EVEN IF NISA HAS THE RIGHTS TO CS3, THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN SLEEP! KEEP FIGHTING! DON'T GIVE IN!

>Latest News

- News of the future of Trails series and footage of Ys IX to drop on the 24th of March according to news outlets

-On January 17th, 2019 NISA formally announced they had acquired the rights to the Trails series (and likely has had them for some time) and would be releasing Cold Steel 3 in fall of 2019 for the PS4 (no other platforms have been announced so far). In an attempt of damage control it was announced Brittany "Hatsuu" Avery, Ryan Thompson and Kris Kniggev (all veterans of XSeed's work on the CS series) had been contracted to work on the game to ensure script accuracy, do translation work and, in Hatsuu's case, manage the VAs and dub (Sean Chiplock has already been confirmed as returning as Rean). This is probably been the biggest fear of the Falcom General for a while and it's here now. NISA's play here is pretty smart and a good portion of the initial outrage was quelled by these staff announcements. For now the best course of action will be to gather information and watch NISA very closely for when they release content from the translation (like screenshots or trailers). Collecting info from NISA's past deeds is also a good plan, but keep in mind it will be difficult to make much headway with that alone until we can show they're fucking up this translation too thanks to their insulation via the stunt hires. Being attentive and vigilant is your best course of action here.

-Ys IX: Monstrum Nox was revealed. It is the furthest game in the Ys timeline and will release in fall of 2019.

-Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2 on PS4 were delayed and will release in March and May of 2019, respectively. For the first time the games will have dual audio, though the dub will feature the extra lines recorded for the PC versions. It will also feature the "turbo mode" feature added to the PC versions.

-The PC versions of Cold Steel 1 and 2 had dual audio patched in, so as long as you are able to update your game an undub is no longer necessary if you want to play it with Japanese audio. Also some new English lines were added to CS1 with the patch.

-On the same day, October 26th, both Tom Lipschultz and Brittany "Hatsuu" Avery left XSeed. Hatsuu has since gone freelance and was hired by NISA to work on Cold Steel 3.

- As of this posting Trails of Cold Steel 4 has been out for numerous months in Japan, so obviously the whole game is spoiled. Try to keep things behind spoilertext here.

- The Switch port of Ys VIII released with a litany of bugs, including not even having dual audio (NISA's sole claim to fame) at launch.

- After an email campaign, a retranslation, apologies, and 7 months of delays, Ys 8 finally got released on PC. And NISA fucked up, the port is so terrible that only 51% of the Steam reviews being positive (it was originally at 25%, but shills will shill). Western and Japanese websites are reporting this story. In other words, a huge backlash. Meanwhile, NISA promised to fix everything. Don't worry, they'll probably be able to fix in a few weeks what they couldn't fix in 1.5 years. Absolutely. Ha.

- Tokyo Xanadu released on PS4/PC with an improved translation, but there are a few issues like slangs, memes and random chtulhu lines.

- Also available on PC: the Trails in the Sky trilogy (now with Turbo mode), Xanadu Next, Ys: I & II Chronicles, Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, Ys Origin, Ys SEVEN, Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2, Zwei!! 1 and 2

>Fan-translations

>Trails from Zero at 80%+ (being edited by Geofront/Zerk). There is already a beta (as in a rough translation done before Zerk even started working on it) out, though the quality is on the low side, though still coherent from start to finish

>Trails to Azure was leaked. There are a few typos and every once in a while there's an awkward line or two but all in all it's a solid translation. https://www.romhacking.net/translations/3679/. Flame's edit of the translation is also out officially now. It's a better worded script at the cost of pretty much breaking the voice mod. Both are available packaged with torrents if you care to look for them.

>Everything else in the works seems to be MIA.

the nisa takeover seems like a good stopping point in dropping the trails series for me. loved trails in the sky 1 and 2, and 3 is great if you can't get enough which i couldn't. disliked the cold steel cast due to it being almost all kids in school and of course the main cock sucker gets a special power because why not. then he gets a harem of girls because it needs a more weeb selling points. thank god for dragon quest.

Understandable, but what about Crossbell? I still see people who love that shit to death in the recent threads, and they're unpozzed at least with the current iteration of translation with still a very meaty story.

That Trails chart can use a good update. The rant about the Crossbell games is off. I just played through both games, the patch for Zero is fine even in its unfinished state. Ao is more of a mixed bag. The original leak becomes google translate-tier at times, the Flame edit is good but it breaks the flow of the voices from the EVO voice patch. Both games are still worth playing even in that state though. They're fantastic.

If it's like other dungeon crawlers I've played it will be be piss easy to play in japanese without knowing nip, you just need a tablet or smartphone with a translation app and a japanese wiki for the game.

>Also, never heard of Rinne but it looks interesting, like it almost plays like a WRPG.

It's a pseudo-soft reboot of this rpg/action game series called Relics. Falcom handled the mobile ports for the original devs and then when the devs went tits up they sold the rights to falcom who ended up making Rinne with a few of the original series dev team. The whole Relics series is weird as hell think Alien meats SMT in terms of themes.

Pretty sure Pom is just a Puyo Puyo clone for the most part. I really liked the "retro" versions of the OST they play during Pom, the retro Ouroboros theme when you play against Campanella was cool.

XSEED is a tiny company. They flat-out do not have much money or people. For what its worth though, their games generally sell respectably save for the really niche titles like Zwei.

its not like they can just magically have more money, and the Senran censorship definitely did not help their financials.

Merchandise is a whole different pain on its own.

There's nothing XSEED really could've done, it came down to NISA having more money, Falcom's president having a relationship with NIS/A's, and NISA offering a french localization. XSEED has no way to change any of that, and Kondo valued their loyalty, quality and very positive reception of their releases less than what he saw in NIS/A and that's the facts.

It makes me want to just give up on Falcom entirely, fuck them.

Was sorta undecided on the ending since i feel like if you got the power to make your nation strong as fuck you take it, but i get its a game. Also seeing as the ending scenes werent translated i take it that it shows crossbell being taken by the erebonians? What an adventure though, ill be looking forward to replaying this.

