 No.392160

Post Chinese silk tapestries, Discuss Mongolian shadow puppet Theater, Recommend Taiwanese Cave Murals, Argue about Cantonese tile mosaics.

This time, we forgo the usual copy-pasta, as the list has grown cluttered with one-off suggestions and series that most don't seem to care for. We should discuss the matter before settling on a format, if we ever even do decide on one. For now, the only criteria that should matter is whether or not a series is good and whether or not is it relevant to /tg/'s incredibly broad and often arbitrary interests.

To kick things off, I want to share the first few chapters of After School Dice Club with you. It's a highly /tg/ manga about cute girls playing board games. It's a little slower paced and lower energy than Quick Start, but it's still a pleasant read.

Be forewarned, though, it's not until the 3rd chapter that we actually get some board gaming. In a way, this manga follows /tg/'s underlying ideal of being just as much about the people who play games as it is about the games themselves.

And that ends Chapter 3. You can keep reading the rest if you like. There's 12 chapters right now, it's still ongoing, and they just announced an anime adaptation for it recently.

What did you like /tg/? I thought the touch at the end where they explain the game with a little more detail is a really nice touch and shows how much the author actually cares about the topic of board gaming.

Ride-On King on the other hand seems to be liked by the whole thread. That should stay.

I want to try to make green tea caneles now. Any bakers know if mixing rum and green tea power is a mistake, or should I just use the green tea in place of rum?

Thats what I did. Kinda fucked the recipe though since I got rushed and we're out of rum, going to wait for the fuck ups to get eaten before I try batch #2.

First batch though I didn't go through the steps to make the proper with like creaming the eggs and heating the milk, all that, but they turned out ok. Still crispy outsides, the inside isn't exactly a custard but it is still a cream like stuff. With 1 tsp of matcha powder I can't really taste the green tea though, thinking I'll double it and dissolve it either in the milk and butter or water beforehand.

Why the fuck is this series so endearing? Is it the comfy atmosphere? The characters? The little big adventures they go on? The world they live in and how its familiar yet alien? The gorgeous art? It's a little bit of all of the above. It gives a really strong "I wish I could live in this story" vibe that not a lot of series can pull off. I'd like to think an RPG based in the Hakumiko world could work, but I think I'd mostly want it just so I could have a big, heavily book loaded with gorgeous art and interesting info about the world and all it's fascinating little nooks and crannies.

I made a thread about non-combat games, in part because I wanted to discuss how a HakuMiko game might work. Didn't go as planned but it's still around >>387971

It's princess gets captured by final boss, she gets bored of her cell, and tries to find better ways to sleep to kill time. Also, turns out demons are pretty swell guys.

Starts out with Princess going to silly lengths to find different ways to fall asleep comfortably, and slowly builds on the cast of characters, her interactions with the demons, and the somewhat complicated relationship between humans and demons. It's funny, cute, and has some genuinely heartwarming moments in it.

>Why the fuck is this series so endearing? Is it the comfy atmosphere? The characters? The little big adventures they go on? The world they live in and how its familiar yet alien? The gorgeous art?

It's a mix from all of that, really. Series like that are a rare treasure. No matter where the media is from.

I've recently re-read the Hobbit and LoTR, which made me realize how I'd love to see a story like that based on the daily lives of Hobbits.

Finished it up last night. My biggest complaint is that the art is really claustrophobic at times and it's difficult to get an immediate grasp on what's going on in some sequences. Otherwise, this story was on my mind all day long. I'm truly floored by how well everything came together and how none of the characters felt wasted or underutilized. The author avoided all the power level and ultimate technique kind of cliches entirely. Nothing felt like an asspull, although a few things did seem a little contradictory, though that could be chalked up to bad translation.

Truly excellent and worth the time to read.

I agree with you, man, some of the last chapters I couldn't make sense of what was happening, and I thought it was just me being retarded.

All in all, it's a great story and I don't regret reading it, but I'm surprised there was no epilogue chapter after the last on, like many stories tend to do.

I knid of wanted to know what happened to the characters and the world after all that shit went down.

