Does anyone else think Rey from the new Star Wars is like Keira Knightley's character from Pirates of the Caribbean. The only difference is that for some baffling reason she's the main character.
It's been a repeated trend in media to have a surprisingly tough girlfriend or girl character who defies expectations (given it's so overused at this point though, it's actually become the expectation).
I'm not talking super heroes or anyone brainwashed. Just someone with 'training'. Training that allows them to win despite weight, height, body shape or gender disadvantages. For instance, I'm not talking about River from Firefly/Serenity, I'm talking about Zoe from that series.
Other examples off the top of my head include
>Black Widow
>The girl from Chuck
>The sister of Jackie Chan's character in that movie with CIA and Owen Wilson
>Asami in LoK (though she's done better than most)
>Peggy Carter
>Agent 99 in Get Smart
There introduction usually involves them flipping a character who made a comment about how they don't look tough FUCKING SHIT LORD. Whenever they get into a fight with a man, you know they're going to win because they're a woman.
It was only a matter of time before someone was stupid enough to take this lazy, overused character archetype and put it as the main character in a major film. Unsurprisingly, it doesn't work.
