Let's talk about danmaku.

Share your achievements, discuss strategies, and ask for advice here.

Touhou is hard. How do I git gud?

 No.6

>>5

Practice, watch replays, and ask for advice.

You're already doing one of those. Although it might help if you were more specific.

 No.7

>>6

It's just seems too stressful. Every time I die I get really frustrated.

 No.8

>>7

That's common. It goes away for most people. Eventually you get to the point where you stop caring about winning or losing and just keep playing. If you're doing something hard, there's no reason to expect that you'll get it soon. Another thing you can try is picking your favorite game and sticking to it. If you play a game you enjoy and are good at, you won't get so frustrated. It's easy to get frustrated when you are new to something and don't care much about it.

 No.9

>>7

There is a certain amount of beginner's frustration that can be dealt with tenacity and discipline, you'll have to accustom yourself to the feel of the challenge. Learning as much as you can from your mistakes makes the process faster.

Other than that most of the frustration I've experienced comes from not being able to see how a situation is survivable. With self-reflection and being observant the answer has always eventually become clear.

 No.10

I'm surprised that we got two unique people to post. Not counting the OP. It seems that there are lurkers at least. I advertised this board almost nowhere. I don't know if I should or even where. The reason I wanted to make a board is due to the abyssal quality of discussion.

IRC and streams are the worst part of any community

Forums are filled with normies, egotistical mods, and asinine rulesets

4chan is off limits even though there's gameplay threads on its /jp/ and /v/

Reddit and other such sites are even worse than 4chan

All in all, there's no good place to talk about Touhou. I want to change that and make a new community. Hopefully attracting the better players of other communities. If any of you know a place to get posters, you should try inviting them over. There's nothing to lose. If this board gets nowhere, and that will probably be the case, then we'll have to settle for random threads on /v/ and /2hu/ and share them with secondaries who think it's an anime.

 No.11

>>10

Even though the Touhou community is quite large, there doesn't seem to be much interest in any of the main games. And the people that do harbor an interest usually end up doing a normal 1cc and then they call it a day. Which is a damn shame because the games can be so much more than that, not just Touhou but danmaku-games in general.

Oh, and I do want to say that Touhou streams aren't quite as bad as you make them out to be, though I agree that IRC is the worst place. Looking at the Touhou subreddit makes me sick, the only thing people do all day every day is post cute images that you can easily find yourself on any booru variant.

 No.12

>>11

I think people would be more interested if they had a place to communicate. That's what I hope to accomplish with this board. I want to inspire people to play by having a nice place to discuss. And I agree the streams aren't so bad compared to other communities. I guess I'm burned out from some of the stuff I've seen.

Fluke dodge on Sagume's midboss nonspell.

 No.14

>>13

Your dodging was fine, anon. It's ZUN that's a dick for walling you when you don't go the direction he wants you to.

 No.15

>>14

That's not true. I got walled because I didn't dodge well enough. After watching the replay I could conclude that I could have easily avoided that scenario if I had a better understanding of the pattern.

 No.16

It's a shame that the replay archive doesn't support the last 3 games. There should be a new one.

>barely 1cc MoF

>trying to decide whether or not to keep improving or move on to SA or UFO

Falling behind sucks, but that aside I can't seem to bomb when the situation calls for it because I'm too worried about muh score and power. Are there any situations where using a bomb is preferable?

 No.18

>>17

Bombs convert bullets into faith and collect every item on the screen for you. The clear bonus from having spare lives is huge in MoF. You can't get a good score if you miss a lot, so learning how to survive is fundamental.

 No.19

>>18

The main reason I worry about score is because it means more lives and more chances to screw ups, and that mentality is hard to break for whatever reason. So basically it's better to start bombing stage 4 and above because those have some pretty dense bullets getting thrown your way.

Since we're on the subject what about the later games? Aside from SA since those bombs all behave differently and grazing is the main thing.

 No.20

>>19

I should have realized that you meant score for getting extends. In that case, you should try to PoC and finish spellcards with full power. If you finish spellcards at full power, you get point items instead of power items. Getting every extend by the end of the game shouldn't be difficult. Misses make your faith go down, which is bad for score, so you should still try to avoid them. In other words, you just need to practice. After a while, getting extends shouldn't be a problem.

UFO is plentiful in resources. Bombing can both help and handicap you. Some bombs slow you down which makes chasing tokens harder. Other bombs allow you to move freely but don't do much damage. You also run the risk of destroying a UFO before it is filled if you don't time your bombs correctly.

TD is stingy on resources. It helps to remember where resources come from and collect them using manual trance. A good way of getting trance is to bomb over a boss. You can also use bombs to kill enemies and collect the trance they drop.

DDC is about collection. Bombing in this game is like triggering the PoC mechanic, so you can get extra 2.0 bonuses if you bomb when there are a lot of items on the screen.

