So of course I'm not going to shit on any ideas, but if you need a starting point, pick a knight or princess, and imagine what their army must look like.

Okay, so, there are a lot of awesome monster ideas, but some monsters just don't seem important enough. Instead of trying to window dress them into a full encounter… put them in a bigger encounter. Yesno? (Pretend this is clean. Pretend that the right stats are in place instead of all of them being swiss cheeser)

(we just working on the mechanics)
Let's say there are 3 levels of monsters:
Level 1 are given 6 max points to give on the chart. Level 2, 9 max points and level 3 : 12)
For each positive perk, a monster should have one another negative (until a max of 3 negative)
I have made a temporary chart with and without special skill.
What do you think of this ?

And Goblin Princess by lifeless, unable to reproduce automatons.

Things like that.

>>2823 I say we make monsters super simple.
Health, Power, Speed, and maybe "Monster" stat. How lacking in understandibility they are. a Cthulhu beast would be 5 monster. A humanoid monster might be 0-1 monster. A beast or dragon might be between 2-4?
Just those stats, and a description and special power? Or perhaps a strength and a weakness rather than a special power?
We make them in groups of 3. Three to a princess. Each one thematically linked to be the things that cause a princess distress.
So whatever a princess hates or goes against her general themes? That's what will be in the tower.
That's how the princesses are kept trapped, especially the combat monsters.
The dragon princesses instead have vassals thematically linked to them, their servants.

Personally I'm against this thematic opposite idea because it undermines the premise of the gain. The Dragon Princesses more or less capture the other princesses on a whim, where are they getting the resources and/or charisma to hire and/or earn the loyalty of so many different units? It's no longer one dragon causing trouble, it's one international alliance taking on another international alliance. That being said, I require nunjas as a reoccuring enemy. I picture them working like the cats in Bunny Must Die. (And I still think we should make whichever monsters we feel like making. A theme will present itself when the time is right)

I'm thinking the compromise here between infinite resources and random hobo monsters is to give the Tower Kingdom a relatively small set of organizations that support it, and reuse them as needed.
So, a priory of the wyrm so we can have nunjas and dragon paladins, a society of artificers since

Skeletal Foot-Soldier + Powerful in numbers - Low strength and attack Wields an old worn broadsword. Skeletal Arbalist. + Decent shots, capable of accurately leading targets in most cases. Can pin down the average knight in groups. - Very low strength with little means of defense at close-range. Wields an old worn crossbow firing wood bolts. Drop: Hardtack (20%), Bonemeal (75%), Mourning Cap (5%). "Long ago an ancient kingdom withered away to dust, leaving behind only its faithful guards. With the royal family gone, the skeletal soldiers covet the princesses of modern kingdoms so that they may serve a purpose once more."

Hardtack is a notoriously tough cracker which I imagine would be a health restorative.
Bonemeal I feel would contain magical essences from fallen warriors, and could be a mana restorative for respective knights.
Mourning Cap is a mushroom that I believe would grow on vast fields where a lot of soldiers have fallen. It could be an alchemical ingredient.
These could be held in a side-pouch or something so they won't take up wagon space.

I like it because its setting is interesting and the lore is extensive while only being told through NPC dialogue and item descriptions. You can tell that a lot of love went into its design, and the gameplay shows that too by being difficult, but fair and rewarding.
What you'll hear the most in regards to Dark Souls is that it's impossibly hard. While it's certainly challenging, anybody with the right amount of persistence and will to experiment with different strategies can make it through to the end alone. Even if you hit a seemingly-impossible section, you can summon another player into your world to help guide you through.

These guys and the little clockwork tower dude can actually fit together under a magically animated theme. Tower Kingdom doesn't have a lot of people, but it does have enchantment to spare for making minions.
I still want nunjas. Maybe they're the sect that does all the animating for the tower kingdom? Also, I always picture Tower Girls as a Metroidvania violating Ghosts and Goblins with a broomstick.

In the case that Towergirls is a video game with this system, how about each 'gauntlet' features a knight that you have to rescue from a 'sticky situation.' Rescuing the knight allows him to be selected for future runs so there's always incentive to go back and mix/match gauntlet runs with different knights.

