I just smoked a pipe with tobacco for the first time today. I had a lot of trouble lighting it and I only got a two or three mouthfuls of smoke. My eyes feels really dry and I feel tired/unalert. Is this normal for the first time or is this normal with pipe smoking?

Thank you in advance.

Nicotine sickness?

It's the next day and I don't feel nearly as tired and I'm more alert. Maybe I'm just sick and I smoked on a bad day? A cold has been going around my area.

Also, I searched up some of the symptoms and I don't really feel any dizziness or headaches, etc. Has anyone else experienced something like this? Could 2-3 puffs give nicotine sickness? I'm not sure if I inhaled or not, so does anyone have tips of keeping it going while ensuring not to inhale?

Also the back of my throat tingles a bit. Kind of feels like a very minor sore throat.

Do you have a stamper? You really need a stamper. My boyfriend recommends this video to get started:

It shouldn't effect your eyes nor make you feel tired.

This is really a video worth watching and I hate watching videos as opposed to reading. If you don't have a stamper definitely get one. Tamping your bowl down periodically will keep it lit infinitely better. Just grab a 3 in 1 tool for a few bucks.

You can also find a stick on the ground and use that. Just keep tamping your bowl down and you won't be relighting near as frequently, if at all.

It's normal for the first time.

Watch a youtube vid or somthing on learning to pack tobacco correctly. In cigs or cigars the tobac is manufactured at a proper density to allow airflow and coal formation. It take practice when you have to do it by hand.

Also, you will find it helpful to do a "false light". Take a match or lighter and hold the flame above the bowl while you do a very slow steady pull, just enough suction for te flame to kiss the surface. Move the flame over the whole surface of the tobac to char it. Then tamp the char down to form a surface and try to light that with a strong steady draw with the flame held in the center of the bowl.

Once you get used to it, you can manage your leisurely smoking without it going out.

(Although honestly I don't feet when mine goes out. I usually watch some anime with my pipe and a glass of bourbon and if I'm relaxing I may not pull on the pipe for a minute and it might go out.

tampers are great but I usually just use my thumb

People ask me if I ever burn myself doing that and I always respond with this quote

Just picked up a pipe a few weeks ago.

Currently trying out a blend called Pride O' Wisconsin from a local tobacconist.

A very pleasant flavor but I still need to work on picking up the flavor of the smoke.