LoLK gives you an item if you get more than a 1 million bonus in a chapter. The bonus is decided by how much you graze and how many enemies you kill. Bombing is useful for both killing enemies and grazing. Sometimes the only way to collect a bonus from a chapter is to bomb.

I usually stay at full power but maintaining high faith is an issue, and that's before the occasional screw up with Aya and the inevitable fuck up with Sanae and on. Tried mimicking a replay I downloaded and bombed a little more and managed the beat my old score, but it's hardly impressive to those who know what they're doing.

Still, Reimu B has now been 1cc'd with help from a deathbomb or two but I think that might be because MoF feels easier than the other games. Still, I shouldn't be proud of scraping by but I have to start somewhere.

Can't say I'm a fan of that trance mechanic but I only played TD a few times before backtracking. I think I'll focus on bombing in UFO because those really easy to get and I'm breaking that hoarding habit.

 No.22

>>21

Don't forget that bombing in MoF makes you lose faith while deathbombing doesn't.

I haven't played MoF in forever. I should really visit it again.

By the way, how come you put two spaces between sentences? I've never seen someone do that on a chan before. Only in academic papers.

>bombing in MoF makes you lose faith while deathbombing doesn't

Shit, that's what I get for not paying attention. Dunno how I managed a higher score with all that bombing though since I once again ended with no lives left.

It's a habit from said papers and other crap I wrote.

 No.26

>>25

This looks interesting. Is it not supposed to work?

 No.27

>>26

I don't know. I just assumed it wasn't working properly because there's such a small amount of replays available. If it does work, then it's all good!

 No.28

>give UFO a break to play DDC

>never used Sakuya A because the focus shot was too weird for me somehow

>end up getting 1cc with mistakes I can maybe unfuck up next time

Should I even be proud of making it with zero lives left? Shame on me for not using spell card practice on Sukuna and Seija but I didn't even think I'd get there that far tonight anyway.

Stinginess with bombs is finally fading away as far as DDC is concerned and I think it's because I'm really digging the little PoC mechanic that's going on.

 No.29

>>28

ReimuA and SakuyaA are strong in DDC. It's no wonder that you got so far.

>>28

There's no shame in making it with 0 lives in stock. It just means you barely passed the threshold and can now focus on improving your 1ccs, or you can switch to a higher difficulty.

 No.31

>>29

I had no idea, someone wanted me to use Sakuya and it just happened. I think Marisa B is strong as hell too because one of Banki's cards is almost over because it starts.

>>30

As much as I want to actually go beyond normal I think I'll settle for improving DDC, MoF, and maybe UFO but I haven't bother with the last one in so long.

Stage 4 is hit or missing depending on who the boss and Seija is a pain because panic unreverses and I slam into a bullet. I think I'm learning some tricks for stage 6 but again Seija's first nonspell card trips me up. Sukuna isn't too much of a problem outside of Shining Needle Sword and You Grow Bigger, and I think the latter is going to be that card for me on this boss.

That feeling when you accomplish a big goal and don't know what to do next.

 No.63

This board is slow. Let's get a survey going.

How long have you been playing?

How did you discover the games?

Which ones are you favorite?

What are your current goals?

What motivates you?

 No.64

>>63

>How long have you been playing?

On and off since MoF, but I've been getting consistent with it lately and have actually gotten a few 1ccs.

>How did you discover the games?

It was a youtube video most likely, I can't really remember.

>Which ones are you favorite?

MoF and DDC so far, but that's because I've played those the most.

>What are your current goals?

Getting a 1cc on normal on most games, current one being EoSD but I start to snowball around Meiling, then Patchy depending on what she uses, then Sakuya finishes me off. Not seeing your hitbox isn't that bad but fuck knives.

>What motivates you?

Seeing the good endings for a change and fighting the final boss to awesome music.

 No.65

>>63

>How long have you been playing?

The first time I played a Touhou game was back in 2010, I got a normal 1cc and beat Flandre during this period. I revisited the series 2 years ago and have been playing seriously since.

>How did you discover the games?

I got shown Mcrolld back in like 2007/2008. Later on in 2009/2010 when I rewatched it, I found that it was based on an original song and then I tumbled further down the rabbit hole. I made beating Flandre my first goal because of this.

>Which ones are your favorite?

PCB and EoSD probably.

>What are your current goals?

I want to get high-scores in non-Touhou games. When Mushi comes out on Steam I'll go full shmup on it and then I'll definitely get an Ultra 1cc.

>What motivates you?

I want to crush my enemies, see them driven before me and to hear the lamentations of their women.

5 years.

>How did you discover the games?

Flashes on 4/f/.

>Which ones are you favorite?

I like them all. But UFO is my most favorite.

>What are your current goals?