So let me just spitball this to sort of give myself an idea of what monsters could even be in a CYOA like this. Let me know what you think >Each generation, choose a set of minions that will stand between you and your princesses.>Each minion group has a certain set of loot items for beating them. The decision of what minion to choose comes from how well these drops work with your rout. Maybe something that negates a negative effect of a princess. Something not as crucial as dowery or lust items. Just little bonuses And if we're taking knights into account>Minions have the same stats stats as knights, so picking a minion with much higher stats than your chosen knight can be risky, but rewarding >Although they can drop specific weapons that increase a knights effectiveness in some way as long as it's the same weapon type as their default.

>>3636 >Each generation, choose a set of minions So-so on such limits.
Like I would like real variety in the enemies in each generation and thematic enemies suiting each princess is a lot better. It makes things less predictable. This is especially crucial in a CYOA where Tomb of Horrors stuff and dickish gimmick enemies are a staple. The latter becomes a lot less effective if you keep facing the same types for the entire generation.

Steps slowly but strafes swiftly to prod at foes with his ice-shard shortspear behind a wooden parma.
Feisty Penguin
+Fearless and unrelentless in battle.
+Fairly beefy and can deliver blows in rapid succession.
-Easily-exhausted.

-Little means of defense.
Charges ahead without hesitation delivering a flurry of cuts with hooked ice kukris.

+Adapts well to shadows and small spaces.
+Able to deal massive damage in hit-and-run stealth tactics.
+Adorable, thus negates suspicion and invokes feelings of crushing guilt upon defeat.
-Is but a wee child.
-Very low defense.
Creeps in the shadows of caverns and glacial cracks, itching to fatally strike with icicle stilettos.

If you're still in the mood for winter stuff. How about the "Snow Golem" aka a Snow Man.
An artic fox and trapper. Artic fox is kind of like Sneaky Penguin however his gimmick is taking your things and generally harassing you while running very fast. The trapper owns the fox so if the fox is nearby it's an indication that there is also a few beartrap hazards and the trapper himself hidden somewhere. Could be a small guy in furs and a hood that even Kenny would think is too tight.
If you feel like moving on I was thinking a good opponent to Insect Princess would be wasps. Also a social bug but are predatory and it kind of adds irony to her alternative costume. Also fungus stuff like cordyceps. Another thing ants dislike.
Or Fiery things, because of the past-time of burning ants to death. Sometimes with a magnifying glass other times with fuel and torches.

You've got me thinking about Insect Princess, though. Do we have a mushroom princess yet? I like to imagine cordycep fungus warriors were sent in to re-take their princess, and you find them in the heat of battle against the wasps. That'd mean fighting two completely different kinds of enemies.

>>3981 Not necessarily, the princesses are also separated by Generation so keep that in mind. Here's the charts for reference.
That doesn't mean your idea is ruled out completely.
They could be secondary (not necessarily second class though) races living in a kingdom. Possibly make up a good amount of its fighting force.
Here's some candidates.
Slime Princess's hivemind colony could have powerful fungus living there and with the addition of life pearls some come to life but end up being a race of their own.
Drider Princess is said to come from a kingdom full of rejected and horrifying beings, but it doesn't say they're all spiders. They probably live where fungus would be plentiful. Moist, humid, dark.
In fact, you could associate them with Dwarves who domesticate and use them for labour and cheap cannon fodder.

Insect Princess is captured by Apian warriors or bandits, but territorial disputes lead the Dwarves to send a slave Cordyceps raiding party in an attempt to take the princess in the name of Labyrinthian Mine Kingdom.

Anonymous 04/12/15 (Sun) 22:25:27 5f22de No. 4160
>>4154 It totally wasn't intentional but you could kind of work off that. Like DPII went after groups mostly devoted to the idols rather than extorting the wealth of kingdoms. So she ended up getting mixed groups. I feel Ogre is one of the better ones though because it's a unique scenario (she is in fact a princess of a kingdom but still not your typical race/kingdom combo) and ogres probably aren't the type to have a kingdom anyway.
Gats kind of had his hands tied on the human princesses because those were in the line up and he seemed to want to write them in with High Forest Kingdom rather than give them their own kingdoms.

