Because Source can't handle open worlds like the kind Bethesda makes. It relies on a map-by-map design, and each map can only be so big. Half-Life 2 tricked people into thinking it was massive because each level picks up where the previous left off, but it was still a trick. E.Y.E. and some Gmod maps push the level size to the limit, and both games are notoriously buggy and crash-happy.

Honestly, Bethesda would probably be better off going Unity at this point. The Daggerfall port is about as stable as any given Bethesda title, even in its unfinished state, and shows that the engine can do an Elder Scrolls game to some degree. It's also simple enough for any retard to use. Maybe that will let them focus less on bughunting and more on actually putting out a good game for once this decade.

Morrowind is a buggy piece of shit, worse than Daggerfall in all ways except for the fact it doesn't use the (then revolutionary) buggy procedural generation. Daggerfall was aspirational, every game they've made after the death of the Xngine has been "humble" (read: miserable and intentionally shit). It would be better for Bethesda to be relegated to making shitware and movie licenses than it would for them to make actual games. Julian LeFay was the only one who was holding the company up on the programming side, and Ted Peterson (unrelated to the other god of game design, Sandy Petersen) on the design side.

Oh and it works with map to map like Source, but infinitely smaller. And the physics? No such thing as momentum and acceleration without falling off a vehicle, platform, elevator. Don't get me started on how the engine handle bullets.

The one saving grace of the engine is that it makes modding easy, which means lewd mods, which means more sales. Modding is they key to Bethesda's success, at least on PC. Gamebryo tends to be a broken mess on consoles, but they get so few quality titles that they lap it up anyway.

I'm actually not sure, and I'd like to think I'm most qualified to say so because I specifically asked him about it during his Q&A at Quakecon. Yes, at the end of one of his hours-long lectures – I am also a programmer. As far as I can tell he was experimenting with the whole megatextures concept and pulled a Crytek, meaning he released tech which consumer machines were simply not ready for. Ironically the performance bottleneck is not GPUs but hard disk read speed (according to him). If everyone had SSDs when Rage was released, it might have been fine. I'm not sure if this is due to genuine market ignorance on Carmack's part, but I have not known him to shirk optimization in the past, but maybe writing code for consoles wore him down. Who knows.
