Can someone explain why people hate the epic store so badly?

I've been under a rock and don't see what all the moaning is about. I only use unreal for working on my own game, so I'm totally lost.

427950  No.16591214

They don't give a fuck about the consumer. Their business strategy is to court publishers with cash for exclusivity to the direct detriment of the consumer. Exclusivity deals are always bad for the consumer and that's their #1 business strategy.

Also it's 40% owned by shady chinks.

026961  No.16591219

If you're actually oblivious:

> Owned by Tencent (Asian Jews)

> DRM-controlled software

> Bans left and right of their asses

> Clunky client

> Same as Steam, games are not yours

(I though you needed an internet connection?)

> Shit games

> Bribing devs to bring their games exclusively to their storefront

I am missing a shit ton, so if anyone could add?

It's another walled garden, which means it's not in the consumer's best interest. If you want to see what a proper steam competitor looks like, see GoG.

18e27e  No.16591252

My main issue is the connection to Tencent and the Chinese government. Additionally Epic shit all over the PC with Gears of War during the Xbox 360 days, and now suddenly they wanna get in the good graces of PC gamers? What a crock of shit. Additionally the client itself is a piece of ass and offers no reason to use it other than exclusive content like Fortnite and Metro Exodus. Additionally they fucked over Linux.

Remember Steam back in 2004? It's basically that. They have absolutely no intent to compete, so they're trying to use Chink tactics and brute-force their way into the market and forcibly buy customers, instead of winning them over with quality.

depends, most games still support manual installation or some other method, which means even if the mod is blacklisted internally you could still get it to work (not that most publishers even bother with that, they'll just delist it).

for lewd stuff and anything else outside the normalfag range you always have to go outside the workshop anyway. meanwhile having mods at all shows normalfags what a perk it is (and also helps devs that the game is played longer so it can be sold longer for a higher price), a few publishers being cunts - which is also bad pr - doesn't outweigh the pros imo

Maybe, a niche embedded edition will keep the support alive for some 5 years more, and still enthusiasts (etc.) will keep using it for a long, long time just like there still are Windows XP (un)riced desktops kicking around. It's not as basic as you think, Linux terminals offer very good tab completion and other features that make typing commands a breeze. There are also some things that it objectively does better, like performing operations on many files at once quickly through wildcards and regex. The problem is it takes time – not all that much, mind you, but most people are still too impatient. If you ever get a chance to use it for your job, take it and use the opportunity to learn, you might be surprised.

Reasons why consumers hate Epic Store

>Offers absolutely nothing over Steam (The better revenue share doesn't count, games that moved from Steam to Epic Store did NOT have their prices reduced.)

>Prices on Epic Store are actually HIGHER if you use certain payment processors, as the Epic Store doesn't want to cover the fees.

>Only reason why it stays afloat is from exclusivity deals

>CEO autisticly barks at Steam to try and make themselves appear better instead of actually making their store better

Reasons why developers should avoid Epic Store

>Shit reputation means reduced sales.

>Exclusivity deal is rumored to just be "guaranteed" sales (Epic buys copies if you wont reach your target), meaning that any developer that believes in his own product wont benefit. (The new Subnautica not being an Epic Store exclusive despite the first one being given away for free is very telling.)

>Much of the better revenue share disappears for users that use payment processors with higher fees.

>Walled garden means the store can refuse your game for whatever reason.

>Epic Store's API's aren't public, but they definitely provide less functionality than Steamworks on many fronts.

>If Epic's Fortnite money runs out, so will the exclusives. If the Epic Store hasn't taken off by then, then your game will sink together with it. You can launch on Steam, but that simply wont create as much buzz as the initial launch.

I was quite hyped to see the Epic Store launch, as I want Steam to have competition. But we're now half a year later, and not a single god damn feature has been added to the store. We STILL don't have a shopping cart, for fuck sake.

Most people are have terrible impressions of CLI thanks to DOS being horrid (single-task and one instance of shell only, can't scroll back, pager sucks (scrolls one screen forward, can't scroll up), piss-poor built-in documentation (and tons of shitty retard-tier tutorials and books), no scrollback buffer, vague error messages, retarded syntax (see for loop), etc.). Most of those grievances are greatly alleviated in lunix (saner syntax, decent help (–help switches, /usr/share/doc, info and man pages, etc.), allows multiple terminals (even in consoles using a multiplexer), good pager with search for sifting through pages of text, etc.).

