So I watched Ghostbusters today and I thought it was awful. I don't get the praise at all.

It wasn't funny or entertaining and Bill Murray was really annoying in this movie.

So what exactly is so good about it??

Oh my god his opinion differs! Quick, re-integrate into the hivemind before you start thinking for yourself.

Seriously. You just listed all the things you KNOW others like about the movie and you happen to not like them. Do you really think there is more to the movie that you somehow missed? You just have a different taste than all the people that loved the jokes.

Perhaps it's the absurdity of the premise. 4 guys create a business around catching ghosts. That's silly in and of itself.

Perhaps it's the quirkiness of the characters like Egon's Spock-like personality or Ray's childish naivety or Winston's sensible observations.

Or maybe we just like looking at pretty lights and monsters when we were kids. I don't know.

Honestly Ghostbusters is a little overrated largely because a lot of people watched it as children.

I wouldn't go as far as saying awful but if you go into it with hyped up expectations you'll probably not get it.

 No.268854

Also this.

Some of the funny is supposed to come from a fucking giant marshmallow man but most of it is in the sheer absurdity of the premise and complete incompetence of the characters.

This incompetence was also a pretty major contrast to other films of the time.

I'm fine with the premise. Since it's a supposedly a comedy, it really doesn't matter how absurd it is, as long as it was funny. The problem was this movie wasn't. I didn't laugh once while watching it and wanted to stop watching it halfway through

I've never watched it with the understanding that it's supposed to be funny because it plainly isn't. It's just some nice silly action entertainment.

Are you telling me people actually laugh out loud at this movie?

It's not a masterpiece but it's not a bad movie.

Most of us probably like it out of nostalgia. Speaking of which, how is it even possible you grew up and never watched Ghostbusters as a kid?

And are you so young you didn't even grew up with the Ghostbusters cartoons? Jesus christ anon.

 No.269239

To be fair, the whole setup of having an incompetent group of guys dealing with some weird science fantasy catastrophe has actually been copied many times since Ghostbusters.

It was unique at the time and helped set the standard for what came many times after.

It's a bit like how many people can watch Citizen Kane and think it's a fairly cheesy movie now, even while it helped promote a variety of directorial techniques that became so popular they were copied to death.

>>269187

Yes. Many people have found the movie laugh out loud funny.

 No.269251

>>268815

Ghostbusters was a product of its time. If you watch for the first time now, it won't be as good as it would be watching it back then or when seeing it when you are a kid.

I watched it recently for the first time too, and didn't enjoy it all that much either. Whole Bill Murray annoyingly wooing Weaver subplot could be just cut out and it would probably make the movie better.

 No.269310

Criticizing Ghostbusters for being "not funny" is the opposite of nostalgia. Modern comedies suck, and generally don't even have a plot. They shouldn't even be movies, but sketch comedy shows or stand-up routines. Every modern comedy needs at least 2 big "jokes" per scene, but older comedies weren't like that. You didn't even need 1 joke per scene because they were movies first, and the goal of a movie is to have a narrative.

Ghostbusters "not funny" nature is a matter of it not being a modern comedy and not existing to throw out as many jokes as possible in every scene because it is catering to an audience of 80 IQ brown people who keep Hollywood afloat.

Liking Ghostbusters isn't nostalgia. Not liking it is a modern bias that prefers lolsorandumb garbage that is frenetic and unwatchable if you are a sober adult.

It seems like you're saying older comedies didn't try to cram as many jokes into every scene as they possibly could, to the point of making the plot into a senseless formality. But some did, and some that did were great.

I agree that modern comedies suck, but it's for a lot of different reasons. Not all of those reasons are universal (political correctness and low effort DUDE WEED LMAO don't usually coincide, for instance) but the fact that all of those reasons are in play pretty much prevents anything unique or excellent from getting produced.

You are right that the jokes in modern comedies are usually the safest, lowest common denominator thing the filmmakers could think of but that's not the same as fast pacing or an irrelevant story.

 No.269336

>>268815

>It wasn't funny

Agreed, but I think that's only because I watched this movie as such a young kid that I was too engrossed in the Ghostbusting aspect to get the humor. When I later "got it", I'd seen it too many times to find it funny.

"Yes, it's true. This man has no dick" is just a brilliant scene, even if you can't laugh out loud at it/sense of humor is broken.

>or entertaining

No. It's a very fun movie that can be enjoyed on multiple levels. It's a true family movie unlike the crap that is passed off as being for the whole family today.

>and Bill Murray was really annoying in this movie.

I don't think he's annoying, but I don't feel he's that funny, though this may just be the effect I mentioned before.

People go on about his adlibbing in this movie, but to me it sounds like it's part of the script and people are waiting for him to finish his superfluous dialogue before they start. I'm not that keen on Bill Murray, ultimately, but he's not obnoxious.

Thank you. I see how popular it were, how many people absolutely loved it but I could not get that feeling. Thanks this thread for explaining me that it mostly tied to nostalgia. I find some of the jokes funny but Bill Murray really rub me the wrong way and the only character I liked is the BlackSidekick.

it's just "scary movie" from the past, sort of spoofing a popular genre at the time and making pop culture jokes that aged like shit, like they usually do.

i explain airplane! being considered "one of the funniest movies of all times" the same way i explain the beatles being "the greatest band of all times" : it's what people who detain most power and influence right now used to watch back in the day.

> comedy movies aren't supposed to be funny

Genius logic right there.

> You didn't even need 1 joke per scene because they were movies first, and the goal of a movie is to have a narrative.

No, the movie IS the narrative. And you need creative, well timed humor to make a good comedy, which is not the case of Ghostbusters. Guess now you will say that action movies don't need good action.

> Ghostbusters "not funny" nature is a matter of it not being a modern comedy and not existing to throw out as many jokes as possible in every scene because it is catering to an audience of 80 IQ brown people who keep Hollywood afloat.

No, the "not funny" nature is a matter of it not being funny. Also, back to stormfront.

> Liking Ghostbusters isn't nostalgia. Not liking it is a modern bias that prefers lolsorandumb garbage that is frenetic and unwatchable if you are a sober adult.

Not liking Ghostbuster is mere a result of disliking boring, unfunny movies. This has nothing to do with the era the movie was released. Stop blaming modern movies for its blandness, if modern movies were good Ghostbusters would still be meh.

It is. It is a technique employed quite often in the pursuit of selling degenerate remakes by shitting on the old version. Happened with Total Recall, Robocop, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, etc. etc.

OP is a shill and samefagging the thread to death in an attempt to tarnish memories of the previous film and making accepting the new one easier. If the "old one wasn't that good" then the new one has much less to stack up against.

Joke is in this case the original was very good and OP comes off as a complete faggot forcing it being the opposite of what it is remembered as.

Well, it appears you've run into the incredibly rare (almost unheard of!) phenomenon called "I don't like something that a lot of other people like". It can be difficult to cope with, but don't panic. You can help deal with it with a simple technique I like to call "Just watch something else".
