I wish there were more options to configure left and right control sticks separate from each other. Personally, I prefer inverted flight-like camera control for the left and standard camera control for the right, but in most games, it seems changing camera controls between "normal" and "inverted" changes them for both sticks. More and more games are including options for button mapping, but having an option to change settings for different mechanics or certain specific situations would be nice too.

Specifically, this is an issue in 3D platformers where you need to utilize a first person view to look around, games like Ratchet & Clank.

SKIP WALKING SEGMENT

I do not understand whose 300 IQ idea it was to give you long 1.5+ minute long, unskippable walking simulator parts for a game that you would be replaying for three different endings and then letting you skip the short, ~20 second cutscenes anyway.

You know what, as a general game option, I'd like any game to give me the option to completely skip all ingame interruptions like cutscenes, dialog, slow animations like opening heavy doors or the saving animations, shit like that.

Super Metroid got it right and that was in 1994 for fucks sake, and we still have games where you can't rebind shit except for maybe two buttons that are overall pointless in terms of usefulness.

Thankfully emulation fixes that. The real travesty is pc games that both don't have it and don't work with shit like joytokey so you're stuck with the default controls unless you buy one of those usb adapters that let you remap inputs at the hardware level.

It was so close, but in fact you could not remap diagonal aiming controls to anything but the shoulder buttons. If you want to, say, put the run button on L for instance, you have to sacrifice one of your diagonal aiming inputs. It's always been a lingering criticism to Super Metroid.

What major console before the PS1 had the Yes button on the left in America?

>Have you noticed that every platformer for the NES made in Japan is usually A to Jump, while the rest of the world was B?

Considering most good NES games were Japanese, it would've annoyed me even back then to play a NES game with the jump button swapped, and even then I don't think that was always the case with American-made NES games.

cbe590  No.16383119

>>16381226

Because that's where B is supposed to be, and everyone knows that's the cancel/back button, which is why they made it X. (The PS1 WAS originally supposed to be the "Nintendo Playstation", so it probably did have the SNES button names up until Nintendo backed out.)

The bizarre control reversal on American Sony consoles becomes even MORE bizarre when you realize that it didn't start out that way; a bunch of early Playstation games, including sacred cow Final Fantasy VII, have the buttons the right way around, making it even more bizarre that they switched later.

>>16383063

The only game I can recall on NES that had B for jump was Werewolf: The Last Warrior - which was actually a pretty decent game, but the backwards controls really screwed me up.

Other than that, I can't think of a single one, Western or otherwise, that had B and A reversed. The closest I can think is those weird Simpsons games where you had to hold down A to run, but even there, A was also the jump button.

I'll get used to the default controls and then I can play the game at a friend's house and not have to waste time customizing my own controls and looking like a bitch.

>>16349443

WASD is an awful control scheme for movement. I get people saying they want mouse controls instead of the right stick being used for a lot of things, but keyboard is really only useful if the game is suffering for lack of inputs, which only affects a few genres which are somewhat niche anyway. Also, mouse replacing right stick would be fine when right stick is then camera, but then you'd be sacrificing buttons unless your mouse has like eight buttons on it (which is how many inputs your right hand gets on a modern controller, plus moving the joystick). Then this is used for the justification of using a keyboard with your left hand, but then you're fucking yourself by replacing the analog movement of the left stick with WASD. Also I get triggered because W isn't actually directly above S, so it feels like I should be walking slightly to the left when I press it.

Also, the advantages to mice largely apply only to FPS and a couple other things. The genres I like are mostly from before joysticks anyway, so I don't give a shit. But they are shit to play on a keyboard.
