an hour ago I woke up to horses right at my face, then I found the sheriff who said he was looking for them and they were on the run, and my neighbor comes out with a rope to lasso them but ultimately contributed nothing and I'm still trying to make out the difference between a dream and what just happened.

they ran off by themselves and are back home now.

if I ever see them again I'm going to try and ride one.

You said "you"

I didn't wanna say "if by you you mean the horses" because that just looks weird and you can only really get away with that when speaking.

People do this a lot in English. If you're speaking of someone and they reply, they'll say "me" instead of "you" because otherwise it'd sound weird af.