I played the PC version that they had on Nyaa, which translated the ending scenes. They pretty much summarize the events you see in the end of CS2. They explain the Erebonian civil war ends, Osborne "recovers" from his assassination attempt, and Crossbell is occupied by the empire. So by the end of CS2 the events of the Crossbell games and CS are completely lined up, now we wait for CS3 to see what happens next. And we also have to pray that CS3 is at least fucking playable.

Are these things just expensive, or was Fate Extella not that graphically demanding, or do these lazy fucks just not give a shit? And if it's the last one how is Falcom sitting around on its ass letting this go further?

>contract obligations

Unless contract obligations are differently handled in Japan (they might be), they don't really have to honor it considering NIS/A's piss-poor performance and disastrous releases and handlings of the game. Something like that would be a legitimate reason to break the contract.

>>16153292

It depends. PC Porting is cheaper than porting games to other consoles, or porting a PC-native game to a console, but yeah porting is generally fairly expensive.

It doesn't help that they also didn't give a shit though.

>how is Falcom sitting around on its ass letting this go further

They don't fucking care about us. They demonstrated this with Ys VIII, and even if you gave them the benefit of the doubt for that game assuming they didn't know NIS/A's reputation in the west, now they have certainly no excuse.

>Are decent porting companies that expensive?

Honestly, it's not that XSeed is more expensive because their quality is better, they're more expensive because they're a small company and that's the cheapest they can afford to be. Companies don't get more expensive based on the quality of their work when it comes to localization. That's an incidental aspect. NISA, who has more money thanks to their parent company, can afford to underbid. Japanese companies largely don't give a shit about the quality of localizations as long as they still get their payday in the end. Ys 8 was able to make a decent profit due to being spread across four platforms and most consumers being way too easy to please, so in the end even the controversy didn't matter, which Kondo more or less said at the shareholder meeting. Now, the Trails fanbase is considerably more autistic, rabid and numerous than the Ys fanbase at this point, so if they fuck up CS3 there could be an even bigger reaction. That said, if they don't fuck up majorly and instead the release is just middling (like the Ys 8 retranslation) it will be hard to make anything happen.

>>16153339

There's no way they don't get CS4 at the very least. CS3 and 4 are more or less a package deal. They're probably going to get Ys 9 too, unless they don't want it, and NISA seems desperate for properties after losing Dang It Grandpa and Nep. Like I said, at this point it would take a bigger shitstorm than Ys 8 to unseat them.

>I'm curious as to how many VAs in Cold Steel are in the union/clique that's attacking Vic right now.

From what I can see, none of them. The only VAs who seem to have joined in are primarily the anime-only VAs like Monica Rial and Christopher Sabat, who sadly should have been Vic's friends (and who despite claiming to have known this was going on for years were totally chummy with him until this started). Most of the non-union up-and-commers like Sean and such seem to be keeping their heads down, which is honestly the smartest thing to do at this point.

The only reason I mention contract obligations is because I don't know what kind of deal they made when they got the games and whether the deal was for just for those games in particular or for the greater series in general, which would allow them to pull out. Clearly if they could, they chose not to for cs3. That's what I mean by "best hope", that the NISA games were got on a package deal and afterwords once the package is over, if the deal doesn't allow them to switch out before hand, they'll go to another localization company.

I can only imagine the exact words used in a meeting with Falcom for them to sign them on again for Cold Steel, if it wasn't a contractual thing that is. Wonder if they had some inkling of their horrid localization history and brushed it off due to the speed and multiple language translations they offered, as well as nepotism between their bosses or they simply didn't know. It's this one. Remember, no company is your friend. All they want is your money, and they want it by doing the least amount of effort possible. The speed up arts don’t move you up in the initiative order, they make you appear in the order more often. I guess a better way of putting it would be that they apply after the next turn that the target takes. Combined with speed down arts on the enemies you can get a fast character like Joshua to take 5 or 6 actions before an enemy gets a single action even more later in the game when he gets evil eye and can inflict at delay

8acfc4  No.16163726

>>16163622

This might get messy because I have to simply a lot of shit.

>I'm interested in knowing what happens to Rean and his sister

After serving in the army and Northern Campaign to take over North Ambria, Rean becomes a teacher at the branch school of Thors and heads up Class 7, which initially just has three students and later five. Much like OG Class 7 they do missions around the Empire, though often get involved in Rean's assignments from the government as well. It's revealed Rean has been having more and more trouble with his ogre power over the course of the game. It's revealed towards in the end of CS3 that the scar on Rean's chest is literally Osborne's heart put into his body, as he was nearly killed in the same jaeger attack that killed his mother when he was four. Finally, at the Climax of CS3, it's revealed that the two sept-terrions in Erebonia, fire and earth, were once giant beings (the one you see in Nord is the Earth one) and their fighting in ancient times caused them to fuse into the sep-terrion of steel, known as the great power. This union also spawned a malignant curse that has affected the Empire through the years, driving many to violent and desperate acts (like Hamel). This curse was mostly absorbed by the holy beast of earth to try and protect the land, but bits leak out now and then. The new fused sept-terrion was broken into seven fragments, the divine knights, by the witches and gnomes, the two clans that used to follow each sept-terrion. The fragments have clashed over the years trying to reform the great power but it has never happened.

Osborne, Ouroboros and the Gnomes (who lead the black workshop) team up to try and revive the great one and the first step is to unleash the twilight on the world which means killing the great beast of earth and spreading the curse across the land. However, you cannot kill a holy beast without a weapon forged with the divergent laws. Millium and Altina are homunculi created for the purpose of being killed and turned into soul weapons, and they were created pretty much to kill this thing. Altina is taken at the game's finale to the corrupted primal ground of Erebonia where the holy beast of earth is. Rean and new and old class 7 fight their way down to rescue her, but when confronted with the beast are unable to kill it. Rean nearly dies until Altina steps up to protect him, but Millium pushes her out of the way and is hit instead, killing her. Rean loses his shit and he loses control of his ogre power. He slaughters the divine beast and unleashes the curse across Erebonia. In the confusion following his allies get away but he is captured.

