Got a question and feel bad opening a thread over just one question so D&D General I guess.

I've only played a limited amount of D&D but understand the basic concepts so this is a bit confusing for me. Looking for some help/advice on a Paladin build for 5th edition.

I'm used to melee characters who are more offensively focused then what basic paladins seem to offer, what kind of multi-classing tips or feat choices should I look at to make a more offensive melee paladin? Not looking to play a knight in shining armor protecting all in need, but a religious fanatic who believes smashing and smiting the shit out of evil is the greatest act of devotion.

You can happily just go regular paladin all the way and still be incredibly dangerous.

If you want to ramp up your bullshit, go for vengeance oath and take the Polearm Master, Great Weapon Master and Sentinel feats. You've now got 3 attacks per round with reach, and get an opportunity attack when someone comes close. If you hit with that, they can't move for the rest of their turn. Smite with all 3 attacks and watch your DM cry when you roll a hundred damage for the round.

Multiclassing can be helpful but I suggest holding off until you've at least hit level 5. Sorcerer gives you better spell progression and if you dip 3 into it you can get some extra spell slots per day. You could also multiclass into Fighter for the Battlemaster archetype and pick up trip attack for knockdowns.

In 5e Paladins are no longer needed to be LG neither need to specificly be tanks, that said, if you play your cards correctly a well done high level Paladin is a non stopeable machine of pain that can't be attacked by anything that doesn't roll a crit (my current Pal is on lvl 2, and with my lucky dice rolls I have an AC of 24, immunity to necrotic and ratiant damage and resistance to bludgeoning and slashing weapons, as well as a +7 attack bonus on one handed weapons)

As for the inquisitorial fucker you want to make I suggest you roleplay it and take Oath of Vengeance on lvl 3.

And yes, He's also an inquisitor. It's a part of my character's background I like to reveal slowly.

I like to say "I'm a knight and I'm searching for someone who hurt me, you need to know no more" before asking to execute everyone giving long as fuck speeches about them being punished for their sins and me being the instrument of His divine retribution.

It's by far the funniest rol I've played.

You could multiclass into Warlock for a lot of free spell slots to use to smite people with.

There are three typical choices for Paladin/Warlock multiclassing:

Multiclass into a Fiend Warlock and be ultra edgy.

Play Oath of Ancients Paladin/Arch Fey Warlock and be kind of Druidy.

Multiclass into an Undying Light Warlock (from Unearthed Arcana.)

paladin 17/warlock 3 is a nice combination

gives you 2 level 2 slots that refresh on short rest

eldritch blast with improvements

hex and a few other good spells

mage armor at will and summoning your own weapon

i have a halfelf paladin using this build, he is dex based and walks arround in robes and unarmed, he is a priest of sehanine, has the oath of ancients and his warlock pact comes from touching an artifact that had an archfey inside it

the archfey tricked him into making the pact disguising it as a ritual to sehanine, when the paladin noticed it was too late to undo the pact

The pally has a very elven theme, he uses armor of shadows invocation to summon a silver armor (flavoured mage armor), his pact weapon is a silver rapier with vines as the sword guard that dig into his flesh, when the paladin loses his temper the vines drain blood from his arm and the archfey takes over (the DM controls the character when this happens, i gave myself this flaw to compensate using a warlock pact on a paladin)

also my eldritch blast changes when the rapier is out, the projectiles become dark blue crescent moon slashes

i flavoured my character so much the party had a hard time actually understanding what my class was, i worked with the DM to be able to use my abilities by describing them without ever mentioning the actual name, since he had a copy of my sheet he knew which ones i was using