I've been meaning to introduce ideas to the Setting Book thread, but I'm not sure if they'll fit. There seems to be an amount of established lore, but I don't really know where I can go to learn about it all. Hell, I don't even know if fan ideas can be taken as canonical. Is there a wiki?
I know Towergirls is a CYOA game, but I'm looking at it like an action RPG with very simple elements that keep it compatible with a CYOA/D&D perspective. The result is a shameless Dark Souls-esque mindset when I think about how players would navigate each 'gauntlet' and deal with enemies, and that means backing them with a similar kind of vague lore which may or may not fit with what's already established.
Anonymous 04/13/15 (Mon) 20:57:20 5f22de No. 4253
>>4250 I'm more of a narrative type but it actually leads to similar results because the theme would be very cartoony and it'd have similar Darks Souls-esque mindset in that it's all about screwing over the player in a retro fashion.
There's not much canon beyond the charts. We're just kind of making it up as we go and popular ideas become canon at the moment. 1d4chan has some stuff on towergirls but not on canon or anything like that.
Like the Dragon Princess General thread just decided names for the Dragons and that's kind of how it goes. Even the name Ace for the default knight is more like popular opinion than outright stated.

Drops: Three good-luck pebbles (100%) "Lumbering automaton wielding a chunk of a glacier as a weapon. Not even the penguins that utilize them know how the mighty golems came to be, but they bear a striking resemblance to Human creations. >>4345 That's a good line up of opponents. So what do you imagine these items do? Particularly the alchemy ingredients and luck pebbles.
Also are you going to base any of the fungi on the Mushroom Parent?
Unyin 04/15/15 (Wed) 01:05:22 d40402 No. 4378
>>4347 There are three primary resources per 'gauntlet': The HP restoratives- Frosty Berries for instance, the MP restoratives (for any magic-centric companions or knights) like Good-Luck Pebbles, and alchemical ingredients such as Walrus Tusks.
HP and MP restoratives only last while in their respective areas (that way there's little to no clutter in the wagon), but alchemical ingredients do not expire and can be stocked up over the journey. Combining alchemical ingredients in the hub kingdom creates potions with a range of effects from restoring HP to increasing the potency of elemental damages.
Having a wide range of restorative and alchemical items is handy in that it gives players ingredients to hunt for and provides a nice little lore boost when reading their descriptions. This system isn't perfect, but I think it's simple enough to expand upon and tweak without getting too complicated.
I've been thinking about the fungi for a while, and I'm not really sure how to portray them. The mushroom parents would work really well in this case, but I'd like to vary them up quite a bit to differentiate them from their DaS counterparts. A bloated spore-carrier fungi could be interesting as the heavy-hitter.
Anonymous 04/15/15 (Wed) 01:57:14 5f22de No. 4381
>>4378 Well now I feel bad because I'm drawing from more vidya here, but one gimmick that the fungi can focus on is status effects. Grass types (I know fungi aren't exactly plants) in Pokemon have all sorts of access to parasitic (draining moves, and a leeching status effect) and status effect moves (sleep, poison, paralysis, and the dreaded spore which was sleep but the attack never misses). What's an action adventure without annoying weakened states?
Unyin 04/15/15 (Wed) 02:17:22 d40402 No. 4382
>>4381 I can see that working out. I'm imagining certain effects which root you to the ground until you can slash your way out, or certain enemies who explode into a pool of mycelium creep which could leech stats or simply slow movement.
The issue with that is making sure there isn't all too much overlap with inevitable plant enemies.
Anonymous 04/15/15 (Wed) 02:42:15 5f22de No. 4383
>>4382 Well you can always split certain concepts. So parasitic/leeching stuff could be for fungi and the cordyceps hosting thing. Plants could have more diverse status effects and their annoying things are more defensive than aggressive (like thorns). Also I was thinking plants could have dynamic speed. So during the day they're quite fast but at night they're more sluggish.
Unyin 04/15/15 (Wed) 02:45:13 d40402 No. 4384
>>4383 I really like that idea. It'd make sense for leeching to be a fungi thing.
On the topic of the fungi slaves themselves, what kind of weaponry should they be carrying? I was thinking either mining tools or Dwarven gear. That way it could be inferred that they were being supplied by another power.
Anonymous 04/15/15 (Wed) 02:59:53 5f22de No. 4385
>>4384 Probably a mix of the two. Spades and pickaxes, drills if you want to get more unusual for the weakest. Dwarven weapons for stronger ones.

