Maybe it's lame, but I like Christopher Reeve the best. He was the first Superman I know, so I've got this nostalgia.

Well Dean Cain is the only actor to play him in live action that matches the character's Kanasian politics.

Christopher Reeve's Superman was the only one to fight for the american way, so objectively the canon one.
Also, at least in his time capeshit was still cool.
>capeshit is what kills hollywood

He looks too Hispanic. And I don't like live-action capeshit. Comics are meant to be animated. Batman the animated series from the 90's is the best Batman, and the Fleischer 40's Superman is the best Superman. Actors in spandex just looks ridiculous.

in a post 9/11 world the only acceptable answer is henry cavill's superman.
dean cain's version worked well in the 90s, when the american ideals the character embodies were seen as corny and old fashioned. it was okay to have a cartoonishly nice and naive superman back then, because the u.s. was in a period of relative peace and prosperity. there were no real ominous threats facing the nation, no foes we couldn't dominate, so there was no need for a brutally tough defender. to an extent the same is true of reeve's superman.
brandon routh's version played to the nostalgic sentimentality of a people in denial of what their world had become. his superman giving way to cavill's was an acknowledgement of the realities facing us. say what you will about zach snyder, but at least his eyes are wide open.

In the first 20 minutes, while he looks like that and acts in secret, he is really great.
After that the movie turns into a shitfest, that has 0 things Nolan and 0 things Snyder.

I found Superman Returns to be genuinely entertaining. It was sort of the last capeshit movie that was honest about being capeshit.
Nowadays when people try to make capeshit, they take it way too seriously. It's like they hate having their career mired in superhero flicks, and yet they refuse to turn down the job opportunities. So they stop calling them heroes, they stop putting the hero's name in the movie title, they scrap the iconic costume in favor of darker, duller colors - all in the ridiculous hope of having their version of capeshit taken seriously.

This. I've enjoyed Superman Returns.
Just one thing: Kevin Spacey was a much better Lex Luthor than Gene Hackman.
I guess people bashed it because of the reasons you've stated

Superman Returns explored what it's like for Superman as a person to have that kind of responsibility and nobody caring about him.
Man of Steel explored explosion what flashback it's like for alien invasion Superman to necksnap have shitty parents who 9/11 never teach him jesus metaphor the responsibility that comes with female jimmy olsen being stronger black perry white than everyone else.
