I'd argue it's not an argument because digital copies of games are usually the easiest to archive. Physical cartridges will rot, ROMs can be hashed and spread across millions of people. What is a problem is games that are tied to online like MMOs. Notably, you cannot play WoW as it was a decade ago. Only as it is with whatever's been re-balanced and changed over time. You also have to play patched Diablo II on Battle.net but not locally, so you can enjoy exploits like the piercing guided arrows for fun.

Well it's not like you have any alternative since the store prevents you from buying the game (and sometimes DLCs). Also in some particular cases, the publisher can outright strip you the possibility to download the game you originally purchased. This happened a few times in my knowledge particularly from the PSN.

>>16534484

>Physical cartridges will rot

Physical disks and cartridges can be rendered unusable, but that's mostly depending how well you treat them and the environment where they're stocked (humid surroundings fuck them up easily). I can agree buying digital is overall a better and faster method for sharing although the filles better be archived elsewhere.

Personally, I'd say it's always alright to pirate as long as buy the game if the game is being sold and the money will go to the devs(it's okay to pirate Nier, even if you buy it you'll only give some gaylord that's sitting on a copy money, it's okay to pirate any game that's not currently on sale, without any moral obligation to buy it if it ever gets sold), there is no reason not to (invasive DRM, devs literally asking you not to buy the game), and you have the money.

There's never really been official means to back up console games. Ripping content was done through gaining unallowed hardware access, use of third party tools or reverse engineering the way the systems function to enable them to read out the contents of their devices and media. Learning how to get around these things has been a hobby scene for 40 years across numerous platforms from PC, to home computer to handheld to add ons, to consoles.

I don't like this "copy is not theft" argument because of how simplistic it actually is.

It's an obvious truth, of course, but it's starting from the position where there's already something to copy in the first place.

Where did that came from, and why was it made? Why would anyone put the effort, time and money to create that thing in the first place anyway?

It's easy to point examples of shareware and claim that it's perfectly viable and okay to release free games, but a lot of really good vydia takes considerable more effort and resources to be made to the point that it can hardly be made in someone's spare time. You'd have to invest in the Devs themselves, give them money so they can make a job out of producing vydia fulltime if you want anything bigger than most shareware games.

In that paradigm, pirating still isn't theft but it's not investing in the future development of more vydia, which is okay if you don't like that Dev's work, but if you actually want to see him do more stuff, it's in your interest as well to chip in.

It's kinda like someone opening a stand and giving out free lemonade. But if you pay for it instead, he can buy different fruits, more containers and open more stands in other streets.

Don't ban TOR. Nobody said free speech would be easy but banning it doesn't actually solve anything, it just validates his retardation. Education is what you need to shut them up. Here, watch this:

>>16534692

Argument Number 1: "Devs chase money, Pirates chase leftovers"

I like Overwatch and Undertale. I'll pay for Overwatch and Undertale. You like non-pozzed games but you won't pay for them.

The industry will shift to accomodate me, the paying customer, instead of you, the leech.

You're free to pirate all the pozzed games the industry is making for me. It's alright, I already paid them for you. :^)

Argument Number 2: "The Phantom Playerbase"

Pandering to SJWs is considered a very dumb move because they never buy anything.

By the same logic, why would any Dev pander to you?

>inb4 "u r jus liek dem SJWs!!1!"

Not even close. SJWs have more social pressure than you do, an advantage you're never going to have. Your wallet easily trumps this however.

If the market was a battle, SJWs have a very big and loud cannon that is actually unloaded while you're refusing to pick your nugget because you don't want to spend ammo.

>Where did that came from, and why was it made? Why would anyone put the effort, time and money to create that thing in the first place anyway?

>pirating and buying games are mutually exclusive

Piracy is just like borrowing your friends' games, except on a larger scale. It requires an initial sale and it allows you to learn about a new game without having to bite the bullet and spend 60 dollars on a huge surprise box(a surprise box that, if you don't like and refund, will hurt the developer, because, at least in the case of steam, the service keeps it's share of the transaction, meaning the dev has to pay back more than you gave them in the first place).

If it wasn't for my pirated copy of GTA SA on the PS2, I would have never even bought a single rockstar game, much less known about the series. If I just saw BeamNG as a physics simulator without anything else to it, I would not have bought the game, as opposed to pirating it, playing it and having fun, then deciding it was worth my money and paying for it.

Piracy IS just a copy, it does not hurt the industry in any way. Devs will lose money if you refund, but they won't even notice it if you pirate it. It is as harmful as not buying a product is.

I agree that good games need to be supported and games won't be made if you don't show there's a monetary gain to be made. But piracy does not prevent that in any way.

I do not disagree with any of that. I just think the simplistic view that "piracy is copying, not theft" isn't the whole picture and you can't consider it in isolation.

Consider Socialism\Communism for a second (Note: don't actually consider it at all, however). Every time you see someone defending it as a decent way to distribute wealth and end inequality, they always start from the point where there's already plenty of wealth to distribute. They never consider where said wealth came from and why or how are they going to get more once their current supply is fully distributed\spent.

Same thing here, where copying is all good and fine but that's starting from the point where there's something to copy, but that's not valid at all for any long term solution.

I used to pirate far more when I was still in school and had no funds for vydia, but even now that I have a decent salary, I still pirate most vydia I'm not sure to be worth the price they ask for. Often I actually end up buying it too so I know first hand that Piracy can even be beneficial for any Dev that doesn't try to hide behind Denuvo or Pre-Order Bonus or any similar practices.