Big spoiler for everyone else, so don't read if you haven't touched Keyman yet

Last warning

Alright, so after Satan was sent back to heaven, I expected one more chapter. I went through the last chapter one more time just to be sure I hadn't missed anything. I didn't expect them to "cure" the beastmen or anything, but I did expect some closure on the matter. If Alex and his wife got back together and could conceive a kid (like as a gift from Necro). If Alex's reputation would be cleared. What would happen to Pete. How guys like Walter could go back to their lives and pretend that there wasn't some way to unfuck the lives of beastmen. I also would have liked to at least know that Alex and Sally adopted and raised Misery as a fine and pure daughteru.

>>393150

There's a nicely balanced bit of lewdness throughout the series, but it doesn't get in the way of the story. Flor is pretty lewd most of the time, though.

I guess there was the original advanced "Old ones" that either made or discovered it first. The tribals are either their degenerated descendants or they discovered it after them. Then came these sailors. Next we see the Ganja, though it's likely that some might have tried it before them. After them there was probably a steady stream of explorers that build the city where the series starts.

He's saying Goblin Slayer pulled an "exact words trick" on the High Elf Archer. She didn't want him to use his usual bag of tricks (gas, explosives, collapsing the ceiling) to holocaust the goblins, as it posed a risk to the town.

So he followed the letter, but not the spirit, of her request. Hence "exact words."

Great chapter, as expected. Having read the LN up to volume 5, it remains.. ok. Volume 5 is a bit weak in my opinion, but not offensively so. Kind of excited to see it made into manga.

The Inchling anime wasn't perfect, but I think they did a good job overall. The art was beautiful. The voice acting was well cast (especially for Jada's unrelenting smugness). The music was pure healing. The sequences that needed good animation got them, even though the rest was a little stuff. It was different and not what we expected, but I don't think it was bad. In fact, the blu-rays sold pretty well, so hopefully we get more seasons. and if a kind God exists, someday we get some kind of Inchling Animal Crossing style game about living comfy tiny little life.

>and Houseki no Kuni were treated

I'm very lukewarm with the Houseki adaptation. I've been reading that series since the scanlation started so I was optimistic for an adaptation, and excited to hear it got an official localization for the manga. But Studio Orange wasn't a good pick in my opinion, being largely used to working on mech anime for fights, they really didn't sell me on the same tone of the manga. Probably because they completely missed out on how contrasts were important to setting the mood and tone, and instead went for very vibrant scenes both visually and auditory ( the former makes sense since with the presence of color these gems would be radiant) but sometimes to the detriment of what might have previously been more somber and contemplative. And the models not being able to deform slightly means they can't hit some of the more stylized postures Haruko's style creates to accentuate feeling.

In the end I didn't really enjoy it and even a friend of mine who was introduced to the story through the anime, got what I meant when he started to read the manga. Made in Abyss and Hakumei to Mikochi has far more faithful adaptations. I can't really forgive the sometimes janky visuals and line delivery of HnK though. I think hand animation would have been more appropriate. TV CGI still isn't a suitable replacement for anything more than complicated mechs/spaceships and even then, it depends on the production.

I guess it depends based on if you read the manga before. I'm a filthy secondary watched the anime first as did most anons. So I really didn't mind the character designs but I guess it isn't as enjoyable if you were expecting it to be as close to the manga as that preview.

This one was good. I feel like the reason people didn't like it was because it wasn't a battle series, but it was rare to see a series that had a feeling of fantasy to it's world and magic. I've heard people don't like Chise either, the reasons tend to vary but I think she's a good MC.

I liked the emphasis on traditional European folk legends and fairy tales over the usual fantasy template. I wish there were more settings that used the fey in the way MahoYome did. A lot of people in the West are pretty ignorant of their own legends, and I have to admit I'm guilty of it too.

I also get a kick out of the fact that the author, entirely genuinely, made the Eternal Jew one of her manga's main villains.

Going to go ahead and dump the last two chapters of the now cancelled manga 'Curse Blood' by the now deceased Hiroshi Kajiyama. Pouring one out for a great artist.