The hardest part about CLI today is probably finding out shit you had no idea even existed (e.g. shell options, relevant environment variables), and learning common no-nos (e.g. rm -rf ~/$VARIABLE). Syntax consistency across programs also kind of sucks (e.g. gcc uses single-hyphen long options, most programs use double hyphens; some programs make you write an option's value with space, others without, others use a =). Though I'd say once you get the basics down and learn basic utilities (e.g. ls, ln, cp, mv, less, find) it gets comfy real quick.

>it's unreasonable to not have any sort of user interface beyond a basic terminal for any sort of computer.

TUI has existed for a long time (see MS-DOS edit), and applications had a more efficient workflow too, being designed around keyboard use. It wasn't the pinnacle of UI design by any means, but it's still miles better than the bloated, eye-cancer-filled, clunky mouse-driven garbage with piss-poor keyboard support we have today (see steam, epic store, modern web browsers, etc.)

There's also smaller features they can introduce, as they have detailed in their 2019 roadmap and already have this year. They just aren't newsworthy because they're mostly some minor improvements to Steamworks or Steam Community.

It also means that they might be replaced by something else that may be even better. Too bad Epic spent the last 6 months they're not any better.

They're fighting a little bit right now, but it will not inevitably lead to a situation where one party stops gouging to undercut the other, leading to a chain that provides fairer prices and practices for the consumer. Rather, they might take turns gouging the same consumers or specialize in gouging different consumer groups, like an economic cartel. In the future, I can see Epic getting ACTIVISION GAME SPORTS and then Steam getting ACTIVISION GAME FPS if Epic doesn't screw up somehow.

They are slowly getting games through "osmosis" if you will. By that I mean that software development in general has been heading towards all encompassing platform support for a while. Microsoft directly supports development with their tools in Linux now. It's not the greatest, but this pattern has emerged all over. Another thing that helped substantially was that NVidia started releasing native Linux drivers again after not doing so for years; the open source drivers are honestly pathetic in this particular case. Many game engines, such as Unity, offer virtually no effort portability to the point where the dev says "Well might as well release for Linux because I just need to click a button and change a couple of config values."

Valve, for all the dumb shit they have done, actively support Linux gaming as well. Why? Because they don't want games to be bound to Microsoft's OS. Valve has to bend the knee to Microsoft's whim at a certain point if they want to distribute video games. They don't like that.

You attitude is like that of a motorist being pissed about how it's more difficult to disassemle an engine nowadays – you are right that it is more difficult, but the bulk of motorists do not care, and if they're even in a situation where they actually need to disassemble the engine, then it just means that the engine is bad.

The instructions on the newer intel architectures are not technically supported, which is what they're talking about. It probably works most of the time, but expect blue screens or other random bullshit. I was in the exact same position as you, got a new CPU that was not technically supported and I didn't want to deal with random issues. Terrible example and it's a bit of a strawman.

All shit breaks inevitably.

Being able to fix an engine easily, or use command line to fix an operating system is a good thing, and 90% of owners/users not caring about this doesn't make it any less so.

It might not be an important marketing point, but it's still a good thing.

Also, to your strawman, the average person doesn't need to access the terminal in Linux for daily use (just like the average person doesn't access 90% of the functions in Windows). So it isn't about whether a user cares or doesn't care about these features, it's about the fact that windows has two things that make it difficult for Linux to break into the mainstream.

<1: Microsoft has deals with OEM manufacturers to install only the most recent version of Windows on all of their pcs.

<2: Users are therefore always used to the most recent version of Windows due to a forced adoption by the very OEM manufacturers they're buying their computers from.

People bitched about windows 10 until they got used to it (many still do). So it isn't that windows is superior for the average user, it's just that it's what they were given and therefore became most accustomed to.

Linux isn't small because of it being a good or bad OS, it's small because Microsoft has a near monopoly on OEM installation.

I've never had blue screens or other system failures (honest engine). Ryzen works perfectly fine with windows 7.

I do think Intel was doing more with Microsoft to enforce 10 adoption though, so maybe that's a difference?

If I remember right, AMD had windows 7 on the early marketing for Ryzen, and then it went away, so I'm guessing Microsoft talked to them behind closed doors. Maybe the support was there originally, but they simply removed it from the ads?

There were a few east to circumvent barriers to get 7 installed, so perhaps they were put in place after the fact to go along with whatever Microsoft worked out with them?

Totally guessing here though.

