I blame spaghetti westerns.

They brought in a era that wanted gritty 'realness' in movie visuals, so the tights and colorful sets went out and everything became grey and browns, leather and worn rough cloth for costumes.

Also plays and musicals became much less popular, so Hollywood stopped converting them into films.
