American Dad is an improvement in more ways that just removing cutaway gags faggot though that's a major improvement in and of itself.
Consistent main characters, actual fucking plots, side-characters that have at least some mild depth (Patrick Stewart and Principal Lewis being prime examples) and a lack of reliance on pop-culture for a start.
Farce/surrealism/satire and plots are the source of humour which is more than 'just' removing cutaway gags.
It also does a solid job of not pushing liberal ideologies (or did until S10): plenty of times Stan's views are shown to be right and Haley is shown to be a useless SJW shit. Sometimes he's wrong sure but he isn't completely incompetent and putting his family first is always a point.
Even the running jokes are better because they are understated, limited in number and don't rely on MUH RANDOM CHICKEN FIGHT. Some of them could even be considered plot arcs with actual goddamn changes in the show.
Seth's influence is more or less only as a voice actor, the one area he isn't completely incompetent in.
Granted the show never reached the highs of golden age Simpsons but it's a lot closer to that formula than it is to Family Guy.
Also Roger is a completely degenerate gay character rather than some idealised 'look how normal he is' bullshit.

>Did uncle seth parody something you're a fan of? Son, you have 15 years you should know that everything in this whole wide world can be made fun of.
Everything and anything can and should be mocked. This is a fundamental rule of a good society: nothing is sacred.
Seth's problem is not his humour being controversial its his reliance purely on randomness/controversy over actual content.
