40k discussion, as usual.

News these days seem to be AoS, AoS, and more AoS. Guess we'll have to wait until GW decides they actually DO want to make money.

Still rumours of a new 30k boardgame box, probably next year, and Lost Patrol makes a return soon.

Also, pick the one BFF you'd most like to have from 40k. Kharn is a nice guy, right?

How popular are box sets like these? I got the impression that Deathwatch sold very well (I saw a third party retailer tweeting a photo of their fourth Royal Mail truck collecting outgoing deliveries on release day), but what about the rest, like that assassins game?

Do people buy them for the game itself, or just as a slightly cheaper way to get the models?

So, anon, i have a problem to small for separate thread.

So, i have campaign of Rogue Trader, pretty nice, but wrote myself into a corner few session ago.

I was trying to fix it, and now we have fucking street martial arts tournament on the planet-city.

Can you help me and generate some thematic martial arts for 40K, pretty please?

I'm at my wits end…

Space Hulk sold very well as far as I know, as well as BaC and Deathwatch. Not too sure on the Assassin game.

SH and BaC were pretty fun as boardgames go, and Lost Patrol has the nostalgia factor just like SH so I guess that will be a success as well.

The models usually are cheaper in the games as well, but apart from BaC and Deathwatch, I doubt they'd get lots of sales for the models alone. Especially LP since it just has old models anyways.

>>227220

And it will be limited to stores this time too, I suppose. And there's only one store in my country. Seriously GW, get with the times.

I want to get started with 40k and was thinking of starting with orks, are they viable as an army, or is there a better starting point for new players?

Also, will regular enamel paint work well or do I have to buy the overpriced as shit GW paint?

 No.227319

Any advice as building space marines as death watch the best way I see to do it is the formation with stern and vanguards and maybe an inquisitional detachment.

They did extensively use vindicators to ambush and snipe superheavies in the latest HH book. Driving up with a regular tank doesn't really feel like their style compared to tank destroyer ambushes. Otherwise it's like the other non says, whatever fits your list.

>>227310

Orks really suck, sorry man. You should only start them if you really like their aesthetic and don't mind being destroyed by most every other list, or if you know you'll be playing with people where you'll able to mod your own rules or something to be adequately decent.

If you do want to play them, the best list you can get will be something between spamming the Bullyboyz (15 MANZ) in battlewagons or simply using Zhadsnark to spam troop bikers, with rokkit/skorcha buggies and tankbustas in trukks or BWs. The 400 point bigmek Stompa from the FW dreadmob is also pretty nice.

>>227319

Just wait for it, I'm pretty sure they'll release a minidex for them whenever they release Genestealer cults as a standalone army.

 No.227330

Could anyone tell me how strict I should make a Commissar when dealing with a cowardly character who happens to also be somewhat of a great shot/elite? One of the players in Only War is playing as some cowardly soldier with a shit WS but a great BS who tends to flank or run from enemies who get to close to try and set up a better position. I wanted to see if Commissars might give some leniency to someone like this. I know it depends on the person in question, but what about the average commissar? Only reason I ask is because someone new joined our group and seemed to get a little asshurt that this guy was not executed by a commissar for his cowardice.

Commissars BLAM for fleeing the scene of battle, not moving to a better position. The ones that don't tend to get mowed down by tragic friendly fire instances. Also, as a general rule, executing other party members is a dick move and shouldn't be one you consider, in-universe justification or no.

 No.227336

>>227330

How do you even evaluate the average commissar though? If we go by Cain's words, a lot of them tend to be very blamm-happy, but also typically very short lived.

Assuming the commissar in question knows the trooper reasonably well to recognize his preference for relocating and sniping, and doesn't suspect he'll actually desert, then there shouldn't be much problem.

I mean, summary blamming is supposed to be used to enforce morale in pitched battles by executing deserters, not killing people for trying to fight cleverly.

IG is pretty solid, yea. The actual DKoK lists aren't too fabulous, although they do get +1WS and have great arty, but if you mix and match them with some regular IG detachments or just play them straight as the regular IG codex, they are pretty decent.

You'll probably want lots of tanks, Vets in Chimeras or Valkyries, Vendettas, Wyverns and possibly Rapiers.

As for cheaper Death Korps, Zanchui has most of them at decent prices and usually in very good quality.

That is what I was thinking. The guy's character is essentially a coward who stays to fight for his friends and to help them so they won't get left behind. He may run when the enemy get's close, but he always shoots back or tries to outflank them when doing so.

This new guy was saying the commissar would command him to charge into melee or else get blammed.

I remember playing an undivided leaning Khorne human berserker character from some feral world. Generally the other players would shit on him both in game and out of game since they thought it was pointless to play a human character if you could play space marines. My character had the advantage though of being stealthy and also able to hide in plain site by blending in well enough. The only friend, as much as heretics can be friends with each other at least, was a chaos techmarine who ended up that way from respect by saving each other a few times. When it came time to determine the "leader", the expected choice was an undivided champion. He ended up saying one to many a thing and got challenged and killed by my human character which ended up going into some speech about how he relies too much on his enhancements to fight which makes him unworthy. The other characters left it at that since the chosen was originally the best duelist they had. It ended up with my character becoming a daemon prince and not much else happened after that.

