KTGee used to have a list of these kind of games, but it was baiscally strategy, puzzle and platformer games before 2002 or so. I'm assuming you don't have a GPU like I do with my Pentium 4 machine, so you're fucked. Some less accurate Genesis, PS1 and N64 emulators may also work, with varying degrees of glitches.

If I were you anon, I would make a 2500K build or something to that power, with a 750ti or something.

It's really pretty bad in general to use Steam for this, IMO. Unless they got ahold of the original creator, I've had all sorts of problems with retro stuff. Occasionally even then… Notrium was unplayable for almost two years.

You're going to have to deal with major PITA most likely, so I would just grab dosbox and trawl around Abandonia and myabandonware and torrents instead.

I mean if you really want reqs you should post the highest level thing you got running, like idk could you run this?

This has never been a good idea, you are basically building a shit tier PC and you will be dissapoint with the results.

Should a the very least get a decent $250+ GPU and a good quad core, then you will be in the limbo where you can play everything at 1080p at least but on mid-high settings, you should never aim for less than that or else you'd be better playing indie shit and emulators on that laptop for 6 more months while saving, than suffering with a shitty PC with bad framerates.

APUs like the Ryzen 2200G and 2400G are Core i3/i5 in terms of performance, and with some 8GB Dual Channel DDR4 RAM you will get decent performance and it won't bottleneck when you decide to buy a dedicated GPU. A typical budget build that has a Intel Core i3/i5 CPU with a GTX 750ti/1050ti would be hard to upgrade in the long run without having to resell something for less than half of it's price.

At your level, you can probably solo-clear "Towards The Future", an Episode 1 boss-rush which is easily repeatable and insanely efficient for EXP gains.

http://archive.is/fjmQ9#selection-1071.0-1071.4

Try clearing the quest in a normal playthrough, then run it again while strictly following the 'minimum kill' guide; you'll quickly learn the fastest route through the rooms, and ascend into PSO's higher difficulties (and better items) in no time.

Project Zomboid, NEO Scavenger, Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive, The Typing of the Dead (I don't know about Overkill)

If we're counting emulation, Mednaffe is a no-frills frontend for Mednafen, which is nice on weak hardware (except the Saturn component). It doesn't have the fancy bells and whistles of RetroArch, but it gets the job done. ScummVM is worth mentioning if you like adventure games and a small handful of dungeon crawlers. DOSBox will run everything you throw at it, unless the game has a lot of 3D involved or you start doing crazy shit like installing Windows inside the virtual disk. PPSSPP works better than I thought it would, but that will obviously vary from game to game.

Squeezing that last bit of usefulness out of hardware over a decade old is half the fun of PC gaming.

I haven't tried SWAT 4 on my machine, but I know SWAT 3 plays fine and is considered by fans of the series to be the more 'hardcore' of the two.

Most of them if you have the GOG installers. I have HoMM3 if you want it:

I also highly recommend installing the HD mod. It doesn't change any assets or gameplay, it just lets you run the game at modern resolutions and bring quality of life changes in the interface:

A strategy game can be unappealing if you're newly introduced because of learning curves. How easy is it to pick up?

HoMM3 is babby tier to learn. There's a reason why it's so popular. I'm usually not a fan of strategy games but this one is so easy to understand and play that I really like it.

Not using a general-purpose game engine like Unity or Unreal is a good start.

HOMM3 is a fantastic game, and single player is easy to pick up and fun. It's a true classic everyone should play.

As with many things, high level multiplayer is a different beast because the focus changes to racing to shamelessly exploit numerous broken game mechanics before the other slav can do the same to you.

If you're going to play on a low spec machine then just cut out Steam and pirate, or buy from GoG if you must, provided the game comes with a standalone installer. Just having steam running will eat up performance. I suggest

>SWAT 3

>Rainbow Six '98, Rogue Spear, and Raven Shield

>Simcity 2000, 3000

>Ghost Recon plus Desert Siege and Island Thunder

>Doom 1&2, including any and all wads and official games on the engine

>System Shock 1&2

>Deus ex

>Civ 2 and 3, Alpha Centari

>Syndicate

>Thief 1 and 2

>Daggerfall, plus Morrowind without any visual mods

>Ys I & II, Origin, Oath in Felghana, Ark of Napishtim

Also emulation, but I'd keep it below ps1 unless you want outdated builds of shit emulators.

Sage because too many sub nigger tier posts itt

You install gentoo then remove all unecessary graphics from the game, PGO also helps.