But at the same time, I think the idea of investing in Devs so they make more good vydia isn't a very popular one, not even on /v/ where it should be an obvious solution to the industry. It's all black pills here, withdrawing yourself from the market because you're not gonna change it substantially and giving up in general. And that should not be the narrative, especially for an audience that cares more about vydia than most normies.

Case in point: You could pirate Endless Space with no consequences. But it's only because enough people bought it that we eventually got Endless Legends. And it's only because enough people bought both of these that we eventually got Endless Space 2. Supporting Amplitude Studios actually got us really good games. If everyone just pirate the first game, a few years later all you'd have to pirate would be Stellaris.

There's also some mental gymnastic here, where it's valid to pirate even from good devs because "someone else will pay for it".

First flaw in that reasoning is that, if everyone thinks the same, nobody pays for it, and while that's not going to happen, you don't know how many will chip in so why not be one of them?

Second flaw is the idea that they only need a certain amount to keep going that can easily be met by a fraction of the playerbase instead of understanding that every dollar counts for investment. Maybe they get to hire extra devs, a better VA, some more playtesters, extra content that doesn't have to be sold as DLC anymore, etc or even financing the next game so it can be sold cheaper.

Third flaw is that this puts the fate of the games you like in someone else's hands. If you play a game for 5000 hours but you pirated it, some newfag that only tried it for 5 hours but actually bought it has more reason to be heard by the devs than you. This goes for the entire industry as well, with devs pandering to those that actually buy videogames, so refusing to pay just means that someone else gets to decide what you're going to get in the future.

It's like someone inviting you to eat pizza, but since he is the one paying, he picks the flavor. It's free pizza but you don't actually choose what you eat.

>can't back up your legally obtained DLC/patches for later, when servers die, either, unless you mod, which is undesirable when you want to keep things 'legal' (you want to 'be a good customer and play by the rules', also you can't just mod other people's systems)

>without those files, the game will be missing content (even worse)

>if you mod your console after servers die, you'll only have the game disc, and you'll have to pirate the updates/DLC

tl;dr with modern consoles the legit paying customer is forced to break the law because there's no legal means to preserve games in their entirety

>I do not disagree with any of that. I just think the simplistic view that "piracy is copying, not theft" isn't the whole picture and you can't consider it in isolation.

That's because it's not the whole picture, but it isn't meant to be. It's meant to be an argument against "piracy is theft" marketing memes, which the base for arguments against piracy.

>I think the idea of investing in Devs so they make more good vydia isn't a very popular one, not even on /v/ where it should be an obvious solution to the industry.

For the most part it's a meme, just like "/v/ hates every game".

Just take any paid multiplayer game, say Arma 3, BDO or R6S. Whenever /v/ played those games together they actually bought the game. I remember back when we had an Arma server there was literally only a single fag asking for a pirated server, everyone else was content with supporting the game because they considered it a good game. The server peaked at I think 30+ players.

/v/ buys games, they believe in buying games. It's just memeing fucks and reddit trying to fit in for the most part.

You don't get to lord over me for using a jailbroken console while hypocritically defending PC cracking when the game's executable is also subject to copyright, and scene releases are typically the whole game and subject to issues like malware. I do not buy that PC is some Mecca for most gaming. I've been through multiple instances of faulty PC DRM: Future Cop L.A.P.D., Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Half-Life 2 and I know it's gotten even worse outside of GOG. Modern PC hardware and the OSes required for some games are also fundamentally untrustworthy. There's a reason most of my PC games are on an old computer and are either emulated or FOSS, while even my GOG stuff is on its own PC.

For me, consoles are their own separation into untrusted boxes, but when broken are functional and the DRM ceases to matter. Like literally, copying a Vita game, or DLC or update, is wget a .pkg from Sony, or copying a folder tree, and it works for all games on the system.

You still need to rely on servers to download PC games these days, physical disks disappeared in favor for digital storefronts. And PC releases have various flavors of DRM when there is one.

>>unless you mod, which is undesirable when you want to keep things 'legal' (you want to 'be a good customer and play by the rules', also you can't just mod other people's systems)

People in general are far less stuck about modding things than pirating something, despite modding often breach the user's contract (that nobody bothers to read anyway). Someone has to be a special kind of flamboyant faggot to be upset about modded consoles, even if it tends to go hand-to-hand with piracy.

just because DLCs are a shitty thing in general for the legal consumer doesnt mean they should be ignored for preservation. >>HAHA good one, you think the pozzed leftist companies give one half of one iota of a shit about your money?

The industry isnt only made up with those kind of freaks, you autist. For instance, the japanese publishers know for example DLCs will sell on ecchi games (or anything with cute girls in general) because their audience buy them in flocks, even if the DLCs can make up twice or thrice the price in total than the game itself. Senran Kagura Estival Versus costs 20 bucks these days but there are 150 bucks worth in DLCs (additional characters, costumes and accessories) at least.

Most insects and arachnids have fairly short lifespans (from days to a couple of weeks), for example your typical house fly. Lifespan is 2-4 weeks of natural causes. You might think the same fly has been bothering you for months, but in actuality the fly you're swatting today may be the great grandson of the fly you originally started swatting at months ago. And from generation to generation they change in size, so the reason you think that you're swatting the same fly is because this particular fly you're swatting at is so huge. But that's just cause a better fly mated with his daughter this time around.

Only mammals have long life spans, and long is relative. A dog or a cat has a lifespan which ranges from 4 years all the way to 25 years depending on the animal (25 is extreme by the way, most don't live half that long). An elephant has an enormous lifespan, living almost as long as humans do at 60-70 years. Tortoises are one of the longest lived creatures at 80-150 years and one of them living to an estimated 255 years.

Just curious as to if that's atypical for scorpions, or if maybe it's more that spiders tend to die quick.
