Why do people dislike the idea of nationalism?

You don't have to be an authoritarian to be a nationalist. You can believe in strong civil liberties but still believe that your own country's interests should come before the interests of another country.

The ironic thing is that under this definition most people would be considered nationalists, yet they still associate it with le ebil nazis.

The liberals of today want Open Borders and also Diversity. Open Borders so that they can travel the world and experience all the different cultures, and Diversity of cultures in a country so they don't have to travel. This is Internationalism, or Globalism.

Nationalism is the opposite of this. A Nation requires Closed Borders and with that there is No Diversity. Surely then Nationalism is a force to be fought against, so that the liberals can achieve their goals.

As far as I'm concerned this is the belief system. "Nationalism" is the enemy so naturally it is considered a dirty word.

The reality is you cannot have Diversity and also Open Borders. Let's imagine a first world country, Culture A dominates that country. The liberals gain power, borders are removed. People from all around the world move to the country, suddenly Culture A finds itself living with Culture B, C, D & E. At this point the country is Diverse, look at all these different restaurants! But Culture D's people breed faster, and becomes the dominant culture. Culture E has little room, and many of it's people interbreed with Culture D. Gradually Culture E has so little followers it is barely recognized. Generation after generation, the same fate strikes the other Cultures. Only Culture D remains. The country was build by Culture A, now it is dominated by Culture D.

Huh, the liberals are back to square one. Let's see what happened to the other countries, surely they remained a 20% share of each culture. In the country of Culture B, Culture D's people bred faster and dominated it, Culture B is gone. In the country of Culture C, Culture D's people bred faster and dominated it, Culture C is Gone. And E.

Suddenly the Liberals come to a shocking realization. The fly to country A, it's dominated by Culture D. They fly to country B, it's dominated by culture D. Every country on the planet is dominated by Culture D, there are no other Cultures.

Diversity was killed by Open Borders. Nationalists believe that by retaining Closed Borders, they can also retain Diversity.
