If anyone is interested, I made an e-book out of this, as I couldn't find a digital copy and happened to own it, and someone requested. It's not perfect, but it's 'complete', any future/improved versions will be in >>>/pdfs/906

If you have any feedback, find anything missing or out of order, let me know there or here, and I'll polish it up into a better final version. (I know a few images and the entire timeline in the appendix is fucked, new version will be in above thread).

I'm not sure who the money goes to, as the author passed 10 years ago, but for my own comfort here's a link to buy the actual book, and/or copies of his zine: http://www.infiltration.org/aaa-paypal.html

If there is an extreme amount of interest, I may purchase and digitize the zines in that link too.

Some RurEx and a question for board owner

I live right by a place with no name, where a bunch of people are basically living in sheds. There is part of it/near it that I have named the "Trash Maze". You walk into the woods a ways, following small foot worn trails, and you start seeing trash everywhere. Stuff like busted kids' toys, broken vacuum cleaners, the further you go in you start seeing evidence of small campfires, and useless things purposely strung up in the branches of trees. One tree has a bunch of coathangers all on one limb, an a mirror, and a bunch of cooking utensils, and a busted oven on the ground below it. You keep walking and you see CDs and bags hung up in trees and there is a spot with an open suitcase, with clothes pouring out of it and strewn all over the place, like someone stole it and then ransacked it for fun. there's a half-busted umbrella perched on a little chair surrounded by batteries and broken CD players, all kinds of stuff, all separated out by little footpaths. every group of trees/bushes is its own little scene of artfully arranged garbage that you cant see from far away, you can only see it if you get into the bushes. basically it looks like a bunch of goblins tried to build a village out of broken stuff they stole.

pic is from around that area, but i took that pic years ago before i had found the actual trash maze, which i've yet to get pics of. I may have taken some video though, I'll check my files later.

question for board owner: would you like to cross link with >>>/poverty/ to bring us both traffic?

Gear

Let's talk about the gear we bring with us on explorations.

Usually I bring:
Maglite
Paracord
3M half mask respirator
P100 filters
Glowsticks
Chalk
Mechanix m-pact gloves
Hiking boots
Pack of cigarettes
Water

And I have it all tucked nicely in my MOLLE assault pack.

What do you bring?

Urbex can be dangerous

Yet again, we find ourselves with a reminder that Urbex is a dangerous activity. At the same time, these guys did it right. They called for help when someone was injured, and they're complying with police. Hopefully the DA doesn't try to throw the book at them.

South eugene exploration

Hey /urbex/, I live in South Eugene in Oregon and I was wondering if anyone knew of any shit around the area? I'm within walking distance of the University and I dont much mind trekking long distances if it means getting something good, I could get a bike but I'm not licensed to drive at the moment, so if anyone knows of anything within long walking/biking distance of the university, that'd be appreciated

R: 5 / I: 1 / P: 2
Ever been in a dangerous situation?

One time a friend and I went on the roof of a 5 story building. We were walking around when we saw some writing on the roofing liner, big circles with "DO NOT STEP" in them. Figured it was either a building engineer or a kind urbexer pointing out roof sag.

It was only until we explored the inside of the building a bit more that we noticed a huge collapse in the corner of the building. Every floor from the first to the roof was sitting in a big pile of debris, about 50ft x 50 ft. We very easily could've fallen through the roof because there was nothing supporting it below in that corner of the building.

Has anyone here ever scoped out the abandoned Cincinnati subway system? It runs all through the town, but was never finished, so the entire thing is empty.

new here, said I'd share a story I like to call The Worst Idea Ever

>working as photographer in nightclub

>leave work one night, after having more than a few drinks (free pints on the job)
>walk past post office
>rear gate is open
>decide to go in and take pictures
>go round a corner, next to the employee bathrooms there's this big telecoms tower
>hear someone go into the bathroom
>hide behind a corner
>after I'm sure he's gone I decide it's time to leave
>walk out towards gate
>it's locked
>fuck
>attempt to shimmy up a telephone poll next to a wall and hop in to an alley behing the building
>this proves harder than anticipated
>fall 7ft to the ground, land on my left hip
>camera bag is on my right side, no damage
>call my friend
>he knocks on front widow, security guard comes to let me out.
>fucked up for the next two days, muscle aches

The pictures I got fucking sucked. Deserved it though.