Except Windows doesn't meet anything of that anymore you nitwit. It doesn't even 'just werk' anymore. You have to change a fuckton of user-raping settings out of the box (like forced updates, privacy, removing telemetry, removing M$ store), have to install VC++ runtimes/.net framework, updates alter many settings without telling you and every version adds more shit you have to change, etc..

>where they don't need to learn anything that has to do with the OS

Now you're just taking the piss. The moment a problem crops up (forced updates, program crashing, uninstall fails, font is too small), is the moment a Windows user opens google and looks up a tutorial or guide. Further, most people THINK they know nothing about Windows, but they know quite a bit (even basic shit like file extensions and 'safely remove hardware' are examples). It's just that they grew on it so dealing with its bullshit has become second-nature to them.

Moreover, catering to complete retards is always a bad idea. Look what mass-appeal, dumbing down, and casualization are doing to the games industry.

Exactly. The Epic store is slightly better in that there are no profiles, forums, groups, fake money, gambling/trading the fake money, no workshop, etc. although it's somewhat moot because I don't think any of the games on it support modding in the first place.

The rest of the problems, like the spyware, DRM, exclusivity, etc. are all problems Steam has. There's absolutely nothing that makes it worse than Steam in any of these areas.

it's the same design in the west, but it wasn't secured. so when she walked on it the pressure flipped it open and moved it which made her fall in.

it's like not properly fixing a sign, wind makes it swing, drops on your head, ded.

the difference is in the west that shit gets triple-checked, not only because you care enough that you simply don't want to anyone to drop in, but even if you don't your ass will be on the line with jailtime, fine or both.

that being said, china has the death penalty, so you'd think they at least care enough to not kill themselves. but then you get shit like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Chinese_milk_scandal

make of that what you will.

I don't think you understand what I'm trying to say. They are both spyware, and they are both DRM platforms, and this is what is wrong with them. The fake money, trading cards, social networking, mod distribution, etc. doesn't make Steam acceptable in any way shape or form. Those features make Steam more harmful.

I don't want a game launcher. I want these platforms to go away.

Why do you think a chosen method of offing themselves for people in cities is jumping from bridges?

Past a certain height it's the exact same thing as hitting concrete but even before that if the fall doesn't insta-kill you, physical shock + thermal shock will force your body into an unconscious state and drowning will take care of it.

There are ways to jump into water relatively safely from heights that largely means reducing contact with water to a minimum to increase penetration and not get as much surface resistance (essentially getting as stiff and straight as possible, you hold your shoulders with your arms and cross your legs over one another).

But relatively means exactly that, it's still unsafe as fuck.

the point is most companies don't want to release without drm, let alone denuvo, so you gonna have to make an account everywhere to purchase shit (because that's what drm is shitmunch). gog etc means fuck all when it only has a small selection of games and are worse versions than on steam. never mind that plenty of games bought on steam work without it and even if not all that shit that triggers you so hard can be completely ignored. no one forces you to buy cards or hats, add people to your friendslist or install mods via the workshop (which has more pros than cons, so you're extra retarded here)

you're nothing but a little bitch whining about MUH PLATFORMS when you don't understand the basic reasons why companies go with steam in the first place or why steam works the way it works.

worse, in your retardation you can't even comprehend how epic fucks over gog and other retailers while nothing of that was an issue with steam.

so you are either incredibly stupid or a very bad shill. either way neck yourself.

Not really. If you have memory to spare and at least one CPU core unutilized (and given that most video games don't use more than a few CPU cores at the most, it's likely) it's not going to make it slower at all.

Steam is shit, but not just because it's a program that runs at the same time as your games. There are far more intensive services you can usually shut down that use more resources than Steam, especially if you're running Windows, which starts up an assload of services nobody uses by default.

You're moving the goalposts. Even the first claim, that launchers are acceptable because publishers and developers want them, is still moving the goalposts. Developers like CDPR release stuff DRM free… that's an example of what everyone else should be doing. If you want to play a game that is a steam/epic exclusive, you should just pirate it.

Having some kind of identity as a buyer is an inherent problem with electronic money. It's bad, but that's not really the point here. It's leagues ahead of Steam and Epic.

But I don't think that the Epic store existing makes things worse than if all of those games were on Steam or something. They'd still be locked to a spyware DRM platform. It's a worse user experience for buyfags who want all of the new games and would rather just get fucked over by one company, but I don't care about that. I want these markets to go away and so I think making the situation worse for the users of these markets is a good thing. It makes the real alternative more obvious.
