In response to the Snowden revelation that the CIA compromised Apple developers' build process, thus enabling the government to insert backdoors at compile time without developers realizing, Debian, the world's largest free software project, has embarked on a campaign to to prevent just such attacks. In a talk at Chaos Communication Camp in Zehdenick, Germany, earlier this month (full text here), Debian developer Jérémy Bobbio, better known as Lunar, told the audience how the Linux-based operating system is working to bring reproducible builds to all of its more than 22,000 software packages.

Reproducible builds, as the name suggests, make it possible for others to reproduce the build process. "The idea is to get reasonable confidence that a given binary was indeed produced by the source," Lunar said. "We want anyone to be able to produce identical binaries from a given source."

"We are not discussing a hypothetical attack here."

A software package reproducibly built should be byte for byte identical to the publicly-available package. Any difference would be evidence of tampering.

"The great thing with free software is that we have the freedom to study the source code," he said. "That it does not contain any malware, malicious code, or security bugs."

But how, Lunar asked, do we know that the compiled binary was built from the published source? How do we know the CIA, or other malicious attacker, has not tampered with the build process?

"We are not discussing a hypothetical attack here," he said. "This is a real attack. We are talking about developers in totally good faith producing software, the binary they would give you, and even if they are of good faith, we could be totally owned."

China Intends to Oust Dollar From Oil Trade

China is planning to launch its own oil benchmark in October, similar to Brent and WTI, striving for a more important role in establishing crude prices. Unlike the Western benchmarks, the Chinese contracts will be nominated in the yuan, not the US dollar.

Homeschool families in two different states are facing increased scrutiny from local officials that critics are calling an invasion of privacy.

To make matters worse, local officials in Kentucky and Mississippi are making demands of homeschool families that could be in violation of state laws.

The director of pupil personnel in Gallatin County, Kentucky, sent out letters informing parents that “in the coming year, county officials would visit the home of every homeschool program,” said T.J. Schmidt, a staff attorney at the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA).

The letter demanded a wide variety of information, including attendance records and report cards, each of which are required. But it went beyond that.

“It asked parents to indicate whether they specifically intended to follow the local school calendar,” Schmidt wrote. “It also insisted that parents inform the school district about how they were going to keep attendance records and how their instructional days would be documented.

The requests, he said, “exceeded the school’s authority under Kentucky law.”

The director backed down after receiving a letter from Schmidt.

“Schmidt informed [the director] that the forms requested information well beyond that required under Kentucky law,” an HSDLA press release noted. “He also informed the county that home visits would violate each homeschooling individual’s privacy rights, and that HSLDA would challenge any attempt to carry out these visits. Schmidt requested that the county notify all homeschool families that they would be dropping these extra-legal requirements.”

The county agreed with Schmidt, and letters were sent to homeschool families telling them to ignore the packet they had just received.

The Pacific Rim of Russia could soon see a mass migration of young people if a government scheme to repopulate this largely uninhabited area is successful. In an effort to promote self-reliance and good land stewardship, the Russian government is planning to grant every Russian citizen who wants it one hectare of land for free as long as these landholders use their land for farming, self-sufficiency, and/or other legal uses.

Russia's vast Far East territory is currently home to about six million people, but this number has been waning in recent years. The Russian government estimates that once the land grant program is initiated, 30 million more people could flock to the region, infusing new life into an area of Russia that would otherwise qualify as uninhabited Siberia.

"Free land grants [are] a powerful potential for developing our Eastern territories and an opportunity to radically – almost six fold – increase the far eastern population from 6.4 million to 36 million people," stated Alexander Galushka, the minister of development for this region, to the Siberian Times about the program.

If everything goes as planned, the program will come into effect on January 1, 2016, and run for 19 years. Russian citizens who take residency on these appropriated land plots will have to prove during the first five years that they're using them properly. After this five-year probationary period, land occupants will be given full ownership of their land in perpetuity.

The Real Refugee Problem – And How To Solve It

Last week Europe saw one of its worst crises in decades. Tens of thousands of migrants entered the European Union via Hungary, demanding passage to their hoped-for final destination, Germany.

While the media focuses on the human tragedy of so many people uprooted and traveling in dangerous circumstances, there is very little attention given to the events that led them to leave their countries. Certainly we all feel for the displaced people, especially the children, but let’s not forget that this is a man-made crisis and it is a government-made crisis.

The reason so many are fleeing places like Syria, Libya, Afghanistan, and Iraq is that US and European interventionist foreign policy has left these countries destabilized with no hopes of economic recovery. This mass migration from the Middle East and beyond is a direct result of the neocon foreign policy of regime change, invasion, and pushing “democracy” at the barrel of a gun.

Even when they successfully change the regime, as in Iraq, what is left behind is an almost uninhabitable country. It reminds me of the saying attributed to a US major in the Vietnam War, discussing the bombing of Ben Tre: “It became necessary to destroy the town in order to save it.”

The Europeans share a good deal of blame as well. France and the UK were enthusiastic supporters of the attack on Libya and they were early backers of the “Assad must go” policy. Assad may not be a nice guy, but the forces that have been unleashed to overthrow him seem to be much worse and far more dangerous. No wonder people are so desperate to leave Syria.

Yesterday, I reported on the fact that multiple outlets had reported three shooters in the San Bernardino massacre, including claims that they were white males. While we have been told that Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik were the ones who were the killers, former National Security Agency/ Central Intelligence Agency contractor Steven D. Kelley says that it was a false flag operation that was carried out by a tactical training company for the US military, known as Craft International.

