I am actually going to 'homeless' and just travel around by hitchhiking. Any good things to remember? I'm reading lots of guides on this, and I have lots of guide books downloaded for me to use. For food, I will be dumpster diving, trying to get someone to buy food for me, or catching food inna woods. Might even create my own board and log my adventures…
If you want to join me, feel free. I could always use a friend. (Although, we can not have the group of people higher then two. Will be unable to hitchhike.)

I am halfway knowledgeable on dumpster diving. Where do you intend to be doing this? Location makes a HUGE difference as to how to approach dumpster diving.

Western United States.

You will be fine doing this in most of the Pacific Northwest. I wouldn't do it down south, though. Things go badly far faster in warmer climates and southern places in the US tend to have a less "open" mindset when it comes to dumpster diving.

You know the basic rules:
Canned foods are great to go for
Dried meats are also good to go for
Avoid all fresh meat
Try to avoid starchy things that accumulate mold and bacteria quickly (bread, for example)

DO NOT dumpster dive out of public trashcans
ONLY dumpster dive out of commercial bins

You are best off dumpster diving out of commercial bins in the suburbs. These areas have few homeless people, the bins are usually not well secured, and there isn't really much competition.

I should also add that your idea of going "homeless" sounds bad in a very vague way. Even if you are camping and don't have a proper roof over your head, you should preferably not associate with actual homeless people, nor should you give off the air of actually being homeless. Slightly dirty college student? Sure. Homeless? No. People will be far less willing to help you in bad situations if they think you are homeless and you will most likely end up associating with very unsavoury people who will take advantage of you.

Always have enough money on-hand or on a card to get back home or to family/friends at any given time if you desperately need to.

I recommend having it hidden on your body (not in your pocket or in your shoes) and it should be enough to cover multiple Greyhound rides or even a cheap one-way flight.

Yep. I mean I am not going to sit around in a city all day. I mostly want to do this for traveling and building some wilderness skills in case of a happening.

Thanks. This is invaluable information.

Then I recommend sticking to national and state parks in the Pacific Northwest.

Have waterproof clothes that dry quickly, a good knife, flint, a fishing pole, a small tent, and enough tarp. Have a small emergency radio or satellite walkie-talkie that can alert authorities with GPS. Everything you need (except the tent and fishing pole) should be able to fit into a school-type backpack.

BE SURE THAT THE PARK RANGERS KNOW YOU ARE THERE

Building my wilderness skills is part of my plant. Alongside going incognito, and just getting some freedom. I doing this as a more religious thing. (Not actually religious, just /fringe/.)

>im spiritual, not religious!1111!!!

just kidding.

If you want to go incognito, just buy an iphone and a corolla :D

Looking like an adventurer is a surefire way to NOT look incognito in a city (at least in the US)
