Considering the price of a tablet with comparable specs, would the Switch be a decent tablet?

When they figure out how to install more OS, I mean.

Also, how's the hacking community doing so far?

How likely you think it is to expect a flashcart before the year ends?

2ac1b5  No.16598700

>Considering the price of a tablet with comparable specs, would the Switch be a decent tablet?

For what? Actually working? Tablets are a dead trend now, and you're better off going for some chink phablet.

>When they figure out how to install more OS, I mean.

Already possible, but really what will you do with it, besides emulators, which are already possible on the stock OS

>Also, how's the hacking community doing so far?

The whole of the 3ds and wiiu hacking community is on it, so there's a lot of effort. Right now it's running N64 emulators well, but there's a limited selection of homebrew games, and I dont know how mods are.

>How likely you think it is to expect a flashcart before the year

You can put an sd card in the system natively and pirate games that way.

I'm not sure if you want games out of it or an actual productive tablet, if its the former, thats up to your tastes, but get something in the DS or PSP family instead. For the latter, dont buy this as a productivity machine, I don't believe it supports external keyboard input yet through ubuntu.

c11b3d  No.16598708

Flashing Linux to the Switch is already fairly painless, only about 7 steps.

3603e2  No.16598717

I would be cool with a Switch with linux on it.

At low res it could probably do a decent job emulating shit. Probably would be nicer than other SBC handhelds.

1553b8  No.16598719

What the fuck do normal people use their tablets for that is more convenient for the price than a phone/laptop/computer? Serious question.

3603e2  No.16598729

Tablets are slightly more portable than laptops, that's most of it, that and trying to do anything on a phone is fucking awful.

6acd55  No.16598735

Bigger than a phone, lighter than a laptop.

If I had a tablet I'd use it for what I use my MacBook: watching YouTube and Netflix, and pirated movies, at work instead of actually working.

But it would be better because they're lighter.

Also, games.

6acd55  No.16598740

>trying to do anything on a phone is fucking awful

This, about a million times.

a98585  No.16598748

Linux is already running on the Switch, with docking support. If you hook up a USB keyboard and mouse to the dock, it basically becomes a full fledged computer.

2836f9  No.16598765

Sure, and that's pretty sweet but the queston is, a comparable unit would be how expensive?

e350d2  No.16598766

What is the point, though? Surely you can get a better laptop for 300 bucks if you need something small. If you need a better PC overall, that's piss-easy. And if you for some reason really need a damn tablet to run Linux, there's Windows tablets that are probably far better for the price.

What is the point of buying an expensive device to use it for things any other device could use? It's like buying a Mac and putting Windows on it.

3603e2  No.16598948

A nintendo switch

Is more portable than a

laptop and a pad

e0319e  No.16598953

Barely. You need a case/bag for it anyway, and at that point, what difference does it make? And again, there are plenty of tablets out there. I used to have a little windows notebook, one with a touchscreen and detachable keyboard. It came with Windows 8 and I put Ubuntu on it. It was just barely bigger than the Switch.

835c25  No.16599312

Hmm. So we don't need CFW to pirate on Switch?

5944d7  No.16601652

You do, and it has to be a Switch from before June last year. For a scene with "the entire 3DS and WiiU scene on it" they're doing an abysmal job of finding an exploit besides the paperclip one that's been fixed.

0ffcc5  No.16601672

Will I have to get a used one then? Since I presume that one bought from a supermarket will be the new unhackable model.

d1964e  No.16601698

Idk about normal people, but those cheap Amazon tablets are the perfect size for manga.

5944d7  No.16601707

Otherwise yeah, you're going to have to buy used, and if possible check the serial number before paying.

0210b0  No.16602636

If by that you mean shitty chink CFW solution with an expensive dongle, then yes - SX OS.

The big convenience it has is that it can run .xci cart images but that's about it. Supposedly emuNAND is coming soon for non-SX OS.

Note that RCM exploits are tethered. If you fully shut down the system (or run out of power) you need to reinject the payload. This requires a PC/tablet/phone. With your android phone and the proper usb cable you can coldboot into CFW directly.

a8fa8c  No.16602890

>This requires a PC/tablet/phone

it works with a pi too, rather than constantly connecting your phone to it. i believe there's a solution using a $6 adakit board that you can just hardwire and not worry about plugging in anything.

0210b0  No.16602909

Yep, handy if you like tinkering. Overall, having to reinject the payload is a small price to pay compared to the huge benefits that CFW brings, like being able to backup the fucking savedata.

Atmosphere CFW changelog mentions emunand support is in, by the way. Should still be buggy, so beware.

