Post drop offs.

It's fair to assume that the first and easiest achievement can be used as a bench mark for players who actually played the game. And yet I'm still horrified.

>Dark Souls

>69.4% if players got to the first bonfire

>5% less total players got an estus after that point

>Then an additional 5% made it past the god damn tutorial boss

>Civs 5

>88.6% of players find a ruin

>6% less players ever produced a second city

It gets worse. Only about 25% of people beat the game on Chieften.

Post your favourite game, or find the most embarrassing drop offs out there.

ada1b4  No.15830442

Doesn't this happen because people just keep on buying games on sale and never play them? Otherwise I don't know how to explain those stats.

642735  No.15830461

dark souls is no longer easily purchased, so really you should post stats for the dark souls remastered and take account you should factor in people who have played the game;

I already played dark souls on ps3, played a bit on pc but now I got around to beating the game on pc

83630b  No.15830471

>>15830442

That's why you only go from the first, and arguably easiest, achievement. Even if the first achievement represents 100% of the people who played it, its laughable to see a 5% drop in people beating the first hour of gameplay.

Never realized leaving Doc Mitchell's house was its own quest, but 8 percent never even got far enough to do it. Almost 50 percent of the people that even left the character creation didn't even make it to Benny in Vegas, either. Not sure how more people found Benny than got a companion when Boone, Ed-e, Veronica are all on the beaten path to Vegas.

They Went That-a-Way doesn't end with meeting Benny, it ends when you meet the Khans in Boulder City, Ring-a-Ding-Ding ends when you leave the casino after meeting Benny. That the former has 47% achievement rate while the latter only has 38.6% means that almost 20% of the people who made it to Boulder City never got to meet Benny, which is interesting considering how once you've made it to Boulder City the Strip is only a short while away.

The huge drop-off after Ain't that a Kick in the Head is likely people who installed the game, tried it out for a bit, maybe got gored by a deathclaw at the quarry and then stopped playing and forgot about the game.

I find it a little funny that some of these achievements are hints at how you should go about beating the game, but the majority pays no attention to it. >And what about people who don't link their games to glorified Facebook-for-gamers DRM platforms?

You can compare Steam achievement dropoffs to similar dropoffs for console achievements, or GOG achievements. The next step would be to argue that real, hardcore gamers who seek out pure self-defined challenge wouldn't be caught dead using any of the above platforms, but at that point you're describing such a small margin of people that it's essentially the same as the 0.3% of players who get the rarest achievements anyway.

Again, completely missing the point, achievement dropoffs aren't happening because Steam users autistically hunt specific achievements. For any of the games in the thread you can see that the achievements listed are for playing the game the same way everybody else does. Check it for yourself, GOG's dropoffs will be just as severe, caring about achievements has nothing to do with it.

From my observation, this is what happens when you have a large or prominent video making community e.g the style and combo videos.

Quake has the same or bigger problem where a lot of people will rep Quake 3 Arena because of frag movies, but they can't distinguish between VQ3 and CPMA, and will perceive gameplay as just +fwd +jump, and flicking shots (which then works out terribly for them to whine that they lost 0:30 and complain about veterancy somewhere on the internet).

In New Vegas, cheating or even opening the console disables achievements. It's the same for many other games too so it's not as bad as many people think. Still pretty bad tho

It's pretty funny that every single boss culls a large chunk of the playerbase but you still have 16% of them clearing the huge difficulty spike right at the end.

Cheevos where created for datamining. When an AAA dev sees only 30% of the normalcattle who bought the game actually completed it decides to make the next game shorter and use the saved money to pay more shills.

So yes, they are cancer.

Both these can be so easily avoided it's so dumb, one of the platforms should introduce a proper standard where online achievements are separate from offline ones at the very least.

Achievements are a bad way of keeping metrics, the margin of error is way to high. On steam mods disable achievements, it doesn't factor in second play throughs on different platforms, and I have several games on my trophy list that someone brought over to play split-screen and took back, leaving me with 0 or just 1 trophy.

Some games don't record achievemnts whilst offline. Due to some housing nonsense a bit earlier in my life I could only get internet access on my desktop for brief periods of time, so for some games I only got the achievement for beating the last mission/boss or whatever because I saved it to beat it online. On some games I have the first few acheivements despite completing it. There are also some games in which I have more than half of the achievements, but no or few recorded hours.

As for Darksouls, I only have the first three because soon after playing it the remaster was announced and I decided to hold off on playing it. As it turns out the remaster was trash, so I'll have to redownload and patch the original.

The situation that I described likely doesn't apply to most of the players (or nonplayers) that you're discussing.

If you have the game on steam but never installed it would you count in these statistics?

Maybe a lot of this is unwanted gifts or morons who buy games and never play them (like me sometimes).

yeah I was going to say this. Even accidentally hitting ~ and then closing it still disables all achievements until you quit and restart the game. And playing FO3 or FONV on the PC (modded or not) without fixing some shit in the console every few minutes is nearly impossible.

Dark souls is a bad indicator for this because originally even on steam the achievements were on games for windows live, so anybody that played the game then, then stopped after the servers moved to steam will show up as owning the game, but having accomplished nothing.

People have always not finished games. It's not just a modern thing. The crude metrics from trophy/achievement data showed that something like only 40% or less of players actually finished the game.

Interestingly enough before more precise metrics showed up in most games (if the game has an online component or some sort or calls home then I am willing to bet it collects data on it's players) the trophies were used to drive game dev. For example, Assassin's Creed II had an unusually high completion rate but not everyone 100% it. Come post Brotherhood the game devs realized the vast majority of the players never did the glyph challenges so they stopped making them. When the devs started the mission ranking feedback system in 4 they found out that people FUCKING HATED the tailing missions (in the game with the most in the series) and that's why AssCreed Rogue doesn't have a single one.

Now devs have gone from trying to make their games better, more accessible, or more tailor made to their audience to gathering data and trying to make games as a service and pump as much extra money out of their customers as possible. This also means they need to appeal to as many people as possible. This is why every game released now has a crafting system, a leveling up system, loot, black-and-white morality, logbooks, lore, etc. etc. etc.

I'm guilty of this a lot of the time actually. I end up playing a game for a few hours then end up not playing for a few days and when I come back just end up playing other things. I always add them to the backlog though. Someday I will return..