He spends the first act of CS4 in captivity while the other characters do things. Eventually he is rescued and they snap him out of his rage. He joins with them as they fly across Erebonia trying to do things to stop the twilight and participating in the "rivalries" (1v1 DK battles basically) between awakeners. Eventually on the night before the final fight to stop Osborne he meets with Cassius Bright and undergoes his exam to progress to Divine Blade, which he passes. The then spends the final night with his chosen waifu or alone.

When Rean was nearly killed his father, Osborne, more or less offered his soul to the manifestation of the curse, which is actually sentient, named Ishmelga. However the price for saving Rean's life was marking him as the "sacrifice" that would bring about the Twilight and finally give Ishmelga control of the great power. There are two endings, the default ending and true ending. You always have to see the default ending first. In the default ending Rean sacrifices himself to ensure Ishmelga doesn't get what he wants and to purge Erebonia of the curse for good. In the true ending, everyone (like 39 fucking characters) fight the great power and Rean destroys Ishmelga, freeing himself of his ogre power and meaning he has to say farewell to Valimar. Rean is finally free to live his life

Elise doesn't do a whole lot. She's there. She doesn't have much character development and is still a brocon. She's one of the potential waifus but she's on the lower rung with less explicaite romance.

That's fucking shitty, I always thought Renne's past was one of the more interesting origin stories for a villain. It made her stand out more than the generic "evil goth loli" she initially appears as. I wonder if they're trying to retcon that plotline, especially since they already changed shit in the Crossbell games by saying the situation with her parents was a misunderstanding and it was actually a family not-friend that sold her off to DG cult's Paradise club.

>the royal family

When he was at Thors Emperor Eugent fell in love with a commoner named Ariel Lenheim, a cook from Alster. Together they Olivert, but the nobles refused to accept her, not allowing him to marry her like he wanted. Enraged that she existed and had a child, eventually they sent jaegers to her home to kill herand her son, but Mueller (who had been assigned there as protection) was able to save Olivert. Not Ariel, though. Torn up by the loss of the woman he loved Eugent never really forgave the nobility, hence his closeness with Osborne, though after Hamel and learning more about the cure his main focus became stopping that. He eventually married the daughter of an extremely low ranking baron, Priscilla, to thumb his nose at the nobility. They took on Olivert, who Priscilla treated like a son, and they had Alfin and Cedirc. Towards the end of CS3, Ash, one of Rean's students and a hamel survivor, sneaks a calvard-made gun into a formal royal function. The curse left in him by the attack on Hamel had slowly been driving him crazy and he shoots Eugent nearly dead (though he just barely survives). This allows Osborne to take over the government with Cedric's approval and blame the assassination attempt on Calvard in a bid to start a massive world war to facilitate the twilight. Eugent eventually recovers but he's more or less out of commission for the rest of the story

After CS2 Cedric because massively obsessed with strength and not being "weak" again and it turned him into a huge dick. He's been palling around with Osborne and more or less wants to be a new Ironblood. He spends a good deal of CS3 being a smug shitheel that clashes with Rean and his students, being a far more effective Patrick than Patrick ever was. In the finale of CS3 he joins Oscorne in the other in their plan. Testa-Rossa's remains are dug up and he becomes it's awakener. The plan is for him to kill Altina to use the sword. When Olivert arrives with the Courageous outside the battleground to settle things down, Cedric gives the okay for the explosives on the ship to be detonated, seemingly killing Olivert, Toval and Victor on board. He then tries to strangle Altina, but she stops him to go help Rean. He spends most of CS4 going steadily crazier and becoming more and more insecure. Shirley, of all people, ends up trying to calm him down and eventually succeeds after Rean defeats him in a rivalry and the curse that had been driving his negative impulses subsided leaving him a grieving wreck at how much he'd fucked up. Deciding he can't face his family or what he had done, he runs away with Shirley to join Ouroboros and becomes an Enforcer. Alfin is invested as crown princess. Like Elise, she doesn't do a whole lot, but is one of Rean's potential waifus, like Elise she's on the lower rung.

Olivert wasn't actually killed by the bomb, though. He and the other passengers aboard the Courageous managed to escape due to a few factors. He did still lose an eye though. He was nursed back to health by Schera and eventually returns in the last third of CS4 to ferry Rean and the rest around in the Courageous 2. At the end of the game he marries Schera and their wedding is more or less the end credits sequence.

> the Craigs

Elliot becomes a famous musician between CS2 and CS3. He doesn't have much plot apart from just being there to help out. He might have something going on with Mint? It's vague. His dad was one of Osborne's old friends and is actually the one that tells Rean about Osborne and his mother. He's more or less forced to work with Osborne and the military in CS4 and you fight him, but he basically comes around after that. Fiona's relationship with Neithardt is confirmed.

>the Arseids

Laura has become a master of style by the time you meet her again in CS3. She still lacks confidence in certain areas, though. Still, she helps Rean in her chapter of CS3 as well as the ending. Victor is seemingly killed when the Courageous explodes, but he survived like the other crew members, though he lost his left arm. He was taken captive by the Gnomes afterwards and brainwashed using one of their masks to work with them. Rean and Laura eventually free him and he helps on the final assault (he's actually a party member in a few sections). Laura becomes more and more concerned with Rean and is one of six of his main potential love interests.

>George

George is actually a gnome. Yeah the memes were true. After leaving Thors his mental conditioning broke and he returned to them. He seemingly kills Angelica when she learns about Crow's apparent survival by checking his coffin, but he actually merely captured her and brainwashed her like Victor. He was also in charge of putting the explosives on the Courageous, though he also put in a device to protect the people inside. He's a frequent enemy throughout CS4, but he is eventually persuaded to abandon the gnomes and help out Rean and co. He is also a temporary party member in the ending.

