It used to be a fun little series, I got some tapes from a friend in the 80s. It was re-branded for kids or something, I'm not really sure but it's terrible now.

It's "nerdy", but with a cheap soap opera story that Americans can love and no logic or consistency so you don't have to think at all in order to enjoy it. On top of that, it replaces any possible scientific explanations for things with British infant-speak (wibbly wobbly timey wimey) so you don't ever have to risk being hit with something you don't understand.

So it's "sci fi" that doesn't make dumb people feel dumb. People love it for the same reason anybody loves schlock.

i used to watch and actually enjoy this childlish shit some years ago and i'm so ashamed of it now

It has some really nice episodes between all the garbage. For instance the one where they visit a planet right on the edge of a black hole and some spooky shit happens. But yeah the good episodes are rare.

Check out some of the more highly rated episodes. It can be pretty good on occasion, but there's probably at least two bad episodes for every good one.

It's got a certain fairy tale quality to it in the newer episodes. The sci-fi stuff is just handwavey magic, when you get down to it.

The best shit happens when they go full horror movie and people are dying and crazy shit is happening and the Doctor isn't being the deus ex machina to his own story.

The worst shit is when they think we're going to care about the retarded shit they come up with as much as they want us to. Like, when they kill off an annoying character, or they let some asshole have his last heroic moment. Or they try to force some really heavy-handed pathos because we're supposed to empathize with a 900 year old magic crazy person in a time travel box who can't seem to stick to the rules that they make up on the spot.

i liked season 1-4, especially when eccleston was there

shit started going somewhat bad during tennants last season

and shit went horrible when they got matt smith, jesus fuck, i hate that cunt

i've only taken notice of doctor who during 11/matt smith's doctor

quite liked it, and boiled the appeal down to this

popular stories follow a hero, comedian or outsider.

the doctor is all three, but with three modern plot twists that add character depth

the story flirts with him being the anti-hero, being a tragic comedian, and the familiar outsider.

the show revolves around him, so everything can be as fun and ridiculous as possible because he's just as impossible.

win-win for anyone who likes all good things about entertainment.

personally watched it for the cheesy romance and dramatic twists. it's kinda like house m.d in that regard.

it pretty much peaked with matt, imo
