I was one of the people excited for it because staff-wise, it was perfect: finally, the Shinbo mahou shoujo we had been waiting for, with designs by Ume-sensei, music by Kajiura Yuki, and written by the famous Urobuchi Gen. It even had the guys responsible for the fucking weird Zetsubou-sensei OPs doing the crazy enemy shit! Chiwa Saito and Nonaka Ai were even in it, there's no way it could be anything other than the Lilycure Go! Go! anime that we were waiting so long for!
And then Mami lost her head. I distinctly remember it, my bro texting me while I was away from my computer, telling me that drills had just died, and my confused insistence that they'll asspull her back into the show, there's no way they'd actually kill someone three episodes in.
Then Homura's episode aired and a few hours later, thousands of Japs were dead, multiple towns were wiped off the map, and a fucking nuclear plant had a meltdown, and we all knew the world would never be the same.

I was on 4/a/ at the time and the board exploded in hype after Mami was killed. 4/u/ probably broke two posts an hour in the same thread. I was staying up for days at a time, subsisting on Red Bull and instant ramen. It was thread after thread of theories and decoding runes.
I remember on episode 11 there was heated discussion over Homura describing herself as a creep. It opened up the possibility that Homura's feelings for Madoka were romantic, rather than platonic and this was aknowledged in canon. I don't have the TV rips with the gg or was it CoalGuys? subs anymore, the screenshots are of the later releases by Tri4 and Fancutfags.
