So he's not a name you hear much in these parts, and he wrote before Hegel or Marx came on the scene, but he's credited with stirring up the French Revolution (ideologically, not intentionally) and his political philosophy is remarkably comparable, in its end goals, to Marx et al (http://www.cambridge.org/gb/academic/subjects/philosophy/philosophy-general-interest/general-will-rousseau-marx-communism)

So, any other Rousseau fans out there?

Oh now I remember him. I learned about him in social studies years ago.

28834d No.112

He was a good guy, inventing this whole idea with the state having to compensate you for the freedoms it took away from you with other priviledges in order to be legitimate, but otherwise he was a little bit too individualist for my tastes.

For a proto-socialist he was pretty dank though.

a28f18 No.160

It is interesting to compare him with other classical thinkers in the same era. Locke viewed that man is naturally good, and society must be derived from his state of nature. Hobbes viewed that man is naturally evil, and society is established in order to contain this evil. Rousseau viewed that man is naturally good, and society is necessary evil. Kant viewed that man is naturally neither good nor evil, it is hopeless to talk about society in relation to nature.

Are any of these truly examples of Communism? Are some examples of Communism, but not others? Or are they all just different types of Communism?

Well neither the USSR nor the PRC could be considered socialist, since it's the party that controls the means of production, not the workers. There hasn't really been many truly socialist countries. Tito's Yugoslavia would probably be considered as one of them. Most of these countries either have state capitalism or outright fascism in the case of best korea.

208340 No.170

Communism is not possible until socialism has become the dominant social system globally, socialism has occurred(briefly) in various places(USSR for a short time, the paris commune, spain for a single summer)

Not necessarily. All it needs is for those socialist systems to be many and big enough to be able to supply themselves/each other.
Otherwise the bourgeoisie are going to do everything in their power to destroy it.

What makes you disagree?

Also it's not that it will necessarily last forever like that or that it means we should avoid socialism or something. I just think that kind of stage is somewhat likely before full communism. Seems better than capitalism either way though. Even though I agree with what it says,I still support Bolshevism, the Soviet Union, Stalin, etc. because they were moving in the right direction towards communism.

27fff2 No.161

>>155
20th century communism is a total failure. They couldn't get everything right. The central planning was too abstract because they're totally oblivious to those problems. The planned economy system didn't work, couldn't adapt, didn't have quality control, didn't have quota control, bureaucratic intervention, etc. Because the whole system failed, The lower goons had to improvise all the time, but because of the politburo's obliviousness, it was for vain (see Kantorovich's dismissal). It was 'orderly' for the politburo, chaos for others.

I'm not implying that neoclassical 'bourgeois' economy works, because it doesn't. This is the second problem for us, for twenty-first century communists.

Why do right-wingers always believe that Marx thought that all workers should have equal pay for unequal work? He clearly states in 'critique of the gotha programme' that this is not the case.

"But one man is superior to another physically, or mentally, and supplies more labor in the same time, or can labor for a longer time; and labor, to serve as a measure, must be defined by its duration or intensity, otherwise it ceases to be a standard of measurement. This equal right is an unequal right for unequal labor. It recognizes no class differences, because everyone is only a worker like everyone else; but it tacitly recognizes unequal individual endowment, and thus productive capacity, as a natural privilege. It is, therefore, a right of inequality, in its content, like every right. Right, by its very nature, can consist only in the application of an equal standard; but unequal individuals (and they would not be different individuals if they were not unequal) are measurable only by an equal standard insofar as they are brought under an equal point of view, are taken from one definite side only – for instance, in the present case, are regarded only as workers and nothing more is seen in them, everything else being ignored. Further, one worker is married, another is not; one has more children than another, and so on and so forth. Thus, with an equal performance of labor, and hence an equal in the social consumption fund, one will in fact receive more than another, one will be richer than another, and so on. To avoid all these defects, right, instead of being equal, would have to be unequal.

But these defects are inevitable in the first phase of communist society as it is when it has just emerged after prolonged birth pangs from capitalist society. Right can never be higher than the economic structure of society and its cultural development conditioned thereby"

Sometimes, I get the feeling that many libertarians and conservatives would like Marx if they actually just read what he had to say, unlike what /pol/ thinks he had to say.

Post things that debunk general widespread misconceptions in this thread!
