Not really the place to discuss this, so (unrelated) picture is just there to ensure I don't get banned. Also spoiler alert, even though I'm pretty sure it's pointless by this point.

It's just subversion of expectations, albeit done really well. It looks like your typical choose your waifu adventure, with ultimately bland girls and predictable plot lines, and then it pulls the rug from under your feet by giving the characters a lot of human, and by human I mean screwed up, characteristics and literally cock-blocking you everytime it seems you're getting closer to the usual romantic stuff.

What made it stand out in the end however, was probably the writing. It's really freaking good: quite the opposite of what these kinds of games tend to have. Lots of foreshadowing and hidden meanings, especially behind the poems, which, if you're looking for them, and you should, add to the creep factor of the whole thing. It takes its time to set up characters you can relate to in usual visual novel fashion, but really all the buildup is just there to make the punch harder once they all start killing themselves. And it works! Also the poems are fucking beautiful and it manages to stay entertaining for a long time while nothing is really happening, although this last part is just my opinion.

One more important thing: Team Salvato, the creators behind it genuinely seem to have have made the game with a lot of passion, and people just fucking love that stuff. Everything from making it free-to-play, having tons of easter eggs and secrets, and just… having like an hour of extra dialogue in the 'Just Monika' part of the game gives those guys a lot of credit. They really do seem to go the extra mile, and people rewarded them for that.

Plus, it has the catchiest freaking song ever. And it even manages to turn that into something more by its extremely bittersweet ending :)

>Whole thing just seems like youtube reaction-video-bait.

I was actualy surprised to see how well it did in Youtube, considering it's got like three jumpscares and the first three hours are nothing but reading.

Well you see, VNs in general used plenty of "meta" stuff like fucking with 4th wall and talking directly to the player for example. It's not anything new. VN in general however are a bit niche in western world due to translations/working with locale and so on.

DDLC is basically meta vn made for western audiences by western dev put directly on the plate via steam for free. It was made to get popular because "dude mindfuck lmao!"

DDLC is babby's 1st meta VN, it's entrylevel garbage once you realize whole premise of the game was that mindfuck twist and there's nothing to it, game is borefest untill shit starts going down and this is the single worst thing VN relying heavily on meta elements could do.

This game is VN for casuals and i'd never thought something like VN for casuals exists untill i've learned about and played this one.

Plus it got a bit popular on twitch due to how the game isn't meant to be played but more "to be reacted to" in a way.

It got popular just like mainstream radio music gets popular: easy to acces garbage nobody finds great or amazing but somehow everyone listens to it.

>>32374

Hopefully you'll get to play more visual novels and learn how much better stuff are out there.

You're gonna get shit on but you ain't wrong. VN's have been doing that meta shit for years now. Games like Kimi to Kanojo to Kanojo no Koi have been parodying the dating sim genre, and popular VN franchises like Danganronpa and Zero Escape employ heavy meta elements into their narrative. Which is to say little of freeware horror games that basically live and breathe that sort of stuff.

Honestly, my issue with Doki Doki, is that it has some legit strong writing in the first half, relating to issues of suicide, depression, and general social isolation, But the second half is more the boilerplate "Ooooohhhh the game knows you're playing ittt, pretty sp00ky huh?" that got popular around the time Undertale was a thing.

I'm not the guy you responded to, but at the risk of going off-topic (posting ticking just in case) I have to ask: don't you think you're getting way too offended where no offense was meant? To me that post felt spot-on, but from your reaction you must've read something like "this game sucks and anyone who likes it is stupid" when that's not what was posted at all.

Most VNs just do not get translated into English. Even the ones that do get translated aren't necessarily the "best" ones. Maybe it was a game a group of fan translators just happened to be passionate about, perhaps it was the only game a publisher could get a license for, you get the idea. Bottom line, without knowing Japanese you'll only be exposed to a small pool of VNs. Let's say you find a VN you love and think is the best in the world, but if it's the only VN you've ever played how do you know there isn't another VN out there that you'd actually like even more if only you could read it?

I know it's silly to use a cartoon to underscore my point, but I highly suggest you watch the episode titled The Best VHS in the World from the series Regular Show because it illustrates exactly what I'm talking about. There's also the allegory of Plato's Cave, but that might come over as condescending which is not my intent.

>dood insulted my waifu

(Pic related)

In all seriousness, their usage of the words "entrylevel garbage", "easy to acces garbage" and of course, "casul" made me feel I was better off not responding to them in too serious a tone, if you catch my drift. I didn't mean to come off as offended or upset, I see where he's coming from and I understand it (to a certain degree). I'm certainly no 'VN connaisseur' and I'm completely sure there's better stuff out there, and if you've played it you're probably going to feel like >>32365 here.

All that being said, I enjoyed the game to pieces. I didn't find it was a "borefest" or that the second half of it was just "dude mindfuck lmao", and even thought that's clearly solely my uneducated opinion as a man tied inside the cave *wink wink*, all I can do is share it.