>>4386 Well that's up to you, but I'd like to see the wasps make an appearance.
They could be the lesser presence. One looks like a yellow jacket and are general cannon fodder. However, they're fast and airborne and that's what makes them stand out (birdlike enemies can focus on swarming while airbone).
The other is elite and larger, based on a different species of wasp. Could use their wings to blow gusts of wind or attempt to grapple you, fly up into the air, and drop you.
And to save space you have something inbetween both groups which is a infected with cordyceps wasp

The idea is for the enemy to charge towards the player in an attempt to spear or bludgeon them. A quick sidestep, however, and they'll miss their mark and eventually hit a wall and become stuck temporarily or fall off a cliff to their doom.
It'd be a pretty simple enemy that's easy to defeat, but shouldn't be overlooked because they'll tear you up if you aren't mindful.

I just want to say I like your HP and MP icons a lot.
I came up with a (really) rough sketch and for enemies of undead or supernatural princesses in general. They're a very fanatical mercenary group of superstitious monster hunters.
They're actually a pretty hostile group in general. Will assume anyone in the area is an ally of the undead princesses. Your Knight can have a similar motif to theirs and it might give you a chance to calm them down but they're still not very trusting. A bit like the Scarlet Crusade to make a Warcraft reference.
A lot of their gimmicks focus on disabling your abilities, resisting magical things in general, and healing. Some minor fire utility too.
This is the grunt equivalent. More elite members are more like "Paladins" or "Vampire Hunters".

Yeah, I think they'd have a minor presence with a few exceptions for the most part. However, if you start using magic they become a >lot< more common and harder to deal with.
Here's another group that could bug the undead princesses. A group of researcher necromancers. They want to know what makes princesses like Skeleton and Ghost tick and are also known for doing stupid B-movie horror experiments. Meaning their test subjects often end up killing them and rampaging.
I thought of two gimmicks besides using some undead as minions.
One is that they're potion, item, and poison users.
The other is that they have minor precognitive abilities due to practicing a form of necromancy. As in they're the original kind of necromancer which uses the dead as divination and so they can channel spirits to predict all your moves and avoid them. Kind of hard to do well in any type of game though.

Would make them very temporary boosts because getting a stat increase or advantage is worth a lot more in a 1d6 set-up or any game that has a stat maxed out at <10 points.

well the alternative is making the secondary effect some kind armor enchantment or poison attack etc.
I figure alchemy would be reserved for knights with high int, a dowry, or companion anyways.
was thinking stat boosts would come from items made from those things and you'd get accessory slots and a certain amount of customization slots in armor and weapons.

That makes more sense. I would still cap the amount of times you can boost a stat or something, although you can choose to reset your bonuses for different sets and stuff. Kind of like what Pokemon does for its direct stat boosting.

Another alternative is increasing the effectiveness of alchemy in accordance to the intelligence stat.
For a basic example, a low INT knight could create a potion of 10% healing, and a max INT knight could create a potion of 75% healing or something. Of course those aren't hard numbers; I need to sit down and plot out mechanics sometime before Towergirls withers away.

could be as simple as giving a knight an "Alchemy and You" Guidebook so he can make alchemical stuff.
Obviously guys like Gonne Knight and Arcane Knight wouldn't need it but it'd be an easy way to let otherwise alchemy incapable knights make stuff.
could also draw up a group of alchemists for hire who act like those merchants in RE4.

