomplishments.

The Knight who slayed the mighty Wyrm and bathed in its blood becomes the Dragonslayer.

The Rogue who killed the king becomes the Master Assassin

The Wizard who accelerated his studies through dark pacts with infernal beings becomes the Demonologist, and so on.

This is actually one of my favorite things about Dungeon World, even though it's a bit ham-fistedly done. The idea of characters earning titles that give them special abilities based on what they did is awesome.

 No.225301

Hm.. maybe it is me, but Assassin fits more with Stealth+Piety, mostly because assassins were mostly religious zealots.

That was my original thought as well, and I don't even know why I put it on Stealth+Magic. I think it should be changed to following:

Brawl+Stealth = Ninja

Stealth+Piety = Assassin

Stealth+Magic = Cultist (or Druid?)

Piety+Magic = Warlock (or Druid?)

Stealth+Magic as Cultist works with me, as it's a religion that has to stay under wraps lest the greater populace putting you to the stake.

You ever played Final Fantasy Tactics Advance? The class system there is a pretty good place to get some ideas.

All right, check this out:

1. Press Shift+F4

2. Copy everything from http://pastebin.com/R6sqTpsi into window.

3. Press Run.

4. Press a button that just appeared

5. Make a class based on resulting combination.

Note that this is only for Firefox-based browsers. Not sure how to run it in the Chrome.

I think Tabula Rasa, that failed sci-fi MMO by Richard Garriot, had a pretty cool class divergence system - there was no early game class choice, everyone started as recruit, then on level 5 you could pick between combat-centric soldier or support specialist. Of course, you picked the class on your own, the branching didn't depend on what you did the most.

This reminds me, was there ever a class-based PnP RPG where you could branch out into different classes like that?

>>225385

While GURPS is classless system, Dungeon Fantasy series of splatbooks have rules for using character templates as full-on classes. You can start as 125-point character and then buy stuff during game with experience points either from 250-point "pure class" template or from 125-point lens to make a combination class. So, you can start as Skirmisher and either buy your future abilities from Swashbuckler template, or he can try and become Skirmisher/Psi or Skirmisher/Burglar, or whatever.

I actually made up a system that I think would have been cool for Broquest. If I may be a narcissistic ass for a bit and talk at length, I'll tell you about it. Wall of text incoming, will not blame you for skipping it.

So, your party has relationships. Kinda like Fire Emblem, but since bro-hood is so much more important in Broquest, there's a fair bit more intricacy to it than just "have these guys talk and they get a stat boost". There are four levels of relationship: Stranger, Acquaintance, Friend, and Bro. Some party members, like Lifelong Friend, Hotblooded Rival, or Loyal Pet will start at Acquaintance or Friend level with you (the player character), but none start at Bro level, and most start at Stranger. It is possible for you to get Bro level relationships with every single party member, but doing so may lock you off from getting Bro status with others (Suave Devil will lock Paladin and vice versa, any character requiring romantic relation to get Bro status will lock Amazon and Catgirl, Loyal Pet and Catgirl lock each other, etc.). It's also worth noting that there are a few characters who will start at Acquaintance level with each other due to simple good chemistry (Vixen and Archmage, Mechanic and Monk, Catgirl and Druid, Loyal Pet and everyone except Catgirl, etc.), and some party members just don't make friends well. While each party member has at least one other member they can become Bros with (and as previously stated, they can ALL become Bros with you), most party members will have one or more other members who they can't get past Acquaintance with. Especially distant or dickish party members may not even be able to get that far.

So, what are the benefits? Well, Acquaintance level gets you a slight stat boost to both characters and sometimes a small passive ability (EG Cleric Kid will heal X% more health when healing someone who he(?) is Acquaintances with). Some player character abilities also work better on party members you have higher bro level with, so that's another benefit. Friend level increases the stat boost and unlocks another ability, sometimes passive, sometimes active, but always basically the same no matter who they're Friends with. Examples: Hotblooded Rival gets the passive "No one hurts him/her but me!", which gives him a large damage boost against any enemy who has done damage to anyone he's Friends with, and makes him go berserk if someone he's Friends with goes down. Suave Devil gets the active "Dark Bargain", which drains some of one of his Friend's health in exchange for either a powerful AoE attack (if the Friend is a caster) or a massive stat buff for both Devil and his Friend (if the Friend is a fighter). Bard gets the active "Power Ballad", which buffs all his Friends and Bros at once. As for Bro level, it's worth noting that there are a very limited number of party members who can Bro up with each other, but doing so not only exponentially increases the Friend passive buff, but also unlocks a unique ability, which only that Bro combination can produce. This can be basically anything, from a party-wide heal/revive, to an instant kill move, to temporary invincibility for both Bros, to the nastiest status effect inflicter you've ever seen, to a big fat fuck you nuke. One way or another, using any of these attacks takes a fair amount of resources from both Bros, and uses both their turns, so they are best reserved for bosses and desperate situations.

>>225482

This leads to the question of how do you upgrade your Bro level? It depends. Sometimes, it's just a matter of progressing in the story as party members grow closer to you, friendships forged in the fires of combat. Sometimes you'll have to do a side quest or accomplish a particular goal to upgrade your bro status. Sometimes special events in combat will increase Bro level (EG you need to show Dick-ass Thief and NRAFS's that they're not disposable to you by reviving them after they go down). It's also worth noting that Bro level can effect the story, and your Bro level with one character may effect another character's arc. The most obvious example is the Lifelong Friend and how his disease can be cured. And let's hope you find a way to do it, because if you don't, he WILL die before the game is over, and beating the BBEG with an incomplete party is ridiculously difficult. Also, curing him gives him Bro status with you, so that's nice too. So, the non-party-dependent way of curing him is to see his family and talk to them at length. This unlocks a long, resource consuming quest to find a cure. This is the option you only take if you have to. However, if you have certain other party members and are Friends with them (or they're Friends with Lifelong Friend), you can do something a bit less painful. Paladin or Cleric might be able to aid the curequest with healing magic. Gunslinging Loner, Catgirl, or Amazon might know of some herbs or medical techniques from their homeland that might be useful. Mechanic or Time Mage might be able to build prosthetics to replace diseased body parts, given enough time and a good, well-stocked workshop. And if all else fails, Suave Devil might be able to make you a deal… though you probably won't like it, and he'll probably screw you over if you don't get Bro status with him by the end of the game.

So yeah, all this is just a fantasy that will never actually be made into a game, but it's nice to dream.
