So after going through a couple of wormholes and almost draining my ships battery, I managed to find Earth. I plopped down a colony on Titan to keep other empires from claiming the system


I'm guessing those threads don't last as long? Because the last Spore thread here managed to stay up about a month.


I'm not disputing that it was a huge disappointment, but the creature and vehicle creation tools are pretty decent at least. Anyway, this thread is more about sharing your creations and the deepest lore behind them anyway.

Spore would have been a lot better if it was more focused. I know a lot of people were hyped for a a more fleshed out creature and civilization stage, but I feel that the ideal spore would have scrapped these in favour of a really in depth space stage. A decent space strategy / exploration game with the creation system would have been great. If they still wanted to have the evolution element of the game, this should have been represented by the ability to more deeply interact with changing alien worlds in the space stage.

Lack of focus seems to be the games main issue, other than how shallow the game ended up being. Having the occasional Galactic Adventures type mission would be nice, especially without the limitations placed on you by the current editor.

Not really. Most of the Spore content I know of other than the game itself are youtube videos showing off adventures someone had made, and SporeWiki's fiction universe autism. Pretty sure one of the factions ended up being Battlestar Galactica/Star Wars but with dinosaurs. Honestly, it's a daunting task trying to figure out what parts of that to read first.

Try installing it in this order:

If you're running the retail version, you'll have to activate the disc keys on Origin if you want to be able to access online features anymore.

Here is a trick I learned from another creator. Trigger random explosions by using creatures to blow up respawning explosive barrels behind the scenery. This is when you need to cook off explosions for a scene like a reactor explosion or giant battle, but need the effects more than once. You can get the creatures to attack these barrels specifically by holding the crtl key, and clicking the behavior options for the creature to open the custom behaviors.

And that's the issue with smaller open-source projects, progress is glacial until something sparks significant interest in it. Unless some big e-celeb gets the word out, or EA releases the source code to Spore- the options for large scale evolution games are rather limited

While EA should rightfully take blame for the shitty DRM of the retail release, and likely placed undue demands on Will and his team- Will Wright himself took responsibility for the simplistic gameplay and the move toward the "cute" aesthetic.


Literally all that can be done now is either forget the game, or remember what potential it had and attempt to salvage something worthwhile from the ashes of EA's second major failure after Ultima 9. I highly doubt EA has more than a few cents too gain from shilling a decade-old game remembered mostly for its failures than rather than the one redeeming feature.

Until Thrive is finished, or some other studio does the concept better- Spore is the only game we've got that let's you make shitty custom aliens.

Of course it'll never be finished, it's such a small project right now that barely anyone actually contributes. The difference between it and a closed source commercial game is that it can be salvaged years after development dies, since the code is already online.

The last update was back in 2017, Thrive understandably has a rather slow release schedule - given it's likely a side project of a side project. There is some gameplay with the cell stage though, but it's mostly prototype-tier.