I also forgot to add that the tensions can also cause a lot of drama out of game if you are not careful. The chosen's player got a little angry that a human beat his space marine. This kind of ties back into the idea of player dynamics really being different in only war considering there are marine and humans both running around together which is bound to lead into some drama shit.

Why would the imperial guard, spess muhreens and sister's of battle ever fight each other? I've just been playing Soulstorm and the campaign map has them all fighting each other constantly, as far away from pretty much every other race as possible. I know the game is considered shitty by Dawn of War standards but surely there has to be some reason the three armies who all worship the God Emperor of Mankind would start killing each other.

 No.227517

Imperial guard often end up fighting Space Marines (well, getting slaughtered more like).

Between being suspected of heresy when they're not, Marines being dicks because the guard might rat them out to the Inquisition for the various shit marines do, etc…

(That's actually the reason in Dark Crusade and Soulstorm IIRC, the Bloody Magpies are shady as shit and are in those place to investigate and possibly hide/destroy relics of their chapter, and it's confirmed by DoW II)

Add the Sororitas, who depends of the Ecclesiarchy and not of the Administratum, and that everyone sees as fanatics (which in 40k is telling something), for whom guardsmen are never pure enough and while space marines were an holy work of the emperor modern chapters can be seen as mutation prone abomination made by the AdMech.

Frankly it's a surprise the SoB can cooperate with anyone.

>>227512

It's more of a jurisdiction thingy, Adeptus Astartes is autonomous from the Adeptus Admistratum and pretty much do as they want, while the Adepta Sororitas depends from the Adeptus Ministorum which is a completely different branch of the Imperium, not even members of the Adeptus Terra, just like the Mechanicus.

Isn't there some dialogue when you do a headquarters assault? I would hope there's something in the exchange to justify the conflict, probably to do with everyone being too damn stubborn to back down.

 No.227573

>>227560

Pretty much that, yea. As far as I recall, all the factions tried to get the others to back down, but the magpies are willing to destroy anyone that doesn't comply in order to safeguard their sinister secrets, the IG have actual orders from Terra and can't very well back down, while the SoB consider anyone that doesn't back away from their divine calling (and probably PMS induced rage) to be some kind of heretic.

According to DoWII, the Bluhd Rhevhens lost at least, and I'm pretty sure I saw some wargear fluff for the IG implying they ultimately won. Whether or not the three factions actually clashed with each other is impossible to say though.

Once upon a time, a kid could get some poorly drawn titties or wierd Heavy Metal type blood and gore by buying game books. A grognard putting sideboob art in a fantasy game because why the fuck not?

Now, there's just too much attention to the gaming hobbies to get away with that shit. A grognard can't put a tit in a rulebook without some soccer mom blowing her top and thinking that her kid is going to go Elliot Roger because he saw a headtube in a rulebook.

It's hilarious to see GeeDub try to "expand" their market, for a game with a facist, oppressive human empire, sex demons and whatnot, because that's the crazy grognard shit that the original writers were interested in.

They inherited a totally not-expandable IP. They'd have to burn it all to the ground and start fresh, or more likely, like to the consumers about how "kid friendly" this stuff really is.

Yea, no.

As everyone has said time and again, 40k is the one thing that gives GW a profit. And with the recent string of good decisions after Kirby stepped down, you can be sure they'll think twice before repeating the fiasco of AoS with their sole remaining cash cow.

Yes, but Kirby is gone now. And judging by the new starter boxes, new and old boardgames, revival of specialist games and attempts at enticing more kids in, whoever is in charge now seems a lot more competent.

No matter what asinine shit they've done before, they've always more or less followed the numbers in the end.

I had a quick question about Only War. When concerning overwatch, does the attack action occur every time an enemy does something on their turn? Could someone theoretically shoot the enemy for each of their turns and pin them?

Or is overwatch only able to be used on one enemy to pin them?

 No.228277

Have you tried looking at the errata? I don't know myself, but there my be an answer in there.

 No.228294

>>227573

IIRC the fan canon is:

Winter Assault, both wins (IG makes it to the Titan but the Eldar fuck with it).

Dark Crusade: The Bloody Magpies wins

Soulstorm: The Imperial Guard wins.

Real canon Taldeer (winter assault) fucked Sturnn (that's in a actual Only War sourcebook) then got killed by the blood ravens (hunted in Dark Crusade).

The Bloody Magpies won because a lot of shit with Davian Thule/Avitus (in DoW II) is related to the Blood Raven purging the Imperial Guard from Kronus and the relic they found.

The Imperial guard win Soulstorm because it's sure the bloody magpie got rekted (DoW II Cyrus) but they got out (which is only possible with IG winning).

 No.228298

>>228267

The language is very singular and all good reasoning should tell you that you get one attack with this one action you are taking, otherwise you'd be completely breaking the flow of time.

> The active character guards a specific area, poised to shoot at an opportune moment.

An opportune moment. Just the one. There's also the short description of Overwatch in table 8-1.