Have any of you Urbexed a factory before? Preferably while still running. A couple of friends and I scouted the area around one in the town we live in. We're curious in it due to the fact that there might be some interesting information about whatever the fuck in there. On the edge of the perimeter there is a building for telelcommunications, I'm interested in that. Outside the tele building there is a cabinet with a huge lock on it, and next to it is a big box that is apparently filled with rat poison, but the cob webs on it indicate it hasn't been touched for months. The factory itself is very large, frequently you can see workers entereing and exiting, and cars going through. In the twenty minutes we were there about ten cars left, also a train goes through, and whenever I get near the factory it's usually stationed. accross the street from the tele building is the cities packaging company, around the telecommunications is a fence with barbed wire, and inside the fence are many large busses and vans. I can get pictures Monday one of my friends has a pretty good camera and we can get good shots of the area if anyone's interested.

Pic related it's the map of the area

Hey Guis,

I want to share some Photos, I made 2008 with a friend of mine. Location is Heidelberg, Germany and the building is a hotel built in the early 1900s. I heard that Marylin Monroe and even JFK were visiting it in the 1920s since the hotel was the most expensive in the city.

Anyway it's funny because it was years before I first heard about urban exploring. Definitely a great experience. Enjoy~
R: 1 / I: 0 / P: 4

Legalities

Let's have a discussion on possible legal consequences for urban exploration.

In my state (Illinois), there needs to be a trespassing sign at an entrance or inside the land in order for it to count as criminal trespassing. There could also be a public notice published in a newspaper, or purple markers on trees for large properties. Providing notice that trespassing is not allowed means that it's easy to prove intent (tort) that someone is on the property unlawfully. However in some places it's up to the individual to know property lines and where they are at all times!

In my state criminal trespass to land is a class B misdemeanor which means up to $1500 fine and/or 180 days in jail. Other class B misdemeanors include littering, window peeking, telephone harassment, speeding over 30 mph, and computer tampering.

I was picked up by the cops in Michigan one time and I overheard the cops take a few things came into consideration. First, the public trespassing notice expired and there was no sign on the building. Also I didn't break anything in order to get into the building as a window had already been open for my entry. I was also able to convince them that I wasn't there to steal anything, something they at first suspected, which could constitute a felony of burglary. And if I was carrying tools that could be deemed burglary tools I think I'd be pretty screwed because that constitutes intent to commit a crime. In my research I found that Michigan laws are a little different in that they need to prove that entry is not "open to the public" or that entry was expressly denied somehow. They didn't know what to charge me with and told me to meet with a detective who also gave up on the case and told me to go home.

Now if I were to say, break a fence and get caught in the process, I may also get charged with destruction of property, a class A misdemeanor, but I can't really say for sure. Most states require that there's intent to commit a crime inside which would fall under burglary, but otherwise regular trespassing and tampering with an entrance seems to be separate acts (and not as harsh a penalty).

At any rate, I would recommend researching your local laws. Basically I figured out that I won't get in trouble for entering buildings without trespassing signs, doubly so if it seems "open to the public". I also found a neat loophole I might exploit in the future (pic related). Officer, I was simply entering this abandoned building to beautify it! Oh and of course if you're caught, either do not admit wrongdoing or simply don't talk to the police. I would recommend bullshitting to the extreme and playing innocent. Repeat after me: "I didn't think my entry was unlawful". Don't make the cops' jobs easy by handing them intent on a silver platter!

How to into /urbex/: Newfag edition

Sup /urbex/,

I noticed that there doesn't seem to be any stickies on this board that there tends to be for noobs like myself, so I thought I'd just post a thread on this.

The idea of urban exploration sounds very intriguing to me. It would have been even better to explore the oceans back in the days or explore space in the future, but we happen to be caught in the middle and I can only explore dank memes for so long before I start to feel like I should go outside.

So for the prospective urban explorer, is there anything I need to know? Safety is obviously an issue, and I don't know if there is certain gear or skills you guys use frequently. This is also probably a question I need to answer for myself, but how does one find places to explore? If any of you go to sewers or storm drains frequently, I definitely want to hear about that shit in particular.

It's cold as hell outside but we said fuck it and went to this giant abandoned apartment complex. The ghetto

This week we went to the south side ghetto. Our original planned site was sadly under demolition when we got there, so we found some alternatives. I live just north of Flint, so with the recession of '08 and the almost total flight of the Auto industry that means that there are piles of abandoned buildings, you could potentially go an entire block without seeing a single inhabited structure. Downside is that Flint is one of the most crime-ridden cities in the U.S. and if I were to go crawling around I'd probably end up either shot or stabbed for my shoes.