>Towa,

Towa is Rean's co-worker at the branch school and teaches Class IX, the administration class. They work closely together over CS3, though she isn't a party member. The ending breaks her pretty badly as George tells her he killed Angelica and tries to kill her as well, though she is saved by Michael and losing Rean was pretty hard on her too. She was captured along with Empress Pricilla and Rean and co. rescue her fairly early on into the 2nd act of CS4. They also free Angelica from her brainwashing here. Afterwards she sticks with the group for the rest of the game, though still not as a party member. She's one of six of Rean's main potential love interests.

>Bleublanc

Bleublanc is actually doesn't really show up in CS3, though it's mentioned that he didn't agree with Ouroboros's newest plan, like Vita. In CS4 he actively helps Rean and Co. He was one of the people who helped rescue Olivert and helps out at various other parts, though he is never a party member. In the final scene with Ouroboros they confirm neither he or Vita have come back.

>Fie

Fie is a bracer along with Sara. She helps out Rean at various points and is more or less a permanent fixture in CS4. Her main plot involves her interactions with Rutger Claussell, who has been revived due to being contracted with Zektor, The Palantine Knight. He clashes with the party a few times. Eventually Rean beats him and he allows the process to complete which absorbs Zektor and himself into Valimar, sharing a final goodbye with Fie. Fie spends her bonding events trying to get Rean to see her as the same as the other girls. She is one of six main love interests for Rean.

8acfc4  No.16163842

>>16163622

>Sara

Like Fie she's a bracer and assists at certain points and joins permanently in CS4. Her main plot is resolving things with the northern jaegers who have fallen under the sway of the curse. She also talks more openly about her past as a jaeger and the captain that raised/recruited her. He's pretty much the reason why she likes older, classy guys. Though starting in CS3 she starts taking an interest in younger guys. Well, at least Rean. She's one of six main love interests for Rean.

>Sharon and Alisa

More background reveals that Sharon originally showed up as an Ouroboros assassin to kill Alisa's father. However, in the aftermath of the explosion that nearly killed her Irina made Sharon swear to serve her family until "Franz" returned, which basically seemed to mean forever. However, "Franz" was actually Black Albrecht, the leader of the Gnomes and he does eventually come back. Sharon goes back to Ouroboros, becoming an enemy several times in CS4. Eventually Irina says that since "Franz" didn't come back, Albrecht did, she's still bound by her old oath and she should do what she wants anyway. Sharon then officially leaves Ouroboros to be a permanent Reinford maid and spend some time with Anton. Alisa more or less does random technical shit and angsts about her father and Sharon. She is one of six potential main love interests for Rean.

>Jusis

With Rufus being governor general of Crossbell, Jusis is more or less Duke Alberea now. He actually spends a lot of time paired with Millium. He also has been in contact with Angelica, Patrick and Musse Egret (one of Rean's students), who's real name is Mildine Cayenne, to from something of a new, more benevolent noble alliance. They form the backbone of the resistance to Osborne in CS4, also joining up with Calvard, Liberl, Crossbell rebels, Remeferia, Leman and Arteria to oppose the massive conscripted army raised by Erebonia. In the final confrontation in CS3, Rufus reveals to Jusis they aren't even brothers. Turns out Helmut was a cuck, and his wife fucked his brother than that's where Rufus came from. This is what caused him to bring Jusis into the family, but in order to not publicly expose his shame of being a cuck, he kept treating Rufus well and Jusis like shit so no one would suspect, which disgusted Rufus and pushed him to Osborne after Rufus' pathetic attempt to use Vulcan's jaeger corp to assassinate Osborne failed, which is how he became an ironblood. Jusis is pretty torn up by Millium's death and spends a good portion of CS4 angsting about it. He eventually settles things with Rufus, who has gone pretty far off the deep end due to the curse, by punching him. Millium's soul is eventually freed from Valimar's sword in the true ending and put into a new body, so he got his waifu back. She even caught the bouquet at Schera and Olivert's wedding.

>Crow

Awakeners are essentially immortal, so Crow revived not long after CS2, though kind of undead (just like Arianrhod and Rutger) but he was mind controlled by the gnomes soon after and spends most of CS3 as a masked mook calling himself "Azure Siegfried." The mind control breaks at the end of CS3 and he helps the others bust Rean out partway through CS4 along with Duvalie. He then fights Rean as the first official rivalry, but Rean refuses to allow Crow and Ordine be absorbed into Valimar and shares his life force with him. Crow then spends the rest of the game as a main party member, feeling like he's on borrowed time but trying to settle old debts. In the normal ending he dies with Rean and Millium's soul. In the true ending, though, he miraculously survives though and gets a second chance at life with everyone else.

>Also, how does the gameplay compare to 1 and 2?

Very similar. Overdrives from CS2 are gone. The biggest change is brave orders, which are buffs that can be activated at any time using bravery points (you know those things that you could use to rush and were basically useless most of the time). Some of these are really busted. CS4 fixes the balance on them a bit. Also a break gauge is added to enemies and once it fills they're broken for a bit and every attack on them is a crit. This is something else that be abused. Boss enemies can also go into an "exalted" state too once they take enough damage. They're slightly powered up and they can s-break. On the field you now have to use a special attack to get triple advantage. This uses a meter that builds up by destroying objects on the field. You can only get as much as a double advantage using the old method. The Arcus 2 also has a feature that lets you put a secondary master quartz in, with you getting half the benefits of said quartz.

Any other questions?

Of course they'll release ports. It's how they can parade Ys 8 around as a success despite most versions being fucked in some way. It comes to sales and so long as there are sheep, they'll get money and flaunt it to Falcom.

I hope you're right. It's so obvious that what NisA has done is hostile. They could have spent their time on getting the rights to countless great Japanese IPs; but they went after XSEEDs, because they wanted to stifle their competition and extract the potential of two niche series' with established reputations instead of taking the risk and putting in the hard work of localising games with a limited following outside of Japan. How anyone could confuse this situation as a positive development is really obtuse.

>>16166567

>I bet it's a fast job because I don't think the engine is that different from CS1 and 2.