My original plan was for there to be a central Inn to act as the hub world. There you'd find an alchemy set, other companions you can't bring around in the cart, rescued knights to swap out with, beds for lewd, etc.
The alchemists-for-hire could be found on the road or in gauntlets for some quick alchemy on the go.

I kinda like the idea that some knights have access to a hub and others wander around and get extra dungeons to plunder depending on their past life and current affiliations.
Dog Knight wants to be a dashing rogue so he might hang out with a band of thieves and gypsies, arcane knight's a wizard so he might know a spell that takes him to some kind of demiplane, Silver Knight's an archtypical paladin so maybe he hangs out a mildly ritzy inn etc etc.

oh right, I quit pokemon awhile back so I dunno much about their stat boosting but the current rule on all boosts is that they're capped at +2 and the negatives are capped at -2 so I'd say a knight gets one or two accessories depending on his outfit and attitude, two "weapon" slots, and one suit of armor so that a maximum of 5 different boosts or abilities. (we can say for instance that you can only have two dowries active at once and they take up your accessory slot) So an item could be made that does a stat boost, or gives a situational modifier, or gets a damage boost etc etc.

Goblins for instance could be widespread monsters for hire, orcs would be a good warrior race that could serve as elite mooks, dog kemonomimi would make for good defensive warriors, cats would probably be a combination of ninja and samurai. While time-traveling baddies aren't entirely out of the question (in fact I'd be surprised if we don't end up seeing some in time), the explanation goes like this:
The Dwarves have enslaved the mushroom people and are forcing them to carve out tunnels for them. Insect Princess has been captured by a band of hardy wasps during a territorial dispute between the Dwarven and Insect kingdoms over tunneling rights, and militarized mushroom people are conscripted to retrieve Insect Princess to use as leverage in negotiations.
The player would enter the gauntlet right in the middle of a siege in this conflict. As wasp battlements struggle to hold back the mycotic horde, the player cuts through both forces to retrieve Insect Princess against all odds.
Amidst the turmoil, the Dwarven commanders call for cordyceps spores to be released to crush both the wasp forces and the player knight, a move that proves highly controversial, and ideally ineffective.
I've got one more idea for a mushroom enemy, then I move on to wasps. Then we'll talk a very special Frankenstein.

Honey Bee drones are big (wide anyway), loud (wings make a lot of noise) and complete pushovers (no stinger, are basically pampered pets until winter when they serve no purpose and are kicked out to die)

Males are born, live long enough to mate with the queen and her offspring and then die shortly thereafter due to a quirk in their biology. After winter the old nest is abandoned and the cycle repeats.

Looks good, and a very annoying enemy to deal with. I like it.
I compiled a few more enemy ideas I had into a list. Just bouncing them off the thread to see if any stick.
General mooks (stronger members of this group are much more prevalent in the Dragon's Lair)
Lesser dragonkin or other reptile types similar to Kremlings and kobolds
Mermaid Princess
Some water enemies (sharks delinquent types?) and some desert themed enemies.
Water areas are to guard her but the very dry areas are supposed to deter rescue.
Slime Princess
Fire themed enemies and rogue slimes
Harpy Princess
Dire Bat riders
Wind Elementals (Electricity?)
Beast Princesses in general
Dragon Princess's kitchen staff/cooks
Boy Princess
No idea for mooks yet.
However I have an idea for him
A pair of boss nemeses. You possibly encounter them post-rescue if his secret is out or as the 'true' bosses after fighting a decoy boss.
Mr. Venus and Mrs. Mars
A pair of classy and flamboyant assassins, one is a very convincing trap and the other is a very convincing reverse trap. They're out to eliminate Boy Princess on some mystery villain's orders.

Drew up an idea for what will serve as this gauntlet's boss. Working names include "The Consumed," "Stalking Husk," and "Boss."
The idea is that this is the end-result of Cordyceps infection, albeit from rapid onset. You have a towering mass of exoskeleton and fungus which attacks primarily with a clubbed hand but may disperse parasitic spores as well.
There could be groups of apian and fungi warriors attacking the boss to begin with, but they would be quickly dispatched by it.
Let me know if there are any issues with this design. I drew it before I actually looked at Gats' bee skin of Insect Princess, so I wasn't really sure of where to take it. This is a boss, so it can go through more variations if it has to.
I wonder if Gats still lurks here. Haven't seen much from him.

