So /tg/, i have a connective tissue disorder called ehlers danlos syndrome, specifically the kind that effects tasks that require fine motor control. Like painting figures. I love 40k. I've read a few codexes, a whole shit ton of novels, stuff like that. I just got a job which provides disposable income and i was thinking of buying a small squad of marines to slowly start building an army. I've never painted minis and i dont know if my hands could handle a loy of detailed painting. I was wondering if you guys could advise me on what i could do. I would love to play 40k but this is the biggest barrier for me. Also newbie recommendations in general would be appreciated!

Certain armies are easier to paint and have less detail than others is a good starting point to keep in mind. Depending on how high quality you want your models to look after painting, certain armies also look good with basic colors. Are you set on marines or are you undecided.

Sure they are cliche but I think Space Marine could be up your alley. They are a favorite of newbies not just because of marketing but because of their wide surface. A rather simple marine color scheme might be something doable for you.

Alternate option: necrons, painting the old fashionned way, which is to say mostly plain metallic colors and neon green.

I was actually going to suggest necrons as well just because they look decent with a basic coat of any metal.

 No.225558

Crons and Astartes are your go-to for easy painting, and both have the benefit of being on the strong side. If you really don't think you can handle it or want to play an army that needs more precision to paint, look around on ebay for options.

Just wait another year or two, GeeDubs is bound to start selling pre-painted minis.

Also, you are actually in no way required to paint your plastic crack to play with it. Anyone who disagrees with this is not only obviously on the Spectrum, but also a Citadel shi–BLAM!

If you don't consider painting the army part of the fun or it's too distressing, consider to use a good painting service. You can get your army painted on commission with a good level. So you can enjoy the game, having a nice army and don't get subject to the issue of painting the army yourself.

The new Start Collecting boxes are excellent value for money and they come with a rules card to field everything in it as a single formation. I don't know how well the rest add up, but the Tau box at least can be made into a 500 point force, which is the smallest standard size. They'd also be a great choice to buy for an allied force if you ever felt like trying out a different army once your main has grown a bit.

If you can find someone to build your models for you, ask if they can magnetise some of them them. In a squad of Tactical Marines, you'd only need three to be magnetised (One for a special weapon, one for a heavy weapon, one for sergeant equipment), since the rest are only going to be using bolters. Then you can swap equipment around as you desire, instead of having options glued permanently to your men.

(I don't know how bad your EDS is, but I presume it's not going to be easy for you to carefully drill holes into little plastic models and then superglue tiny magnets into them the right way, which is why I suggested finding someone else to do it)

When building, think about how easily you're going to be able to paint your dudes. If you glue a gun into someone's hands and it's held tightly to the chest, you're then going to have difficulty painting that chest, so leave some parts unassembled before painting.

Get a Helping Hand for painting. It's a little metal stand with some clips to hold your parts. Useful for anyone, invaluable I'm sure for someone with a disability.

Make a wet pallet for your paints. I use a disposable plastic plate with a couple of sheets of wet paper towels in it, then a sheet of wax paper on top. The water very slowly seeps through the wax paper, keeping your paint from drying out as you work.

Vallejo Game Color paints are great. They come in dropper bottles, so they aren't going to dry out on you.

In terms of painting Marines, Necrons and Space commies are the way to go

Crunch-wise, Vainilla Marine Codex is perfect for newbies, with chapter tactics giving you 6 different buffs and play-styles for you, Necrons on the other hand are more hard to kill than Marines with their Reanimation Protocolos on every single unit

Correcting myself there about the Tactical Marines. Obviously if you run one full squad of ten, you'll only need three magnetised. But if you wanted to split them into two squads of five, then you'll probably need more. I'm sure if you find someone who's done this before, he can figure it out for you.

They literally just put out a new starter painting set on preorder. 3 new snapfit marines (looks way better than the old ones too) and ultrasmurf paints. If you don't want to paint smurfs, you could just add in a couple of other paints for the main armour colour.

Try out these to see how well the painting goes, then buy some more.

I don't know, most of the time you probably won't be swapping tactical loadouts that much. The Sarges are pretty much always best cheap and naked, apart form maybe a combi gun. For special weapons, You'll likely want to save the gravguns, meltas and flamers for more mobile units like bikes and droppod Sternguard, so it's probably safe enough to just make plasma. For Heavy weapons, you're better off without them most of the time, they're better for devastators anyway.

If you decide to continue though, it might be a good idea to magnetise Devastators and Sternguard though.

For simple color scheme ala necron/tyranid armies you can:

Base/primary spray, no motor control required.

Wash whole model with darker color, no motor control required.

Drybrush highlights, requires zero motor control so long as you get 95% of the paint off the brush and go at it for 10 minutes.

Congratulation you have a tournament pass army.

Get into Epic 40K - the small minis are much more forgiving to a real basic dry-brush level painting while still looking OK. Trade off is you're still gonna need to handle the minis during assembly etc and they're much smaller. Could someone help with the fine motor control assembly like gluing a dozen or so 6mm figures to a handle so you could do the paining then help with basing?

You forgot the part about having to scrounge Ebay and fleeting recasters to actually get Epic models ;__;

As an accupational therapist who also loves his minis my suggestion would be to go see one, specifically with the goal of painting, with the possibilty of modifying paint stations (seating, vices, easy reach etc.) or brushes to help you get better control for painting tasks. Moreover get fellow fa/tg/uys to help you with task analysis for painting to see which aspects of the task need to be modified in order for you to be able to complete them (which is good cause apart from the occasional dickhead most of /tg/ likes getting shit done in regards to gaming). Obviously finding someone to do said modifications and funding them are another issue but if brainstormed properly (mods, grips for paintbrushes, best minitures to start painting on to develope skills etc.) I dont see it being to much of a hassle.

Hey guys, thanks for all the advice! So I do kind of feel like I would be the one to paint my marines. Maybe I'd commission somebody to do something special like a HQ I like, but besides that I'd like to paint my own minis.

You guys who recommended me Space Marines were right on the money. I'm a horrible fanboy for Humanity. I'd like maybe a Dark Angels or Raven Guard army for loyalists. For traitors I'd probably either do Khornate or Nurgle themed armies.

I'm going off of pure enjoyment here. I don't know what's high tier or shit tier or whatever. I don't care quite honestly. I just want to make an army I think is cool (and strategically sound of course) and fight some fuckers.

Again, sorry for the delay. Despite having a handicap that fucks with the amount of pain I experience on a daily basis (more time spent doing physical stuff = more pain) I do closing shift at a Wendy's 3-4 times a week. Not the best combo but it's helped my work ethic out a lot.

Anyways I am monitoring this thread! I promise! Thank you guys for the advice. I think I might take a chance and see what my FLGS has in stock in the way of Space Marines.