Manga is sadly mainstream as fuck. I try to find interesting series to read, just the other day I downloaded 300 of them in a batch. I'm going through them by size but the scan quality of these things is terrible even on a tablet. Don't worry about the serial killer thing. Manga isn't even edgy. It's frankly too tame. When the edgiest thing is Gantz or Prison School it's a sad industry.

So is it true that the firmware on your switch has nothing to do with whether it can be hacked or not?

ce041f  No.16613045

Yes and no. All early production Switches have the same hardware exploit due to the Tegra SoC, however depending on what firmware you're on putting anything on your Switch using the hardware exploit becomes difficult, and the chances of a true, all in one, coldboot cfw solution being available for newer firmwares is nil.

2b8c2c  No.16613102

Also I should ask why updating the firmware makes doing the hardware exploit more difficult?

My relative uses 10" tablet (that can stand on a table) for web browsing/youtube, very handy and relatively compact, still strong battery after 5 yrs of use, no need to deal with heavy, expensive and cumbersome winshit 1hr battery life laptop crap. Can you imagine lying on a bed with fucking laptop? I've tried, compared to tablet it is total shit, and no, browsing on a shitphone is just as bad, I would prefer 4" smartphone, no breaks please.

0e9c46  No.16613967

$300 winshit laptop has at most few hours of battery life, heats like crazy and funspin, many kg of weight, compare this to easily 1-2 days of use on 10" quite tablet, with headphone jack and sdcard available. I even installed adblock, firewall, xprivacy to block most of google BS.

0e9c46  No.16613973

Also, ~10" tablet is just perfect for reading txt, pdf, djvu, manga, whatever files.

It is not a PC killer, like was claimed by marketing dickheads, it still has a use when you just want to browse / read / watch in bed or in other place. Granted, if you have a TV, you can watch youtube on it, but shitphone is barely enough for a comfy reading, and I bet you don't want to hold a break in your pocket…

I will always prefer a laptop despite it being 10-30% less mobile than a tablet. I can

>run any software I want, nonvidya included

>rice the shit out of the UI

>have absolute freedom with what I want to run, with the engaging challenge of making it low recourse enough to work in a limited CPU (it's actually pretty fun for me to find ways to work around limitations believe it or not)

Only issue with laptops is that you're usually buying them from kikes and they break since they're pre-built and you're sol. But so are consoles so hey? I really don't mind limited mobility though since I'm not traveling the world. Laptops work fine in air travel and car rides. The only people who are REALLY concerned with mobility are probably jobs that require a bunch of traveling and moving which is in the minority of consumers lets be honest. And at that point you probably won't have the time to explore a library larger than a hand held.

I pirated some more games for Switch recently, but realized a few of them would play better on PC. My Friend Pedro because I don't like aiming with a joystick and Dark Souls Remastered because it's visually downgraded on Switch + running at 30fps. Switch is better off with mostly first party titles made specifically for the system. For Switch ports they'd best not be very taxing on performance otherwise they'll be better on another system with the only upside on Switch being portability.

Here's some stuff I'll be pirating in the future though:

<Super Mario Maker 2 - June 28th

Didn't play the first one, but after they've expanded on the idea I should really give this a try. Looks much better with slopes which should have been there from the start.

<Dragon Quest Builders 2 - July 12th

Played the first, but didn't play it to the end. I still put a lot of time into it and enjoyed it so again, having the game expanded upon with more shit in it renews my interest.

<The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - September 20th

I played the first remake on Gameboy Color to completion. Initially, I wasn't sure about this one, but I'd play Awakening again so why not play the remake. I never finished Wind Waker until the HD remake on Wii U which, aside from some overdone bloom here and there, was pretty damn nice to play.

<Pokemon Sword/Shield - November 15th

I played Let's Go Pikachu to completion so I'm probably going to play this.

<Luigi’s Mansion 3 - 2019

This is the one I'm looking forward to for real. The rest are like "eh, mite b cool." but this one I definitely want to play. Too bad I didn't see any solid release date for it.

Back on the subject of shit I pirated recently. I thought I would try out Dragonball Fighter Z, but look at all this motherfucking DLC: https://pastebin.com/Z6BqM3qL

I just downloaded the characters and the rest can fuck off. The characters are only like 150kb, but 1fucker will make you hop IP if you download even a single byte from them before you can download anything else. It was super tedious.

I was going to pirate Darksiders Warmastered Edition, but that shit is 13 gigs and I don't want to waste space on my MicroSD card. I saw Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen is on Switch and as much as I absolutely love that game it's another case of "it's far better on PC". Same with Resident Eviil 4. The HD edition looks practically unchanged. You gotta play it on PC with a texture mod to get a proper visual update to it. Honestly, look up that HD texture mod for the PC version of Resident Evil 4. I have to commend the autism that went into that mod; it's pretty gud. Unrelated to the thread, but here's some shots of it.
