What's the point of playing tabletop games or GMing if you don't have money?

I want to GM, but I can't because i'm a fuckup who's making only $19/hour in a starting job rather than at least $35/hour from the start in the job I studied for.

How do I GM when i'm not making a decent amount of money? Should I quit the games i'm playing in because i'm not making lots of money and focus solely on studying?

Is tabletop games for people who have plenty of money or for dirt poor people who can't move ahead in life?

What do?

All you need to be a GM is a notebook, a copy of the rules, and about an hour of free time per session for prep. PDFs are easily pirated and a set of dice will run you about $6.

If you want a game that offers cheap physical copies, check out Basic Fantasy RPG. Shit's about $4 per rulebook so you can easily supply your whole table and grab a couple premade adventures to run for about $30.

 No.226638

The hell?

All good RPG material can be obtained through piracy, and a fair bit is just plain given away for free.

You don't need money, you just need some spare time, effort and means of communication. You can play with graph paper and chess pieces, cheap Chinese figurines or rocks, and use a laptop as a DM's screen and dice roller. The only really hard part is getting everyone together regularly, online or IRL.

Playing games is a hobby and a way to spend time and have fun.

I wish, but I don't have enough money to move. Not enough money to be able to get somewhere else to live. I don't even have a solid year of work experience.

not sure if bait like "why play if life is meaningless, wah wah ", but anyway ill bite.

there are a lot of free roleplaying games for the economically challenged sector of population. it has been a thing since the begining of the 2000s, most of these games are barebones, but the thing is that it demands that you exercise your imagination and creativity, so i see it as a plus.

just the top of my head i can give you some examples:

if you can afford a set or two of polyhedral dice:

+ Basic fantasy (http://www.basicfantasy.org)

+ microlite20 (http://microlite20.net/)

cant afford dice or not available? then you can do with d6, steal from monopily or other game:

+ west end games d6 is ogl now (https://ogc.rpglibrary.org/index.php?title=OpenD6)

+ GURPS lite if you dare also (http://www.sjgames.com/gurps/lite/3e/gurpslite.pdf)

+Risus (http://www222.pair.com/sjohn/risus.htm)

i hope this takes care of all your concerns, piracy also works

 No.226646

I already have plenty of pirated books. It's just that whenever I think about GMing, i get told not too because it takes up too much time aside from games I already play in.

That time should be used for studying to get a higher paying job. I hate myself for being such a lazy piece of shit that i'm not moving up faster in the work place after only six months. I also hate myself for not passing some exams which can get me a $35/hr job from the start FROM THE START with what I studied.

Convince me to never think about GMing or playing tabletop games again so that I may get rid of all my hobbies and become austitically dedicated to making money instead.

Firstly; what >>226636 said.

Secondly;

Do you have free time? Well, you have enough to bitch at us, so probably.

Do you have a table or something that could function as a table? Probably.

Do you have chairs, something similar, or is your table or table like object low enough to the ground, where you can sit on the floor and still use it? Most likely.

Do you have access to the internet? Obviously.

Do you have a group of people willing to put up with your Boo-Hoo-Look-At-Me assholery? Only you can answer that.

Look at that! You have everything you need to GM! You didn't even need to buy anything! Wow! Zero dollars above your well above minimum wage earnings spent!

They want pizza? Get them to buy it! Problem solved!

Need paper? Use napkins! Walk into a Wendy's take a few handfuls of those nice yellow napkins and just walk right out. Who's going to stop you? Or just buy some copy paper, you silly faggot.

Need a pen? Steal one from your work, no one will notice, they're all to busy talking about you behind your back to pay any attention to what you actually do anymore.

Look! I just solved three more problems! Before you even brought them up! Because I'm a motherfucking wizard! I drink piss, and shit blood! It's fucking magic, you bitch!

If you are dedicated to making money but have no plans to spend it, you are dedicating your life to being a pawn in someone else's game. Your entire philosophy is absurd and unhealthy. If you genuinely feel this way all the time, then, and I'm being completely serious here, you need therapy.

Are you out of your mind, OP? You absolutely do not need money for tabletop roleplaying games. For Christ's sake, people in prison play them with home-made spinners because they're forbidden to have dice. Plenty of good rulesets are available for free online, and piracy is always an option. I play and run Pathfinder more than any other game (yeah, I know), and I don't even own a copy of the book because they put everything online for free.