I still think making separate enemy types for every princess is not a good idea. Assuming we'd follow the pattern of three enemies for every type (weak enemy, strong enemy and elite/miniboss enemy), that would mean 60 enemies for gen 1 alone. Considering that there isn't that much interest in making enemies, it would take forever to make ones for every princess.
Since the princesses are supposed to be captured by the Dragon Princesses, I'd suggest making the DPs' minions the "generic" enemy type which appears in most if not all towers. Red/blue/green dragonspawn soldiers, or something. Additionally there could be some specific enemy types that would appear in certain towers, such as aquatic enemies in Fish Princess's tower and undead enemies in the undead princesses' towers.

Really, really like the hardtack and mourning cap redraws. Also, I thoroughly agree with you on Dark Souls. It's hardly hard, per se; I think that's often overstated by the zealous. I actually find it somewhat relaxing - perhaps it reminds me a little of classic Wizardry/Might and Magic in that regard.
About Bonemeal, since I don't think you got feedback there; IRL, it is one of the BEST sources of phosphates. One of the reasons that battlefields often become gardens is that bones (human or animal) create rich food for hungry roots.
I'd recommend it's 'default' use being restoring stamina/mana, with alternate uses as an alchemical ingredient for certain Knights/courtiers, and a 'gift' to increase the health, opinion, or lust of certain flora-based Princesses.
As for Mourning Cap, maybe have it's default property be a strong poison/antipoison property that can be refined via alchemy? Useful if one wants to get close and personal with more toxic acquaintances…
>>5424
The Inert Spore… Yeah, I'm thinking there are all sorts of ominously bad uses for this. Mimic Princess approves. Veilwart makes me think immediately of magic resistance/invisibility piercing powers, perhaps the ability to see magically 'cloaked' individuals.
Best looking is the lichen redesign, however. It looks like something I'd harvest, 10/10.
Are you open to suggestions?

Much obliged - I hope it helps, and if something doesn't work or needs tweaking, know I do not mind.
As for suggestions, since the style of drops seems very dark souls, different qualities of items seem appropriate; I'm thinking specifically of the moss dropped by treefolk in the Darkroot Garden.
Someone earlier here mentioned that Tower Guardian golems could be introduced based on a chess motif; I figure that could be an enemy common to most areas, and I remember seeing something similar done in a roguelike; I rather liked it.
Pawns dropping near-useless stone weapons/armour, Knights dropping stat-affecting alchemical items, Bishops dropping on-use magical components, Queens dropping high-end components for rare equipment resistant to or damaging to spawn of the towers, and Kings, perhaps, being very rare and dropping high-value components/gears OR very rare items used for the most risky and useful of ceremonies.
As the game goes on, perhaps the undead soldiers and arbalists are supplemented by Long-Dead Knights and Skeletal Apothecaries. Graven Nobles could serve as mini-boss style leaders of the pack, perhaps.
Similarly, I think the enemies for the 'Human' Gauntlet could be composed of Crown Rebels and the like; Highwaymen Apocalyptic Cultists, Scheming Barons, and Fallen Heroes at the top.
I have loads of ideas re: items and the like, but not only do I not want to overload with my own suggestions, I imagine this is a good starting place for them, as they are.
I'll finish with perhaps doing something different for the Orc Gauntlet; I feel that maybe *highly settled* Orcs are the enemies there, clad in exceptionally strong gear, wielding very formulaic book magic, etc. Keeps things interesting!