To be the best player I can possibly be.

>What motivates you?

The lifestyle.

What are your general strategies when encountering new patterns/enemies/levels/games/ect. in danmaku and touhou? Do you do a few blind play throughs and get a feeling for what the optimal playstyles are? Does it come naturally to you? Or do you refer to outside guides/videos a lot to learn the proper/optimal strategies when you're stuck on a particularly difficult level/pattern.? A combination of both?

Due to pride and wanting to accomplish everything by myself as much as possible, I generally avoid guides and outside help, but I lack the intuitive sense/talent about what the right positions/dodges are. Because of that I'm struggling a bit and want to know how much others rely on guides.

I've just starting playing the touhou series and am first playing EoSD. I've gotten to the point where I usually continue for the first time on Patchouli but Remilia's fight makes me take two more continues to beat her. I've to started to become frustrated with a lot of careless mistakes and deaths during stages 2-4 and am plateauing a bit now.

Knowing how to learn is just another thing that comes with experience. Your ideal way of learning is dependent on you as a person. In my opinion, you are handicapping yourself by not learning from others.

You don't have to copy other players exactly. Trying to do so would likely be detrimental. These games can be very complex and it would be very difficult for you to come up with some strategies yourself. The point is to expand what you are capable of.

It also depends on how experienced you are as a player. Some players can do first-day Lunatic clears in new games. They typically get a feeling for the game quickly and don't need to ask for advice. However, it is common for them to work together to make strategies if they want to improve. New players wouldn't have the same instincts as experienced players do. They would continue to make silly mistakes and it would take them longer to catch up. And of course there is also the capacity for handling intense bullet patterns. And only time can help with that.

Personally, I tend to watch several replays of a category that I'm about to play. The more the better because there is always more to learn. I'm happy to read guides and strategies. It's common for me to connect with experienced players if I can. Of course, I make a lot of my own strategies too. And since I have been playing for a while, a lot of it does come naturally to me. Once you have been playing long enough, these things will become more natural for you and you won't need to rely on others for help.

I don't think Touhou is a sufficient game if you don't like spoilers and want to gauge yourself without the help of others. It's not a puzzle game. It's one that values reaction and a deep understanding of routes and strategies. I don't think you will get the most out of the game if you do that. But that's just my opinion.

If you do enjoy finding things out by yourself however, you should be happy because you will never run out of opportunities to do so. You can put thousands of hours into each Touhou game and still find new things to learn about it. These are deep games.

Of course you can play any way you wish. The most important thing is to have fun.

There should be more games that take advantage of screen space like this. I've played a few of them and I think it can work. In the main integer games, the frame uses about 44% of the window.

>How long have you been playing?

I believe that I started playing seriously some time after the release of IN. I distinctly remember PoFV being the first game that I got immediately after release.

>How did you discover the games?

Friends showed me PCB trial that they found on some random download site. All the dialogue was mojibake and I was mostly preoccupied trying to figure out what was even happening on the screen at any given time. The suspiciously sudden ending after the third stage always bothered me until years later on 4chan I discovered the full game. It came with someone's score file and of course the very first thing I did was to try the "extra" that I could never figure out how to unlock. Having never experienced anything like it before, bricks were promptly shat and I've been playing ever since.

>Which ones are you favorite?

PCB for nostalgia, IN for lots of content, SA for characters.

>What are your current goals?

No-miss SA extra. I've already cleared it numerous times but this feels like a whole another beast.

>What motivates you?

Besides autism, overpowered little girls with hats shooting colorful bullets at each other is simply the best. Also clearing a new extra feels damn good.

>>77

Looking at videos and replays may ruin the fun for me, so I tend to do it only after somehow surviving the patterns and attempting to come up with a solution. Ideally, I want to figure out how to clear each spellcard myself.

Of course I still end up spoiling solutions, but watching others play can also give you a sense of your own limits and help you better yourself accordingly, to an extent.

Well, alright. You have my respect for making that choice.

Thanks. I'll try to keep the cancer away and make this board a nice place to talk about bullets.

 No.106

I have decided to share my replay archive: https://wishful.cc/archive/

Please pardon the SSL warning. I'm using a self-signed cert.

It's nowhere near done but I'll be adding to it regularly.

I've hinted at this in the past and it's only finally starting to get done. I originally started this in the summer of 2014 but I dropped it soon afterwards because I was busy with other things. At first I wanted to get this done for the release of LoLK but it turned out to be more work than expected.

 No.151

I want to see TD's stage 2 blue knives and UFO's stage 5 red glowing bullet sections get pacified. Both are possible but very difficult. I've put hours into each and couldn't do it.

What are some things you would like to see pacified?

Since I'm under time and skill constraints, I don't want to aim higher than Normal for now, so it's probably rather boring to discuss or watch.