The entire run was 4 chapters long, and for those who haven't read the first two chapters on the manga reader of your choice but here are links to them:

https://mangadex.org/chapter/12325/1

https://mangadex.org/chapter/12326/1

The basic story is that of any 90s isekai. A young person, in this case a girl by the name of Kyouko, finds herself and her bed pulled into a strange and unfamiliar world. Only the cryptic warnings of a horned woman give her any indication of what she must do, and what she must do is survive and keep her heart safe. What follows next is a chance meeting with a young man named Solomon who is covered in magical tattoos, and the reader learning of the forces that summoned Kyouko in order to use her in their plans for conquest and destruction. Now Kyouko wishes to find out what is going on, as well as find a way to get home, unfortunately that will never get to happen.

And with that the story closes. There's a lot I feel like I want to say about Curse Blood but for brevities sake.

With a single volume Horishi has created a fantasy I can safely say "I would love to read this". The combination of excellent art and beautiful rendering of fantasy creatures and locations (He has worked in the gaming industry for decades doing work on fantasy titles) and so much setup for good plotlines this looked like something to make fantasy manga proud.

In a world where Isekai has become a glut of game mechanics, shallow self inserts. and shoddy world building, I found Kyoko and Solomon to be a refreshing return to form of having people rely on the natives of their new home for help and guidance. And not being just another curb stomping OPMC. And the world for as short a time as we spend with it feels alive and intricate.

Kyoko reminds me a bit of Hitomi from Escaflowne, in fact she seems to be the same sort of "priestess" archetype character, someone whose significance would revolve around a power they bring to the world that instigates change. No doubt tied to the blood that flows through her veins and the diminishing magic of the world.

This story was uniquely fantastical with it's presentation and it has had my imagination chugging every time I go back to it. It pains me that this will never be finished, it really is a good opening chapters. Amsya Mr. Kajiyama you will be missed

Few things hurt me to my core like the death of someone in the act of making something beautiful, unique, or compelling. In my mind, creation (of art, narrative, or structure) is one of the more noble things someone can do. To see such effort lost totally (such as is this case) or to watch it decay and falter before its demise (Goodbye, The Truth - Era Sir Pratchett, and Discworld with him) is heartrending in ways I can hardly even explain.

Who knows where this story would go? Who knows if the main character would ever get a proper outfit? Who knows if this world would find another renaissance, another golden age, or if it would descend further?

Would it have gotten an anime? Become the next classic, the next Escaflowne?

And the porn. Oh, god, the porn.

Truly, there is no sadder thing than never knowing these things, never seeing these things, never watching them come to pass.

Everyone that died deserved it. No prep, no guts, left all to chance. I find it odd that the adventurer profession is so popular considering how astronomical the mortality rate must be.

Maybe there is some difficulty curve we're not seeing, where their 'stats' grow logarithmicaly. Like say a Gold adventurer is thrice as great as a Silver.

Then again the gods are playing some kind of chess. Maybe the pawns are being sacrificed at an increased rate, all of this turmoil a recent thing as the two lines begin to make contact.

 No.394980

>>394977

I don't think Goblin Slayer runs on isekai rules where a person can just "level up" and miraculously become superhumanly strong and tough to the point that a high rank adventurer could survive things a low rank couldn't. The Gold Ranks we've seen are very strong, but they're also skilled and capable of handling themselves in difficult situations. The adventuring party we saw at the start of the series was all newbies who underestimated walking right into the Gobbo home turf, for instance. Goblin Slayer ends up looking so strong and effective because he planned and prepared for the exact situation he was walking into. Tight quarters, low light, dickass goblins who fight as dirty as possible.

I'd assume it's because it's an in fashion job. Save the princess and be the hero and all that. That, and I'm quite certain there's no one keeping statistics of the death rates save maybe someone higher up in the guild, and I'm sure they don't feel like publishing those results for the public. Consider also how many people bear grudges against the monsters, as well as the high mortality rate of the standard civilians who are the ones raided.

It's kind of weird to think that Goblin Slayer might be someones first introduction to tabletop. Would have been something like Lodoss War decades ago, but this is the modern "inspired by play session" anime/manga/novel franchise. Hell, Group SNE did Lodoss and now are putting this out.

