 No.227266

A friend shared this video with our group. My guys went ahead and tested my go to d20 because it doesn't have a good track record. Turns out their suspicions were confirmed because it really likes to come up 1.

I need new dice.

>respectably balanced

>legible because i hate dice that are difficult to read

>bonus points for swag factor

I'm also interested in any recommendations for dice bags, towers, dice cups, all that good stuff.

I gotta step up my randomizer game, /tg/

Louis Zocchi insists it's a problem with the injection molding and tumble polishing process and his arguments seem to be pretty fair.

Not sure if this means you should run out and pay the slightly higher price for his Game Science dice, but take his claims with a grain of salt, as he is trying to sell you something.

Science dice are alright, but they're more expensive, somewhat rare and need work before you use em. Use alcohol based acrylics to fill the numbers.

Use translucent dice factory firsts if you can't get your hands on science dice, they're made with a different process, plastic and higher standards. You also can see imperfections much easier.

It's probably hollow, that's what WOTC has been doing since Khans of Tarkir. They make some of them deliberately unweighted because they're just supposed to be used as life counters.

3D printed dice. Because of the way they're made, it's pretty hard to make 'em hollow. Also, most places will let you download the CAD file used to make the dice, so you can check beforehand that it's balanced.

If you wanna get fancy, you can get 'em 3D printed in various metals. Also, you can get dice that are literally hollow but mathemagic'd up to be balanced anyway, although you may wanna check their math.

They're $1.50 on the website

>somewhat rare

website

>need work before you use em

You can get them hand inked in the color of your choice for a 1 feking dollar

>Need work

You still need to shave the injection sprue bump off of the edge of the GameScience dice.

Filling the numbers is easy to DIY. Rub it with the flat end of a crayon and wipe the surface clean. This is how people did RPG dice back before Chessex.

Chessex and others automate both of these for you by dipping the whole die in paint out of the injection machine, then running it through a rock tumbler. The injection nub is removed and the only ink remains in the number recesses (or any flaw recesses).

Gamescience dice cost more for the better material. The plastic is stronger, more resistant to chipping and wear, which is required for rolling with sharp edges for years on end. They're actually lighter than chessex, and the plastic is not as soft.

 No.227467

You plebs and your physical dice.

I was thinking it could be nice to have a loaded dice that rolls more often a little above average.

All players think they are rolling okay without suspecting a thing.

That could be nice.

This guy's a huckster.

>>227266

This video is actually pretty damn accurate. Sad you can't take a salt water bowl to test-float dice.

>>227467

This isn't a perception thing though, if this was Vegas there'd be some looking into loaded dice, and they test their dice to an exacting level of precision. More than us common gamers who get superstitious and get pissed at bad luck streaks when really it's poor die manufacturing.

If people want PERFECT randomness, use a random generator.

>>227499

But what I say is, I would like to have dice loaded so that they roll average-good in general so the players feel lucky and like the sessions more

 No.227503

>>227502

but then you'd have fewer and fewer outliers on the high and low end. Might make sessions boring.

The best thing to do if you want reliability is start using instead 1d20 for instance, use 3d6 or 4d6-4. You'll get your curve better that way.

Do you know something I don't or is that just… like… your opinion, man?

 No.227588

>This guy's a huckster.

The problem with that assertion is that the molding process chessex uses does cause imperfections, and air bubbles and tumble-polishing does cause them to come out with a wonky center of gravity and an ovoid shape.

This is specifically a problem with d20s, though. Their near-spherical shape causes all of these problems to become magnified.

How about a well-shuffled deck of cards, with some numbers removed as needed?

Mind the added benefit that nobody will call you a geek if they are found.

Much easier to cheat, takes up more space, very awkward to use when "rolling" more than one die at a time, and more likely to get fucked over when Carl spills his drink onto the table again.

I kinda wonder, if you were to bake your die on with the side opposite of the number that pops up with this test faced down, could you potentially balance out your die?

 No.227975

>>227974

Unlikely. There's a decent chance it's unbalanced on more than one side, not to mention you have practically no way of knowing the right temperature and time to get the results you wanted.