You'd think so, right? It would also be reasonable to assume that there would be an offical release of the Crossbell games before CS3 given their quality and importance to the story. Are people unaware of this issue? Why couldn't XSEED or NisA just steal the fan tl, polish it up, and add the psp exclusive content?

>>16166793

>It would also be reasonable to assume that there would be an offical release of the Crossbell games before CS3 given their quality and importance to the story

Honestly, that one's easier to explain away. Mostly that the pre-3D Trails games sell considerably worse than CS did and it could easily be argued the return wouldn't be wroth the cost of the translation. And well, CS3 and 4 do explain the the characters and things through flashbacks to the point where you won't be lost but it won't have an emotional impact on you either. Then again, the same thing happened to the people who played CS before Sky, of which there were many. In the end it comes down to CS3 being the new one.

>Why couldn't XSEED or NisA just steal the fan tl, polish it up, and add the psp exclusive content?

The fan tl is coherent but no way would pass muster on an official basis. You'd still have to edit every line, which costs man hours. Again, I think it would be a worthwhile job, but I understand why XSeed never did it and given NISA it's not a surprise at all they wouldn't go for it.

Nobody ever talks about Tokyo Xanadu Ex. I bet if it was done by Falcom and had an English dub it would have sold more. The game did well in Japan apparently so we'll see a sequel some day.

I don't think there are too many of those. But there are people who played Cold Steel first because it looked more modern. After getting into the series I think very few people keep that mentality, though there are always some outliers. But don't learn too hard into the "Reee! CSfags!" mentality, since it was primarily created by cuckchan to creation needless factionalization in the community. In truth there are things I love and dislike about each arc,but I like them all.

>>16199881

Funnily enough I'm playing it now. It's okay, but Arksys got way worse with the translation as the game goes along, that's when you start seeing a lot of the cringy stuff like "fukkleducks" and the horrible out of nowhere Cthulu exchange. I actually just got done with Ys 8 too (I didn't pay for either, don't worry) and I actually think Ys 8's re-translation is actually better than TX's. I mean, Ys 8 (post patch) is basically a "garden variety anime subtitles" translation. TX is the one with all the embarrassing cringy memer shit. All in all, TX is not a bad game, it's basically CS1's structure mixed with Zwei combat. Kondo has more or less confirmed there will be a sequel some day, and I'm curious to see what it will be like considering so much of the original was curbed from CS. By far the most inexplicable thing about TX is how it has the best OP of any Falcom game. I'm honestly baffled. It's basically professional tier. Compare it to CS3 and 4's amateur hour OPs with excessive quality and it's like two different parent companies made the games.

You'd probably have to only change less than a hundred lines but I have no idea how you do that, where to find the original script or how to translate it well.

I just think people don't give a shit about TX, which I kind of get. If you're trying to use the dropping of the Ys 8 retranslation as an example, I just played through that game and found nothing to screenshot the way I did here. There were no memes or lines that jumped out as being obviously wrong. In the patched version anyway. I took a peak at the pre-patch and it beggared fucking belief but I did a thorough sweep of of Ys 8 doing all the sidequests and optional character dialogue and didn't find anything close to what I've found while going through TX.

It had it's moments. There's a lot of slow parts, though and it takes quite a bit to get going. For something cooked up with a lot of reused assets in like 9 months it wasn't bad. So far I've only hit a single hitch, one boss had an attack that crashed the game until I turned on shadows. Then that attack just momentiarly fucked up the graphics before reverting back to normal a second later.

The game is great, just finished my first interception mission. If I had any complaints, it would be that switching characters could be a bit more fluid, and the bosses are still not up to that felghana/origin standard. But they are really fun and a massive stepup from Ys Seven and Celceta, they are lethal while also dying fairly quickly and their attacks are mostly powerful and hard to cheese with flash guard/move. I feel that jumping and the whole third axis of movement gives the game a fair amount of depth over Seven and MoC.

Also I really like the characters outside of the fisherman. It's probably the translation's fault but I'm sick of all his lines starting with Gah-ha-ha. Otherwise so far the three characters I have play fairly differently in terms of movement, attack chains and skills(Laxia's playstyle, especially her blitz rush, is really fun) and from a writing prespective I like the kiseki type bonds you're forming with these characters. Laxia is an A++ waifu. Her outfit, her smug face, how tsundere nature, how she's constantly trying to pull her weight instead of bitching at everyone else, while still being feminine enough to be embarrassed at being seen naked. I had pirated a repack that let me opt out of voices so I decided to do so just for a test, but I hope that downloading the english voices isn't a terrible mistake and she's voiced by Burch or some shit. The interception fight was great and had excellent music and I think I like that gimmick. Fishing is nice and comfy, and I really like the idea of all the shops and facilities in the game relying purely on a trade materials system, it makes excellent sense and it turned the utter fucking mess that was the humogous amount of worthless materials in Seven and Celceta.

I fucking love it. I think one more game in this style and they'll make something as good as Felghana and Origin. Not that this is bad, but those two are on a level of their own.

Dear God all mighty, please, please, don't let NISA get their grubby hands on Ys 9, and if they do, at the very least let their port be playable so I can pirate it. Amen.

I'm still disappointed how Falcom refuses to have gear visually change your character model, but costumes are a decent addition. I'd unlocked Adol's one and green looks nice on him, but I'd be disappointed if all characters have one costume/they're all recolors.

Falcom just a problem with writing characters starting their lines with laughter. It's just this writing tic they've always had. People made fun of Cold Steel for all the "ha ha"s but I've seen the game in Japanese and I swear like 25% of every line starts with "Fufu." XSeed probably cut at least half of them.

>Laxia is an A++ waifu

>>16231041

I don't particularly feel much about Seven. It has some really cool story beats and whatnot, but gameplay wise it's a bit rough with you having seven characters that all pretty much play the same and needing to hold down attack for SP buildup(which is pitiful in Seven, like 5 points compared to Celceta/Dana's 40-ish and also charges automatically on not attacking which is heaven for your hand relief) and also a final boss that's a big fuck you since you are more than likely to have favorites of the seven characters, usually Adol who is also an unswappable member. I'd recommend it for some really cool story beats like Adol's coolest fucking trial by fire and a neat boss fight before the final boss. I also condone using a trainer or something for the first two phases of the final boss before reverting back to normal for the final phase, which is pretty good.