There's a genuine effort to expand Goblin Slayer into this massive entity and it's working. This is the face of modern fantasy right now in Japan.

>>395080

And it's a good ending to a great series. Not many people can stick the landing but Warai did it. An excellent series.

He has also already started his next series, Zingzine. Set in what looks like Feudal Japan it's about ninjas of the magical powers kind. Looks like it's got shades of Basilisk going on. And the main heroine is right out of Planet Terror but instead of a gun leg, she's got a sword foot.

Besides those, the usual rule rule that the "original" is better than the adaptations. Manga adaptations of anime originals are often pretty bland.

>The anime series of Slayers are also better than the manga, though I didn't read the original novels in that case.

Comparing The Slayers anime to the light novels is like comparing apples to oranges. The Slayers anime is at its best when it’s doing comedic filler episodes where it plays the characters off one another, while the ‘story’ episodes that are very rough, loose adaptations of the light novel plots are generally lower in quality. The light novels, on the other hand, are about Lina and Gourry being competent adventurers who get thrown into dangerous situations first, with wacky comedy about them being a hot-tempered sorceress and dumb-as-a-brick fighter second.

Though, the trend in the anime is reversed when it comes to the more modern series, Revolution and Evolution-R. The shit-tier writers for those can’t do comedy without turning everyone into caricatures of themselves, so the anime-original plot episodes wind up coming off a lot better in comparison.

In defense of no helmets, it'd stand to reason that "strong like a child" wouldn't mean "they all wear Jordans, and can leap twice their size to hit the noggin".

>Muh hyper realistic goblin slaying anime

GS should be using javelins and short spears considering how often he throws his weapons, and both of those allow him to keep his full stance, utilize his height and reach, throw more accurately, scales better against different foes, degrades slower, is easier to keep clean while you fight, and is cheaper to purchase.

His short sword make him always charging in low, putting his head on the same level as the goblins. He needs a helmet more so than any other guild member for this reason alone. Even the monk class can just kick them while leaving the rest of their body out of enemy range, or punch downwards into the done of the goblin, which is a rather difficult area to defend from that angle.

trope that's actually been lampshaded a few times in the manga is probably enough reason not to.  No.397094

>>397093

Fair point on the ambush part, but a short spear and javelin combo seems more intuitive to his autism. Javelins would be used melee until either dulled to the point where his body weight no longer punches through armor, or a ranged combatant needs dispatched. Spears and javelins also require less energy to operate, so fatigue would be lowered, but that rarely comes up in the manga or LN. He can still do his normal procedure of replenishing weapons on the fly as well.

>In defense of no helmets

There's no need to defend the lack of helmets. As far as I know, the LNs never say the Goblin Slayer is the only one who wears a helmet. He's just the only one who never takes it off.

A helmet is the most important defensive gear in just about any situation. It wouldn't make sense for the other adventurers not to wear them (at least the classes that benefit from them), especially since they usually fight bigger foes. Why do we never see them wearing helmets? There's multiple reasons for that, though they are somewhat meta.

First of all, when we see them at the guild they are usually about to go on a quest or they just finished one. So of course they wear their full gear, safe for the helmet since the thing makes it harder to talk and is just uncomfortable.

>Why don't we see them wear helmets in combat though?

I'll just call that artistic freedom. Not only is it easier to identify them like that, it is also pretty common for heroes and important characters in all types of fiction to not wear helmets. Even if they should have them, both logically and rules-wise. There's tons of examples like that.

Characters in Japanese or Western vidya that aren't displayed with a helmet even if they have it equipped. NPCs in adventures that are described as "wearing full plate" yet their illustration shows them helmetless. Stuff like that. Pic related is a perfect example. Almost no actual character in 40K wears one even in situations where it'd be impossible not to.

Also, chapter 4 of the GS manga was some dumb bullshit and it wasn't like that in the novel.

This is also something that makes GS stand out. He looks cool but in any other setting he'd just be the fantasys equivalent of a stormtrooper with armor like that. He doesn't care. He just wears his mook armor and does the shitty low-level job nobody else wants to do.