Here's an idea: a soda-themed alchemist who supplies cola, a mysterious, extremely limited and highly addictive substance which only he knows how to synthesize, to the world. He's not immediately aggressive, unless the player somehow threatens his empire (E.G. destroying/conquering a kingdom that provides him resources or buys a lot of soda) in which case he will send assassins—not necessarily the ones pictured—on the player.
Each different flavor of his cola gives different effects. For example root beer induces growth, lemon-lime grants temporary inhuman agility, blue rasberry induces an intense spiritual high, club soda just kills you, cream soda is believed to use an extreme concentrated extract of royal jelly etc.
Thoughts?

Those eyebrows are oddly compelling - I literally cannot look away. Moving right along - lore-wise, how would you fit such a source of sorcererous soda into the setting?
My immediate thought is - alchemy-as-soda is an interesting twist on the idea of potions as portable magic. It doesn't quite have that middle-fantasy feel, but there's a lot we have that's pushing the boundaries there. So, again - lore-wise, where would you see such an alchemist? What would integrate him into the setting?
Naturally, it'd make sugar a more valuable resource; perhaps valuable 'grades' of sugar, or simply the different refined varieties, could be a random drop or harvestable in various areas? More after I've had a good think on the matter, but does the image title imply you'd getafix from Carbonix, assuming you didn't aggravate him?

My original idea for his sodas and his business was that he is at first glance nothing more than a shady business mogul, but has deeper aspirations of world domination. His sodas would be represented in the lore as expensive gourmet potions with rare (and sometimes sinister) ingredients, available in high-end potion shops.
He himself would probably reside in an inland walled factory-fortress where his soda is made, surrounded by a village populated by his workers.
In "gameplay" he'd serve several unique purposes. Players could sell ingredients to him for a good amount of gold or potentially steal his recipes to make a profit.

Expensive gourmet potions… Excellent, kind of 'artisan' potions, reminds me of when you'd find a town with gear way above the normal quality, that you wouldn't (normally) have a way of affording until much, much later in the game. Naturally high-wealth kingdoms would have an easier time making use of his services, I'm sure.
Also, I like the fact you included the possibility of horrible amoral folk like myself who might try to, uh, liberate the recipes from this clear sugary-sweet dictator. Yes.
Having had a good think on things, I came up with some other ideas; some related to him and his followers, and another.
Carbonix:
- Are factions a thing? If so, this sounds like a perfect use for one. If faction opinion is high enough for example, the alchemist might set his 'Workshop' up in the player's kingdom. If it's low, price go up for the player and their servants/allies, and the Workshop sends carbonated killers their way.
- If the alchemist is slain, the bulk of his knowledge is lost, but the player can craft the lower-end stuff on their own?
- Things that could raise faction opinion might be giving rare ingredients away for free, and showing you have similar opinions on workers… I'm starting to get a feel of a robber-baron type who is 'generous' as to build a town for his workers, but the town is walled to keep them in, and there are moral considerations as well, of course…
But that's all musing, of course.
Enemy-wise, I realized we don't have a lot of human-types yet. Perhaps a faction of cultists, the 'Tower Builders' or something, who are obsessed with the Towers as a coming of something more..? I'll be able to throw more ideas as we are illuminate to the nature of the true threat - but I can easily see some flocking to the towers as a religious phenomena… Or, cast-offs from their kingdoms sensing blood in the water.

My personal favorite for his backstory is the mass sacrifice for his princess, making her queen. The ritual darkens her heart, and she stops caring about him. He's broken that he sacrificed everything for her, literally. So he's become a shadow of his former self. She uses him for her relief and he ultimately sires her daughters. His zealotry knows no bound and he will fight you to the death, allowing you to recruit him by one condition, having saved his daughters from their own fates of greed and wanton gluttony.
Considering his recruit bonus would be locked behind a three princess door, I'd think it'd be decently powerful.

Defeat Bonus: You are named a veteran knight, allowing you to recruit other knights and past heroes of the land.

Desc: A fallen general who seems hell-bent on defeating all who oppose him. Whatever his reasons, he is indefatigable in combat, and has countless years of bloodlust and conquest behind him. He will not fall easily.
Desc: One of the few surviving knights of the past tower quest, he seeks to test the metal of the current generation's knights.