Celceta I hated through and through. The whole Adol has amnesia shit goes nowhere, the music is mostly ass and is often reused(for example the town->dungeon music is reused) and by the 2/3rd point of the game where you navigate the town before and during the stormwall and tower the game starts pulling some serious assery with the enemies, where every enemy is just fucking unfun to fight, can oneshot you and take a good solid 2 or so minutes of wailing on to kill. Those enemies exist earlier in the game but they are clearly higher level enemies to be ignored for later. It has the absolute worst fast travel/crystal teleport gimmick of any game I've played. The only good things I can say about it is that it has a nice ara mage who uses a halberd, and it introduced a QoL upgrade from Seven where charge attacks occur on your next attack, after a small period of not attacking, and SP gain is at least 7 times boosted from Seven which is a blessing. Also skill level ups are three levels rather than 10 and also every level adds an additional effect or something which is cool. Getting skills is

Dana I feel is a massive step up from either game. I'm going to list the major problems I had with either Seven or Celceta and whether or not Dana fixed them

<No jumping/aerial combat

>Fixed, the game has jumping and as a whole feels a lot faster and fluider than the previous two

<Rock/Paper/Scissors weapon type bullshit not really doing anything but forcing a character type on you

>Kind of fixed, the game introduces a break mechanic where a bar fills up after an enemy gets hit with the vulnerability attack type, and after it fills their armor breaks and they take a lot more damage from all weapon types

<Bosses are too boring, with easy, slow attack patterns that deal absurd 1-2 shot damage and also very large health bars

>Definitely fixed. Bosses don't have absurd health bars, and while they don't always have perfect movesets certain bosses have difficult movesets that favor just keeping your distance and waiting for an opening rather than just flash guarding through it. A few bosses still retain bullshit 1-2 shot damage though, though it might be because they outleveled me.

<Leveling later on is a chore

>Circumvented by Raid/Hunt missions, exp boost meals and items. Leveling feels faster.

<Flash Guard/Move breaking the game while also being integeral parts of the combat(Basically timing your dodge/guard before you get hit to get stuff like invincibility+speedup/crits for ~3 seconds)

>Still around, although with enemies and bosses feeling less spongy I don't feel like I'm relying too heavily on them and usually I just get a flash guard/move without actually intending to. The exception being the flash guard I always do before my extra attack for crits.

<Massive amount of materials leading to massive amount of farming

>Shops are all based around trading materials, trading up, trading down, lots of material type heavy landmarks, raid/hunt missions give a large list of materials, can also occasionally wash ashore the main village and you can find all sorts of materials through fishing

<Adol is the only fun character to play

>Sahad is pretty much the only not fun character to play. Everyone else is fast, has some really neat synergy with their skills and their charge attack hitbox and hitstrings makes for some neat variety. Ricotta's english voice fucking sucks.

<Where are the tiddies

>OLGA, LAXIA, DANA, KATHLEEN, MIRANDA, ALISON, MY BONER CANNOT CONTAIN ITSELF

tl;dr: Seven/Celceta/Dana introduce the party system. It's not as well implemented as 6/Oath/Origin especially when looking at bosses, but Dana is a massive step in the right direction. I have faith for Ys 9, especially since the difference between Seven/Celceta/Dana is quite noticeable compared to Origin/Oath/6. I'd recommend trying out Seven and dropping it when you feel like it, not really bothering with 6 and playing Dana.

Seven has cruxie though, so it gets saved.

I'm starting to think i played a different game to everyone else when i played celceta, the only two things i agree are the lack luster music and kinda annoying fast travel, aside from that the game is completely okay as long as you know how to defend you can down any enemies really fucking fast and aside from the last boss in seven, i didn't felt any bosses in either 7 or celceta to be damage sponges.

302090  No.16234781

>>16232753

I played on nightmare and they just feel that way when they don't have attacks that feel satisfying to dodge. Let me explain

Think back to the second boss in Felghana, the big tiddied demon who throws vertical and horizontal saws at you. Basically she goes down really fast, but so do you, and her attacks are pretty dangerous and require lots of focus and positioning to get past, but also she never lets up so while you're dodging, you also need to attack while dodging, which makes for some really intense boss fights. Most bosses in Oath had this, most bosses in Origin had this, particularly the rival characters.

The problem with Seven is, a lot of attacks can one/two shot you, mainly because it feels like it's taking into consideration the healing/revive items. For me I do not wish to have a downed party member during a boss fight because they miss out on the XP. Meanwhile a lot of their attacks are very telegraphed and favor keeping your distance and waiting for their cooldown/not attacking period to start wailing on them. And keeping your distance is boring, so you get flash guarding. Flash Guarding in seven is pretty fuck considering it has no Iframes so you're stuck mashing the shoulder buttons since a lot of attacks in Seven like the tornadoes and charges have multiple hitboxes or something like that, so sometimes you can spend up to a minute just flash guarding an attack(See the wind dragon's tornado, some of the final boss attacks for an immediate example) so you can crit, but they still have a lot of health even after you crit them and use your extra skill, and you can die very quickly where in Oath, Origin, and in most Dana fights(funnily enough I feel normal encounters are more susceptible to this than bosses, who deal much more reasonable damage with some exceptions(the big bird dinosaur at the mountain is the immediate example here)) you can take a few hits and keep going.

I think it's all because of the healing item system. Sure you can opt out of using them but the whole game feels designed around that shit. Healing on demand just doesn't really fit Ys at all and I wish they'd understand this in Ys 9, but I doubt it.

Cruxie is alright. I hated her segment of the final boss fight slightly less than Dogi's.