I just want to indulge my inner Stalker.

Exploration Tips

So I live right by this place, I drive by it on the way home from class three days a week. It's haunted me from the moment I saw it and I would love to get inside, but the biggest problem (besides the rampant asbestos) is the fact that it's situated directly next to some kind of police/state trooper headquarters.

So what would be the best way to get in there, if it's possible at all? I've been thinking on it for years at this point.

Urban exploration protips

What are your personal tips for a fellow explorer?

I have a few:

- When trying to find potential exploration sites, use https://www.flickr.com/map and search for keywords like urbex and abandoned. Lots of pictures are geotagged!

- Rusty nails and other sharp objects will ruin your day. Best to wear thick boots and jeans.

- I always try to inconspicuously scout a location first. Google maps satellite to look for fences, potential entryways, etc so I can plan where to park and where exactly to go to get in. Googling the site may give you comments on websites from other people who have been there before.

- Going during the night time sucks because of visibility, and because flashlights are easy to spot by cops. You can use a red filter on a flashlight if you really want to, but I suggest always going out in the very early AM or in the middle of the day when everyone's at work. Or, if it's a construction site, on a weekend.

Rurex? Yeah, Rurex, whatever.

So in this thread, I wanted to chat a bit more about rural exploration. I grew up in Joshua, Texas and there's just really not a whole lot of exploring options when it comes to the more urban areas of the town, plus I lived way a bit out in the country, so exploring the countryside was mostly all I could do with friends.

Anyways, I was just wondering what the kind folk at /urbex/ ever found exploring the countryside.

My friend and I used to go out quite a bit at night, usually on Friday or Saturday, since we did it most when we were schoolkids and we call it George Johnning. Basically its the "aliases" that we would use if we ever got caught by anyone. I would be John Abraham and he would be George Lincoln. Not the greatest, but we never got caught, so it's not an issue. Anyways, many of the houses out in the rural areas are cheap mobile homes, the type that are hauled to the countryside in halves on two separate trucks, but fortunately for the curious, many of these homes were abandoned. It was easy to tell which houses were and weren't occupied though. Most unused houses didn't have cars parked in front of them or just never had lights on, so we would patrol the area a few times before we entered, just to make sure. Breaking in is usually pretty easy. The houses sit on land acres from neighboring houses, and a few of them were old enough that the glass or doors had already been busted open by previous intruders.

I always just found it interesting to go from house to house and see the remnants of what was there. A lot of them still had tons of furniture and belongings. Food rotting in the fridge, computers and monitors strewn about rooms, clothes and beds up-heaved. It was neat stuff. One time in particular, we went to a house not too far away from my friends. A little bit risky as it was so close, but we never got caught for anything, so it's all good. We got into the house pretty easily, the back door was unlocked, but it looked like most of everything was left intact. The house was messy, but it didn't smell bad, at least. The back door opened directly into the living room area. There was an old corner couch, the kind that fits snugly into a corner, obviously. There was a pretty nice coffee table with a glass top in between the couches, and it had a lot of random shit on it. Lighters, ash tray, etc. Opposite of the couch was a small table completely covered about a foot high with Maxim magazines, and a few of them were spilled on the floor. There was a hallway beyond that, leading to a room filled with random computer parts, and a really large magnifying glass on a stand. There was an old CRT monitor on a desk and random shit on the desk, but I don't remember what exactly the PC parts were, I wasn't really into computers at the time. On the opposite side of the house was a bedroom, which I'm guessing would be the master bedroom. These houses aren't too terribly big, so they don't have a lot of rooms to begin with. The bedroom was kinda small. It had a old, stained mattress without any sheets, a few clothes scattered here and there, and a nightstand with a can of black paint in the drawer. My friend and I opened the closet in the bedroom and found a few more interesting things. There was an acoustic guitar with a few strings missing, a gas-mask without a filter, a full carton of .22 LR rounds, a few chisels, a hammer, and an old army helmet. I think that my friend still has the guitar and the bullets, but all I remember after we found them was that my friend frantically looked all through the house for a gun, and in hindsight, it was amusing.

I might update this thread with more findings and stories later on, I'm sorta tired and I made this on a whim. And this board looks somewhat slow, no offense, but it may give me ample time to go out with my friend again sometime and take some pictures of different places.

Hey, I am getting started in urbex. I have scouted a few places that I think would be great to explore, but I have no clue what to take with me. What do you recommend for a small little trip.

(PS, it is an old amusement park, pic from chernobyl)
