The worst of the Sonicfags latched onto the series when it was going through a Dark Ages where game design was no longer important thus leading to the autists to latch onto the games' message of friendship and other generic shonen stuff for escapism. I believe the furfags came because the comics at the time was very popular to them and was mostly angsty furry drama which also had generic shonen and edgelord 12 year old shit.
2010: My Little Pony is popular because of the discovery that a girly show doesn't have to talk down to the audience. The most autistic leaves the Sonic fandom for MLP because it's more open friendship message and fame for being a subversive girl show (as in putting a decent effort) makes it safer to become a fan of. It also helps that the Sonic series has gotten less shonen and focuses more on its history as a video game (comic no longer had bland furry drama and is now more faithful to the games, while modern game, despite what reddit says, has a more focused game design that actually offers something fun) MLP attracts the autists and they state its the best show of modern animation because of its escapism. This in turn attracts animation snobs that were nostalgic of their kid shows from the 90's. You know the one, the one loved their "dark and edgy" kids show and calls them the best despite not knowing anything about animation techniques or other genres of animation. The brony fandom introduces the concept of extreme circlejerking alongside the furry autists that now masturbate to pony ass. It also introduces the idea that a media that has a comforting, non-rude and friendly environment is the superior media, which introduces something really ugly in the fandoms.
This leads us to Steven Universe. Notice how the show wasn't as popular as it was today until the introduction of a lesbian couple in the first season finale. The circlejerking snob seeking escapism would then latch onto this show for that reason, not to mention having the same features that made MLP attractive to them such as the soft and friendly environment. The difference is that while MLP was obviously designed for children, SU seemed to have the adult audience in mind. But specifically the Tumblr crowd which grew around the time it was popular. Which explains why SU would give off allegories of not following gender roles such as effeminate men like even the main character himself. It tried so much to be diverse but it attracted the new SJW movement that strives to be seen as holier than thou for accepting what they think history will praise just like the circlejerk from MLP thinking they're taking part in what will be famous in animation history. However, the circlejerk of SU became influenced from the SJW movement's corrupted idealogy and thus leading us to episodes where a teenage artist was cyberbullied to death for drawing something against the SJW mindset. The SJW movement that combined with the circlejerk escapist hivemind has also corrupted the Undertale fandom, by appealing to the fans who seek the game for its friendly atmospher and pacifist message. (God bless poor Toby. He knew there was a chance his fandom would go south)
I think the lesson here is that trying to make a show specifically to create an escapist dream will attract assholes who seek safe spaces from reality and refuses to grow up. Other autistic fandoms doesn't have to follow a circlejerk mindset and could just appear to be followed by immature perverts or literal 12 year olds like FNAF or Sonicfags (specifically from media that focuses less on the game design like the mid 2000s games or the early Archie comics).

You see this in action when the SU fags screamed about a brony making a sister site to another brony site and made a huge hissy fit about it. And then we have the circlejerk escapist Undertale fandom which actually made death threats to an FNAF fan who wanted to make a crossover between FNAF and Undertale.
I'm in a sincere belief that the circlejerk hivemind part of a fandom are worst because they're determined that their delusions is what makes a media superior and in turn makes them hypocritical and now the SJW movement had made them even more delusional but also dangerous if the death threats are to go by. They're like Dolores Umbridge, in which they try to appear cutesy while hiding a more malicious and unstable mindset. Perverted autists can change and be contained, but the circlejerk is pure cancer and will destroy a fandom.