8a40ee  No.16234880

So anons, these past few months I have gone through sky, crossbell, and am currently re-playing cold steel again. I finished 1 and went straight into 2, but I am beginning to see it in a different perspective. Having played CS1+2 first in this series and then going to Sky/Crossbell, it feels like CS is really dull. I'm not sure what word to use to describe it but CS just feels like a really bad extension after going through it again. CS1 was rough around the edges but I could accept that after having gone through Sky and Crossbell in certain areas. But CS2 just kinda feels like it slowed down a lot and you're basically working with a class of kids who have zero conviction. This is especially true at the ending when everyone leaves and goes their own ways. It felt like that was a rather strange contradiction to what the game had been hyping up. I don't know much of 3 or 4, but I do know that a lot of characters from the past 2 arcs appear and I wonder if they just wanted to toss everyone in to make it seem epic or something. At the end of the day it feels very boring and far too "we're going to save the world". Maybe playing again was a mistake

8a40ee  No.16234887

>>16234880

Hate to double post but one more thing has been bothering me as well. The scale of the cast in CS just seems like it works against it more than it does for it. I am talking about mostly the males in this game though to an extent the females too. Elliot especially is one that I have seen pretty much no development for other than "muh music" Additionally, Jusis is pretty much given no defining role in what he does. Perhaps its the nobility factor that restrains him, but there just seems to be so little development for such a prominent character

b31856  No.16235130

>>16234880

>class of kids with no conviction

except when their conviction is what they're going to do after getting out of Thors. That was kinda the whole point for a lot of them. To just boost their resume for after they were done so they had a better chance at doing what they wanted they sped through their learning because they felt like they were ready enough to take on the world. They all went their separate ways because that's how things are in the real world and it was to accentuate how much Rean was chained in his position. While everyone else got to leave and do their own thing, Rean was stuck being a puppet and essentially back to square one in how he felt about himself. There wasn't a contradiction I do think it was a bit rushed though.

I guess it just felt like they had a chance to stop osborne which falcom has built up as someone who needs stopping since sky. But then crow dies and nothing happens. In fact, the entire plot of cs2 feels like bring crow back to graduate which just makes it seem odd. It seems like there are far more pressing matters but its always crow graduate, grow dead, crow crow crow in fact i really dont know why we go do attached to him. Maybe i missed something after 2 playthroughs but he feels so minor in one that him becoming a central plot point feels out of place. I both enjoy/dislike cold steel after this replay. And reading spoilers for 3 and 4 isnt helping.

b31856  No.16235222

>>16235149

I think you did miss a major plot thing about how crow was just acting like everyone's friend and when it turned out he was the big bad of CS1, his betrayal hit hard with everyone dunno how you can call him a minor character. CS2 was about how they gradually learn that Crow was just, ultimately, being used and the point was to get him back and make him realize that even if the friendship was all an act to him, they didnt care. They felt that friendship. They made that their mission to show him that. When he died and Osborne came strolling out, they were defeated. They lost the chess game. Rean offered himself to end the war. They were put in a really shitty situation and Rean took the path that would end the suffering. That's why they couldn't defeat Osborne there.

No i saw it maybe im just overthinking it. We had one field study with him and chilled for a couple months. But that hardly makes me wanna go save his ass. I guess to me that plot point makes the whole of CS2 unbearable because if i knew someone for such a short time and then they shot a big time politician and betrayed me, i wouldnt feel so betrayed as i would disdain for having killed a prominent politician. I just dont see the hard on rean has for crow and it feels forced. I guess i never connected with crow. Had the story been something like laura or emma betraying us i could get that but crow always felt secondary.

b31856  No.16235277

>>16235236

It really doesn't matter how you would feel if you were in Rean's shoes. Rean isn't you. We can see that Rean attaches himself pretty hard to those he considers his friends and after the moment in the Old Schoolhouse where Crow helps protect Elise, Rean considers Crow a friend I do think the player didnt see a whole lot of crow, but that's due to the game skipping months and a field study that Falcom cut but made into a drama CD. The player needs to realize that when the game is skipping months, the characters are still interacting and building friendships. I do agree that it is jarring sometimes but it does make sense.

>game that practically revolves around

That's not the main plot, though? It's always a secondary thing. There's always a main plot point that drives them to where they go and he just happens to be there too. For the record, despite what Crow says it's pretty damn obvious he liked Rean and Class VII and considered them friends. I mean his dialogue makes this pretty clear. It's also true for Towa Angelica and George. And let's be real here this series of full of characters who forgive other characters for bad things. Lowe did a shitton of damage with the dragon and could have easily killed people. Like with Crow he was just lucky other people stopped that from happening. He, in the end, meets a very similar fate. I honestly think people give the plot way too much shit considered some of the other things this series has pulled pre-Cold Steel. If you wanna talk about easily forgiven enemies don't get me fucking started on Crossbell.

Im not disagreeing that rean and crow are buds in the universe. Im sure they feel like bros and all but the games do a terrible job, in my view at least, making me feel any connection to crow. The whole betrayal and everything that followed felt so rushed. Im aware of the drama CD but i didnt see it. My main point is that to me, crow is a no one that acts as a funny character here and there and then leaves to do his own stuff. My first time through i guess i didnt really mind cause of other parts but my second time through it just makes it annoying. The "friendships are powerful" trope just isnt appealing to me at the moment

I always felt they were pretty clever at forcing screen-time for him that you wouldn't notice. He's around for some pretty pivotal plot scenes (like seeing Rean's ogre form for the first time), but they didn't overplay it too hard to the point where several people actually did get surprised by the twist. Cold Steel has problems, for sure, especially the first two parts of the arc, but I really don't think Crow is one of those problems.

Why there is a grave for Dana (not any Dana at that, as "the displaced" doesn't even try to hide it) in the floating continent of Ys in a game that happens years before Ys VIII?

I would think of this as just a little cameo of no importance, but Falcom likes to drop this type of hint at things to come all the time, just like in the first Ys manual they talk about the 5 dragons of altago and Kefin the kingdom of sands.