So yeah, open invitation for that anon to come and seriously make some good recommendations on VNs. I was just half-joking about that part, I actually am interested in playing some higher quality stuff.

Also I include some cute Natsuki feet to counteract the abomination that is Buffsuki, and some tickling 'cause we're definitely off the rails now!

>>32409

I was kinda underwhelmed by that one too. I like long feet but I don't like the perspective they chose to draw it from. I'm really hoping it picks up with the last one, especially since it's the Yuri one *-*

Dont be so hung up on my usage of words, because it's all the same across all boards and 8ch isn't really a place to test one's vast vocabulary. Chans have history of inside jokes and certain slang - no need to point out something that's there since dawn of imageboards.

And to grant your humble request and grace thee with superior intellectual refined patrician taste *wink fuckin wink*:

>G senjou no maou

Didn't actually like it myself (Tsubaki was an angel though, loved that character a lot) but people seem to love it and since our tastes are a bit different it seems you could try it out. Dont bother if you don't like long stuff though.

>Sweetest monster

It's very short recent english vn, go in absolutely blind without spoiling anything, the ost is cool as fuck. Really recommending this one if you have a few hours to spare

Fateshit is good if you like action stuff (fate/stay series and tsukihime). You probably heard about these now and then, there was animu recently made about it iirc.

Planetarian for feels.

Rewrite is another action title, long but worth it.

Song of saya is good horror-ish vn, nitroplus knows how to set up the mood well.

If you like romance play either kira kira or symphonic rain.

Try out stein's gate if you didn't see the anime adaptation yet, i haven't play it myself but i've heard its better than animu and animu wasn't all that bad on its own.

>>32421

It really did. I can say that with certainty now that I've finished the game.

>>32415

I gotta say, I really quite enjoyed 'Sweetest Monster'. The ambience was really well done, both with the music and the recurring themes of rain and wind, and the characters felt very much like real people. (Or maybe I should say, they felt very Three-dimensional If somebody would like to find me and just pop one in the back of my head, I would very much appreciate it.)

In case you don't care to read my incessant ramblings, I liked the game and I will try some of those others you suggested. Probably 'G senjou no maou', since I have a lot more free time as of now. So yeah., thanks. A more spoilery and detailed report ahead though:

Now, first off, I saw that twist coming from waaaaaaay back. I think I thought of it for the first time when Robin sees Bell, and he compares her height to that of his daughter. I seriously even came up with a theory of the spirit actually being real (at first I thought some sort of 'she's got multiple personalities' shit was going on, although I couldn't explain the cat ears), but possesing his daughter without her knowledge while she slept. Granted I wasn't completely right, but I got the biggest part of that right. I won't take much credit for it, however, first of all the creator did a good job at leaving small clues to hint at the twist, but mainly I just figured it out early because my mind tends to go straight to the gutter with this kind of thing. And "It's his own daughter" was right down there.

Don't get me wrong though, not being too surprised at the moment of the twist didn't make me enjoy the experience any less (hell, I liked Doki Doki, and that thing wasn't trying even slightly to hide the dark twist). I liked the depiction of a normal family that should be happy but somehow isn't. Dad isn't there for them not because he's an asshole, but because years of an unfulfilling life (and the tragic experience with her daughter we learn from near the ending) have lead him to be almost drowning in existential dread. Sally isn't a nagging bitch just for the heck of it, she resents her husband for his attitude and has grown to externalize that through unnecessary aggressiveness and distrust. Melody has a name that's too big for her own good, not enough friends and too much angst, and ends up with a bad case of teenage 'wanting to die' syndrome. It feels real. Organic. I like that.

Bell, of course, is the odd card. The element that doesn't fit in. She was really well done too. I even ended up doubting my first assestment of 'she's obviously the antagonist' here and there. The way she 'loves' is appropriately inhuman. She was very obviously meant to be both endearing but creepy and dangerous at the same time (one could almost say she was a really sweet monster amirite? Please, for the love of god, just end me.), and it worked quite well.

Now, that doesn't mean I didn't have problems with the VN. Particularly, the twist seems pretty far-fetched. I cannot for the life of me believe this dude saw her daughter in broad daylight, and was completely unable to recognize her basically because she was doing a lazy cosplay. I get it, I get it, he'd been completely disconnected from her for over a year, I still ain't buying it. It gets a pass though, since Bell did have magical hypnotic cat eyes and whatnot. I had some issues with the writing as well… Mainly a few lines here and there that felt out of place, or that seemed to be poorly timed. I specifically remember a line that was somewhere along the lines of "You let one cat girl into your life, and your life starts falling appart." It's a funny remark, but it came right after a pretty dark/weird/sexy moment and it just rubbed me the wrong way, took me out of the experience. Nothing big though, it was pretty solid.

Bottom line, I really liked it. Twas well worth the few hours I spent on it.