Oh my God, After about a week of no reply, I started to scare I'd never get one. My apologies for my own tardiness in reply.
Anyways, personally, I think Cowardice is the best negative, rather than "harems". I really like the idea that the only way to recruit him would be to take all of his daughters, showing that they found happiness and that not all hope is lost for his own dragoness. However, I understand why you couldn't put such a restriction. With that in mind, you can see why I don't think "harem" exactly fits there.
>>6643
I'm concerned about the Mantle of the War Sage. Speciically about Train AND Fight. What if your kingdom is in a period of peace? It makes no sense to pick random fights. Likewise, if you're leading a campaign and are fighting constanty, you don't have time for training. A nitpick, but I'd think that "and" should be changed to "or".
I like the Relic of Redemption.
Oh! an interesting thought after rading the first description. Perhaps, as I think might have been suggested in the art thread, he comes to you after the first tower to challenge you if you save his daughter. And he challenges you after each tower if you dave his daughters. Part of his interest being to see if your worthy to have their hands.
Bloodshot Eye 10/25/15 (Sun) 21:04:12 990d86 No. 6652
>>6650 No apologies needed, but appreciated all the same. ^^
Technically, fighting is a more active form of training - like a hands-on experience - so, in a way, you don't have to worry too much about the former if you're nailing the latter. My idea was that the addition of "Train and" should give the more noblebright players room to assume constant sparring will keep them covered. What would "fight" entail? Little skirmishes? Full-blown battles? Harming someone? Drawing blood and potentially killing? Ultimately, it is all up for the players to interpret as they wish and play this towers game however they find most entertaining.
In hindsight… if you were aiming for a period of peace, pretty shady that you slayed an alignment-neutral guy for an item that has "War" in its name. Shady shadiness… but yeah, I did personally expect the mantle to make you go after fights same way Ancient Knight was constantly seeking a knight who could best him.
I gonna change that dislike tho'.
>he comes to you after the first tower to challenge you if you save his daughter. And he challenges you after each tower if you dave his daughters. Part of his interest being to see if your worthy to have their hands.
Interesting thoughts. My thoughts were that even if you don't sabe either of the DPs he'd show up after the events of Gen 3, as that was the icing on the cake to give you notoriety enough so even he has his curiosity ticked (assuming he's been "hunting" real legends all these years and someone who invades thrice the Grand Tower Kingdom and amass a number of wives/boons is the Legend minimum in his books)

speaking of dragons, I have some unposted stuff lying around, including some flavour text.
There was a "what kind of enemies would serve the Dragon Princessess" thing a while back, and I put them in a sort of caste system - DP is the master, and other creatures fall into a system of the more usefull the DP finds them, the higher up the ladder they are and the more likly they have a unique general as a middleman.
DP1 is the first dragon in Towergirls, and very, very, very hungry, who probably only cares about how tasty you are, so she wouldn't attract many followers by 1. being the first boss and 2. eating everyone. So I gave her a standard Dragon entourage of Kobolds and Cultists, who look a little like Team Magma.
The Kobolds would probably have been dragged into this situation, honestly. They likly have a pact with the Dragon Queen, so when DP1 showed up they were basically forced into serving her over their own Princess. At least their master chef is able to keep them off the firing line and make sure the captured princessess are well fed under a "we're just readying them for the sacrafice" excuse they made up on the spot when they were caught serving the captured Princessess a vast abundance of masterwork food.
Meanwhile, the Human cultists are people who are destined for gruntwork. They think that if they worship the hungry dragon enough, mostly by throwing enough food and gold into DP1's room, she'll eventually not go and burn the farms down looking for more food. They probably carry the gold to places where DP1 can't eat it if they need to buy anything for the Kitchens, or possibly send it home to Mom, and unpopular cultists will find themselves drawing lots to go and serve DP1 food, because the Kobolds are too smart to go anywhere near her when she's hungry. Unfortuantly, this means they are dumb enough to believe the Kobolds are readying the captured Princessess to be fed to DP1. And dumb enough to tell DP1 this, and in fact tell basically everyone who would listen. Nice going, boys, your the entire reason a small army of knights showed up.