I'll let you know when it comes out, I guess. I'll probably do for it what I did for TX. Though, ultimately, when I went through Ys 8 I didn't find lines that triggered my autism like I did with the TX ones further up the page. Granted, that was only post-patch. The little bit I saw of pre-patch was quite atrocious. I guess in the end it'll depend on how much Kris and Ryan were involved. They seem to be acting like they've been on the project for a long time, like long before it was announced they were, but I can't know anything until I see it. For now, it's not like Cold Steel 2 ends on a cliffhangar and it's not like there aren't plenty of unresolved plot points at the end of Sky and Crossbell too. And, well, memes and cringe weren't really the problem with the original Ys 8 script either. It was just really, really poorly translated. Like bad 90s fansubs with load of unnatural dialogue and other things. Which isn't to say NISA hasn't memed it up before. I think the Nep and Dang It Grandpa games got hit with that, to my knowledge. All I can say is that wasn't a problem Ys VIII had. I can't know if CS3 will have it until I see it.

All that it needs is to get its footing back with the bosses and in that line of thought I think that Ys 8's Dana segments are truly the best gameplay segements in the game.

>Not bogged down by insane amounts of materials, grinding, etc.

>Side quests are relevant and to the point

>Lack of healing items(You can buy them but that's faggotry and not at all needed)

>No party system, meaning no three health bars at any given time, meaning bosses are intense and actually feel challenging considering they're made in a way where they don't one shot you but they're also not pushovers.

>Dana's styles change gameplay in a meaningful way, not only in the rock paper scissors damage system, but also completely different hitstrings, changing skills as well as interactions in the dungeon

It's pretty much pure gameplay for all of 20 or so minutes per floor and I loved it the most. Yes, the castaway village was nice. Yes, the characters being fleshed out was nice. Yes, the raids/hunts and fishing were nice touches, and so were the approval events. But at the same time there's no doubting that there's something off gameplay wise, especially considering the bosses.

I think the flash guard and flash move system should no longer be a thing. I think the dodge button should be a movement mechanic button with a special function to every character.

At the same time I think Ys 9 will turn out good. I do not really wish to fall into hype and blind "it's falcom so it's good", since I geniuenly disliked Memories of Celceta and Cold Steel 1 to the point of not finishing any of the games, as well as dropping the Legend of Heroes series for good. I also disliked Tokyo Xanadu quite a lot, and Gurumin felt mediocre in many ways. But, the leap from Celceta to Lacrimosa I felt was a massive one, and what little I read of an article gave me some semblance of hope that maybe Dana's forms are what is going to be the idea in mind for the party members in 9.

I guess all I could do is wait for gameplay footage and then play it when it's out. I do feel you when you say the Ys series doesn't feel particularly focused after Origins.

248d90  No.16264837

>>16264647

Yes. Play Chronicles since it basically is Complete, even allows you to use the latter's music and portraits.

It's bump combat, by the way. As in you bump into enemies off center/from the sides/from behind to deal damage to them. It seems odd at first but then you realize it makes grinding pretty natural and bosses are really nicely designed.

Two in Ys 1 are pretty bullshit, one is the final boss.

In about 3 hours and 15 minutes Dengeki Live is going to be on. There's going to be a 90 minute Falcom presentation where we'll see Ys 9 gameplay for the first time. In addition, Kondo also said he'll be talking about the "future of the Kiseki series." We already know that the Kiseki team has been split in two, with one half doing preliminary work on Calvard while the other is apparently working on some story DLC for CS4. So we might hear about that too.

Also I hope this doesn't run into the old musou problem of movement and combat feeling like two completely seperate paces.

Why are the showing Celceta and Dana PS4 versions? I thought they already existed, with those DLCs?

The Ys stuff was some very short clips that showed off movement and a tiny bit of combat and that's it. Adol is 24 in this game. The Kiseki stuff was just going over polls, Kondo answering some innocuous questions and basically an announcement for an announcement in June for the 15th anniversary of Kiseki. He did pull out some character art for Rixia, Thoma, Scarlet and (presumably) Wald, though, indicating whatever CS4 DLC they're thinking about doing will probably involve those characters in some way.

Let me take you back one game where the answer to every encounter was "spam spark dyne"

>major step down from the world-building and plot seen in previous games, with very noticeable asspulls

Highly debatable. Name me anything you consider an "asspull" and I'll bet I kind find one just as strong in Crossbell

>animations are robotic and god-awful

Welcome to all AA weeb games. The Tales series with well over double the budget and quadruple the staff can't manage much better.

>everyone's "merely holding back" all the damn time

"Holding back" is a Trails meme as old as Sky.

>actually good characterisation replaced Persona-lite character links, polluting the fandom with harem wars and shipperfags

Absolutely nothing critical is revealed in bonding events. The only reason Sky wasn't a harem game was because Estelle was the protagonist instead of the planned Joshua. Crossbell is full on harem complete with choosing your waifu and a beach episode. Critical backstory details for Rixia, Randy and Wazy are locked behind final bonding events, something even CS doesn't do.

>Mr. Mean Rean "Gary Stu" Machine himself

Rean is a consummate failure who hates himself. For all his supposed "power" all it does is hurt him and everyone close to him. Lloyd, conversely is actually a Gary Stu. Perfect in every way, everyone loves him, he finishes every game victorious and is excellently skilled from the start of his game. How big of a Gary Stu is Lloyd? When he and Rean meet Rean's reaction is "God I wish that were me." Rean is nowhere near as good as Estelle and Kevin, but he actually does have an arc, something that is in no way true for Lloyd.

They may feel a personal aversion to the student setting in Cold Steel which they then try to rationalize by pointing to other changed aspects; but I only base this idea off of posts like yours and I remember it being purported in a previous thread that this useless discussion was more of an issue for faggots elsewhere because the narrative categorization is obviously in which part of Zemuria the games take place, what new characters you play as, and how their local position (as bracer, detective, or student) impacts story progression to further develop the world building.

Anyway, it's because we'll be seeing all of our favorite characters that have grown beyond their original roles together in the latest Cold Steel that has me very excited.