Like anything, you can spend as much money as you want on ttrpgs, but you really don't need to, and honestly, a big library of rpg books has no correlation at all with good gaming in my experience.

Miniatures games are another story - they can get very expensive very easily if you're a collector type. If you're careful, disciplined, and frugal, though, you won't break the bank. Still far, far more expensive than roleplaying, but easily within reach of a $19/hr wage. That's more than I make, and I have more miniatures than I will ever paint, and I buy more all the time.

 No.226703

>>226694

Yeah, no way OP is poorer than me and I've been GMing for years. It can absolutely be done for almost nothing. I guess the most expensive requirement is having a place to play, but unless you're literally homeless, you have that anyway. Your rent or house payment won't go up over having a few friends over once a week.

With that said though, I have less poor friends who tend to supply the drinks, snacks, and entire game night meals in exchange for my DMing, so I might have advantages OP doesn't. Still, I'd happily run hours and hours of game without all that if they didn't bring it, it's not necessary. I'm just not they type to turn down free food and drink if it's there. If nobody else brings food and you're the type who just can't go for more than three or four hours with eating, your results may vary.

This is coming from a poor college student.

How to RPG on the cheapo:

>Dice Roller - Free (If you have a decent smartphone from at least 2-3 years back at most.)

>RPG rules - Between Free - $80. One PHB is enough, two is handy. A repeatable piece of data that can be passed along your players is fantastic.

>Location - Your local library, college common room, project room, or dwelling has a table and chairs for people to have.

>Paper - Copy paper's about at least $5/pack of 100, and notepads the size of the fucks I give on a regular basis are at least $4.50/200 sheets.

>Pens/Pencils - Cheapo. One pack is usually $10, and would last you months of writing.

>People - This is the hard part.

How the fuck does the amount of money you make affect whether or not you should play or GM a game?

Your hobbies aren't going to make you money either way, but they will keep you sane.

Studying harder and dedicating all your free time to work will only make you want to buy an expensive gun to blow your brains out.

And fuck you OP. I barely make $15/hr and I'm grateful for that.

 No.226762

Isn't the point of living making large amounts of money? Money is everything after all.

There are many days when I wish we were less human and more mechanical and robotic in nature. Being human is full of inefficiencies like emotions and the like. That gets in the way of completing our tasks, primarily making money.

>>226683

Therepy is the worst thing to seek out. These therapists report people to the government. People who seek therepy lose rights, their jobs, and any jobs they might want in the future. This means no more money to be made, no more point in living, and eventually suicide.

Therepy = suicide

Okay fine, OP, I'll give you what you want: blow your brains out. Just end it all. Put a gun to the roof of your mouth, and pull that trigger.

You come here whining about how you don't have enough money to GM, which totally isn't a real problem. Then when people give you solutions you ignore them, then start on this "Tell me to never GM again!" ego-tripping bitchfest.

Protip: /tg/ isn't where you should go to get people to tell you to stop playing games.

I know people who make half your wage and still play games.

You don't want our help. You just want to be an asshole.

Go back to where you belong. >>>/r9k/

What fucking marxist divise class-warfairy philsophical post-existentialist garbage have you been eating, OP?

Tabletop, either playing or GMing, is THE cheapest kind of gaming fun you can have. If you have temporary acess to a computer, some sheets of paper and a pen you are already able to play.

>What's the point of playing tabletop games or GMing if you don't have money?

The same if you have money: To have fun/be entertained.

>How do I GM when i'm not making a decent amount of money?

The exact same way as if you were making lots of money.

>Should I quit the games i'm playing in because i'm not making lots of money and focus solely on studying?

Quitting games is going to actually improve your income compared to just studying harder and taking a relaxing breather with gaming fun?

Like, isn't being a worthless lazy self-hating piece of shit a better alternative?

And why the fuck do you need more money, anyway? Money is nothing but means to an end. Do you have an end in mind, or are you just trying really hard to be as self-loathing as humanly possible?

>Is tabletop games for people who have plenty of money or for dirt poor people who can't move ahead in life?

Tabletop gaming is, surprise suprise, for everyone.

>What do?

Change your food and water suppliers.