With that being said, of course you need a good amount of "suspension of disbelief". It's typical RPG fantasy world, with loincloth wearing barbarians, sorceresses that go on adventures in what looks like an evening dress and knights that wear their plate armor for dinner parties.

Kinda reminds me of how some people try to convince themselves that Dark Souls is a hyper-realistic medieval combat sim. Of course it isn't, nor is it trying to be one. Stop being delusional.

>Not only is it easier to identify them like that, it is also pretty common for heroes and important characters in all types of fiction to not wear helmets

It really is a shame, especially for characters out of uniform like an adventuring party, there aren't more characters with distinctive, cool helmets.

Agreed, though, that GS is a special case, since he's supposed to contrast in his autistic brute pragmatism against the stereotypical heroic face protag. Also, the rest of the characters are probably all homages to character designs from other artists, and the closest thing to another frontline fighter in the party is naturally covered in scales.

Not sure what makes you conclude helmets are the best piece of armor, considering that any head impact is just about guaranteed to kill you. Either immediately, or shortly after since the first hit dazed you. The reason why so many helmets were made back in the day was because in a war, you want your troops to be fighting as long as possible. It wasn't because it increased survivability, but because it gave them a chance to kill the person who just fatally wounded them.

If you look at historical wars, the number of head hits and body hits were actually extremely low. Most combatants die by getting hit in the arms and legs, then either bleeding out (because why kill a guy who's dead anyways and needlessly risking getting injured), or killed because they were disarmed from the injury.

I'd take a shield any day of the week over a helmet, but that's just me.

 No.397118

>>397114

>Not sure what makes you conclude helmets are the best piece of armor, considering that any head impact is just about guaranteed to kill you.

How about the fact that they prevent you from suffering a head impact in the first place? Also, not every small injury will kill you but even shallow cuts and bruises on your head and face can be irritating.

Besides that, they are useful as general protective gear. Even if it's just bashing your skull on a low dungeon ceiling or when you fall on your armored ass for some reason.

Your brain still gets all that kinetic energy. A sword smashing into your helmet is at best, a concussion, and worst a caved in helmet.

I can think of one really good reason helmets are #1, the same reason they've been pretty much the only type of armor used in the modern era: Shrapnel.

Unlike the IRL pre-modern era, high fantasy such as GS has magic that behaves very similarly to modern grenades/artillery/etc.

I'd rather have a bit of metal and cushioning than taking a blow straight to the skull. Not to mention that helmets are often designed to lead the force off your head. With that being said, I tend to prefer my characters helmetless because that's often cooler.

Great point of splash damage, fireballs, and other things not typical to historical battles. The closest things that come to nine are grapeshot and Greek fire, with the latter being a moot point, because you're fucked regardless. I'd definitely want a helmet when that bead of fireball energy cones my way, even if magic damage doesn't really work that way. Typically, the biggest reason for full faced helmets was to deflect arrows, not necessarily to deflect melee.

>>397126

A side attack to the helmet won't deflect for beans, and if it did, it would do so into your neck from the most common attack angles. This gore back to what I was dating earlier, as am overhead attack would deflect worth most common helmets, but in doing so, would go into your collar. You're now dying, but you have a chance to take your opponent with you.

My thoughts on helmets is in an battlefield they're great. Your enemy is on one side, you're on the other. No sneaky monsters, no attacks from blind spots, no miles of terrain to travel, no traps to notice, no secret doors to find by detecting subtle changes in the air (ears and nose tip are the most sensitive to feeling wind).

Might just be personal preference in my case. I never cared anything heavier than chainmail whenever I sparred.

Modern artilery has shrapnel because its metal projectiles and explosives, not fireballs. In any case, are you going to fight naked against an army of melee fighters because a minority of them have guns? And no, real armour is not so heavy as to slow a fit warrior down, if it was it could probably protect from bullets.

If magic is so powerful why aren’t their more mages? Because only a select few can use magic? Why isn’t their a mage breeding program then? Because it’s completely arbitrary? Mages would have to be extremely rare for them not to dominate the battlefield, if their magic is comparable to modern artilery.
