No.10581
Do you think the multiple protagonists thing will carry over to TWD season 3? After playing Borderlands, I think they could do something where you play as Clem and Kenny if you went with him. You play as Clem and Jane if you went with her. You play as only Clem, or Clem and a new character if you ended up alone.
No.10582
>>10581It wouldn't work. At it's core Borderlels are designed for two protagonists, each have their own traits and quirks. Each one have their own story to tell.
No.10583
>>10582I'm usually not the optimistic type, but I figure if it works in one game it can work in another. Also, Borderlands was two hours long. Multiple PCs in TWD might be what it needs for us to have long episodes again.
No.10584
>>10583There would need to be two stories instead of one to go with two protagonists, three different versions of it by your idea. I just can't see it happening.
No.10585
>>10584>There would need to be two stories instead of one to go with two protagonistsNot really. It can be the same story, just have the adult character do things that are too dangerous/unrealistic for Clem to do, rather than have Clem be the only competent person in the apocalypse.
No.10586
>>10581Multiple protags could work, but not the way you're describing. Making certain main characters "optional" just guarantees those characters will be underwritten and uninteresting, not to mention completely pointless. If there has to be another player protagonist besides Clem, instead of Jane or Kenny, who would have to be unimportant enough to be removed entirely from some people's play-throughs, it would AJ or a new character.
No.10587
>>10586What do you mean optional? Because the secondary character you have is determinant? I don't think that would mean the secondary character would be underwritten, they would just need to spend an equal amount of time and effort on both characters. Also, Kenny and Jane are already established characters, I don't see how they would be uninteresting.
I don't think AJ as a PC can be done, if what I hear is true about telltale not being allowed to go too far ahead in the timeline. That would make him only about two years old, and I doubt AJ would be able to do much at that age.
Now a new character that's expendable enough to be removed from a playthrough is an interesting idea. I see something like a bunch of new characters are introduced each episode, but you don't play as the secondary character until halfway through the episode, so you don't know what interactions with which characters are important in that aspect until you start playing as them. And the character is determinant each episode, so you can decide for yourself for how long you want to keep them around for.
No.10588
>>10587I think we're on different wavelengths here. The point I was making is that a main character that can be removed from a story with no significant impact on said story is a pointless character. A main character has to be a centerpiece to the story, a story has to be about the main character. That's storytelling 101. It doesn't matter if they're a new character or a returning one.
I realize I was being unclear with this statement…
>If there has to be another player protagonist besides Clem, instead of Jane or Kenny, who would have to be unimportant enough to be removed entirely from some people's play-throughs, it would AJ or a new character.…so let me clarify. What I really wanted to say is if there's is a second playable main character, whether it's Jane, Kenny, AJ, a new character, etc., that character has to be irrevocably tied to the plot. Basically, they have to be present in everyone's play-through. Every character, like every scene, every shot, every line of dialogue, has to have a purpose to the overall story, and if they can be safely removed, then there's no point to having them there.
This isn't even taking into account the cost of hiring voice actors for characters that wouldn't be present in most people's play-throughs, the cost for each hour of recording dialogue (from optional conversations in dialogue trees to quips when examining objects), the cost of making unique animations for each character, to the effort to make each of these replaceable character's somehow relevant to the plot, to making each replaceable character as interesting and significant as each other (which never works), etc.
No.10589
>>10588>the cost of making unique animations for each characterAt least with regards to facial animations, Telltale cuts corners in this department by reusing certain characters for others. For example, most characters in 400 Days are rehashed from characters in the main story. Shel and Stephanie are Lilly, Nate and Eddie are Lee, Wyatt is Doug, Vince is Glenn, etc.
No.10590
>>10588Cont'd
Imagine, if you would, if Clementine was an optional character in S1. Let's say Lee had the option early on to go to a few different houses other than Clem's and each house contains a completely new and unique child character. Depending on who's house he chooses to go to, that child character will then accompany Lee for the rest of the game as a main character. That would definitely be interesting, but the overall story as it was written would be suffer greatly. That's because the story was written with Clementine in mind as a main character; the plot and Lee's character utterly depend on Clementine being the character that she is. She's 'irreplaceable', she can't be safely removed and replaced from the story. The same has to be true with a second playable main character in S3. An interesting, compelling main character can't be replaced.
No.10591
>>10590Forget about what I said about "expendable characters". I misunderstood what you were saying before.
No.10592
>>10590Well you can't completely rule out the possibility that TTG could write two separate stories that later converge, instead of "character swapping". However, that would be a pretty ambitious undertaking and I don't think TTG has the time or manpower to accomplish that.
No.10593
http://strawpoll.me/3396313I wanna know how many people know that they can post here again.
No.10594
>>10592To be clear I didn't say Kenny and Jane couldn't show up and have a role of some importance in S3, just that they couldn't be main protagonists, because, as I explained, the story would have to be written with both of them in mind as main characters in the same nominal role, which is impossible because they're both determinant.
>Well you can't completely rule out the possibility that TTG could write two separate stories that later converge, instead of "character swapping".If we're talking S3, then swap "stories" with "intros" and I can see this happening. It would mirror the S2 intro in formula: Clem starts game with x character, x character dies/ disappears from the story. Separate "stories" lasting one episode or longer will never happen because of the financial and artistic problems I pointed out here.
>>10588 As you said your yourself, it would be "ambitious", and the incredible cost would likely mean it wouldn't make it's money back. The result would also likely be terrible.
Personally, I'd rather see the S2 endings and Kenny's and Jane's fates resolved in S2 DLC so S3 could be it's own story, but that doesn't seem like it'll happen.
No.10595
>>10594sameanon
This really strayed off-topic, didn't it? Multiple Walking Dead protags? I prefer the story stay focused on Clem, but I can see it. Those other playable characters better be interesting and important and not muddle the story or Clementine's character development.

It was a pain in the butt to find a usable blanket model, and when I rendered it out it had weird lighting bugs.
I decided to just scrap it for now and go with this. Hope you guys like it.
>>10594DLC seems like the best way to bridge the gap between the endings. Doing that would also make S3 a lot more focused since it wouldn't have to deal with Kenny or Jane (inevitably) dying/leaving halfway through and the whole season feeling a bit disjoint as a result.

I'm just afraid I can't keep Clementine and her seperated, only to reinforce those thoughts about Clem. It sounds so odd, too. Clementine, a young little girl I love so, so much, so pure in every way. Then I'd be forming an image in my mind that as she grows up to a young beautiful woman, she'd be a whore.