Kelley, who is a weapons expert, was interviewed on Press TV on Tuesday and said that the shooting "is just one in a long string of false flag events that I am afraid to say are not over."

"We'll probably be seeing several more before the end of the year, because of the events that are going on in the world, specifically with the NATO being implicated in the buying of oil from Daesh and other events," he added.

"So when these things happen they need to have a rapid response which requires a false flag attack. This was very obvious that this was going to happen," Kelley continued.

"The people that were on the scene and saw this happen also reported that three tall white men wearing black shirts, khaki pants and tanned combat boots were actually the shooters," Kelley told Press TV. "The description is almost exactly what the gentlemen from Craft International, the mercenary organization that was involved in so many other false flags, actually look like. This seems to be their standard uniform."

While Obama took advantage of the crisis to attack the rights of gun owners, Kelley said, "The people that are being implicated – the couple – first of all if they were planning something, if they were radicalized as this is being said, and clearly the NSA, the FBI will be right on the top of these people all the time, but rather than stopping them from doing something, they were nurtured to be used for this exact purpose."

Six years ago when this picture was taken of my son and myself, I still held out hope that the Independent Media could rescue this country from the tyrants that have hijacked our government. When I became a parent, I mistakenly thought that I would raise my son just like my parents raised me. My parents instilled in me a fundamental respect for authority, how to honor the great traditions of our country and how to work hard to get what I wanted out of life.

I grew up loving the ideals of our country, the freedom and the opportunity. As a result, I have lived a good and prosperous life. I give thanks to my parents and to God everyday for my good fortune. However, I have learned that I was not fully prepared to be a parent because I do not know how to teach my teenage son about how he should live in the New World Order.

The America we knew is dead and gone and is running solely on momentum. Are any of you asking the same question that I am about how we tell our teenage children that they live under a hopelessly corrupt government and they are making plans to fully enslave all of us under REX 84, FEMA Camps, NDAA, etc? How do we provide our children hope that if they work hard and go to college, that they will have a good life? The Fascist War Against Small Business Persists

Banks are sending notices of account closure out to small businesses across the country, to clients they've done business with for years, even decades. The reason? They often don't provide one.

But a growing number of business owners believe they know why they're being cut off from the financial system. It's Operation Choke Point, ostensibly an attempt to crack down on fraudulent businesses, but in reality a dragnet that has ensnared innocent entrepreneurs unfairly classified as "high-risk" players.

Earlier this year, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) chairman Martin Gruenberg told Congress that Choke Point was over, but many business owners believe the FDIC and the Department of Justice have passed enforcement duties along to a newly created independent agency: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), the brainchild of progressive senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.). The CFPB operates under the guidance of the Federal Reserve and doesn't rely on Congress for funding, which critics say allows it to operate without any meaningful checks on its power.

Reason TV profiled two business owners who believe they've been targets of Choke Point and its legacy: a payday lender in Southern California and a hookah seller in North Carolina. Brian Wise of the U.S. Consumer Coalition, an organization that's been compiling Choke Point stories from across the nation, also appears in the video.

Renewed Calls for Gun Control Laws Spur Sales … Yet Again!

Renewed calls for more restrictive gun laws, following a succession of fatal shootings in the United States, immediately appear to be generating a boost for the gun industry.

Newly released August records show that the FBI posted 1.7 million background checks required of gun purchasers at federally licensed dealers, the highest number recorded in any August since gun checks began in 1998. The numbers follow new monthly highs for June (1.5 million) and July (1.6 million), a period which spans a series of deadly gun attacks — from Charleston to Roanoke — and proposals for additional firearm legislation.

While the FBI does not track actual gun sales, as multiple firearms can be included in a transaction by a single buyer, the National Instant Criminal Background Check System's numbers are an indicator of a market upswing in the face of growing anxiety about access to guns.

"Whenever there is a call for gun control, sales increase,'' said Larry Keane, general counsel for the firearm industry trade association National Shooting Sports Foundation. "Unfortunately, this is a pattern that repeats itself."

Many of us have suspected for years that American elections are a sham. Not only does it seem like nothing changes no matter how many times we vote the bums out, but sometimes the votes themselves don’t seem to add up. Especially now that we have electronic voting machines, which don’t provide a whole lot of accountability and are notoriously easy to hack.

Fortunately, you can still tell when the votes don’t make sense, even with electronic voting machines. In states like Kansas, where in some counties they use electronic voting machines that also record the votes on paper tapes, there seems to be some blatant inconsistencies with the voting results from the past few elections.

Beth Clarkson, chief statistician for Wichita State’s National Institute for Aviation Research, said last week that she noticed results for the last several elections in the state failed to add up. “If we’re not being counted accurately, we’re losing our right to vote without even being aware of it,” she said at an event commemorating the 95th anniversary of the 19th amendment, which granted women the right to vote.

Clarkson has sued the state of Kansas for the power to examine the voter tapes, which record every stroke a voter casts on the machines. In Sedgwick County, for example, that amounts to 385 feet of tape stored in 42 boxes. Clarkson is eager to examine the records, claiming she noticed abnormalities in the numbers.

“I don’t understand why those patterns are there, the patterns are very definitely real. But we don’t know what’s causing them or why they’re there. They do fit what would be expected if election fraud is occurring, and that’s very concerning.”

“This is not just an anomaly that occurred in one place,” Clarkson said in April. “It is a pattern that has occurred repeatedly in elections across the United States.” She says the pattern routinely favors traditional Republicans — even over Tea Party candidates.
