I've just been wondering, are there any horror games where the "horror" aspect doesn't rely on tension and suspense?

I can't imagine a game like that. Fear that doesn't come from tension and suspense usually is attributed to something like not wanting to die and trying to survive, as in being afraid of being ganked in pvp.

Darkwood is pretty good. The devs released the game for free of The Pirate Bay and it recently got some [digital] console releases.

If you like Fatal Frame check out Dreadout. It's a PC game, but if I remember right I had to plug in a controller to get a puzzle to work right, so keep that in mind.

Most good horror films and games use Hitchcock's bomb theory, otherwise you'd just get cheap jumpscares. Like the other Anon said, the game would just have to be weird like a fever dream to achieve any kind of horror.

e618dd  No.16659758

>>16659752

>Hitchcock's bomb theory

Is this what you're talking about:

<“There is a distinct difference between "suspense" and "surprise," and yet many pictures continually confuse the two. I'll explain what I mean.

<We are now having a very innocent little chat. Let's suppose that there is a bomb underneath this table between us. Nothing happens, and then all of a sudden, "Boom!" There is an explosion. The public is surprised, but prior to this surprise, it has seen an absolutely ordinary scene, of no special consequence. Now, let us take a suspense situation. The bomb is underneath the table and the public knows it, probably because they have seen the anarchist place it there. The public is aware the bomb is going to explode at one o'clock and there is a clock in the decor. The public can see that it is a quarter to one. In these conditions, the same innocuous conversation becomes fascinating because the public is participating in the scene. The audience is longing to warn the characters on the screen: "You shouldn't be talking about such trivial matters. There is a bomb beneath you and it is about to explode!"

<In the first case we have given the public fifteen seconds of surprise at the moment of the explosion. In the second we have provided them with fifteen minutes of suspense. The conclusion is that whenever possible the public must be informed. Except when the surprise is a twist, that is, when the unexpected ending is, in itself, the highlight of the story.”

Forbidden Siren is 3 games worth checking out. Start with the first either on the PS2, PS4 digital download, or emulation. If you have a PAL PS2 or a good computer for emulation Siren 2 goes next. Then there is a sort of re-imagining of the first game on the PS3 called Siren Blood Curse.

All the games are mission based where you will play as multiple characters over the course of a couple days within the game. The stories are good, the gameplay is excellent for their time, and the visuals of the PS2 titles get really creepy. Especially the way they capture actual human faces and then render those on top of the 3D models. The PS3 version ditches this aesthetic though.

Horror game idea. I'll never make it so fuck it.

>Only light source is an old handheld

>PSP, Gamegear or Gameboy advance

>Puzzles would require different colours to solve, like a red light to solve a puzzle

>Light source is defined only by the game within the game (Game B). If you want to make the screen show red you have to find a red area inside Game B and pause it there

>Battery life is limited. If you dick around too much you lose your ability to see or solve puzzles and a grue eats you.

>Some monsters have good vision in the dark and light levels don't matter, others have poor vision and going to a dark area in Game B will make you invisible to them but reduce your light source

>Game B's music could work in similar ways

>Objective is to use your handheld to escape whatever location it's set in (Maybe a SAW like setting). Make it survival horror like ZombiU where if you looked down at your inventory the game didn't pause. So having to play Game B is tense even if Game B is relaxing. Also lets you play cute music while awful things happen, a classic horror concept

>Combines point and click adventure style puzzle solving with popular handheld games like a 2d platformer, a kart racer and a RPG. Finding different carts as you play through the game But not pixel shit. No modern cheating and engines, if it's supposed to be a GBA or Gamegar the internal game must fit the resolution and system limitations perfectly.

I suspect it has some really good potential but I'm not autistic in the game dev way. Figure it would be fun to discuss though.

Evil Within 2 is just a genuinely good game, horror or not. It has a great gameplay loop (go and explore, take risks, get your rewards, run the fuck up to your safe room, upgrade, 20 goto 10), and is satisfying as shit as a result. But yeah, the last third of the game is definitely the worst. But even TEW2's worst far outmatches the first one. TEW1 is just a fucking slog.

Also, I was doing reviews to prepare for 2019's wrap-up, and I guess this one is relevant to this thread.

Yuppie Psycho

The immediately evident problem with this game is that it's pixelshit. Definitely strike one point down. Strangely, it has genuine character portraits. Doesn't know what it fucking wants, does it ? Anyway.

Did you work for a big corporation ? Did you eventually come to feel insignificant and empty inside ? Then boy is this game for you. Yuppie Psycho is corporate horror. The setting is a cyberpunk nightmare where citizens belong to graded castes, and you, a G-list bumpkin, is mysteriously hired as top-class by the biggest company in the world. You show up, only to find everything in this company is deeply wrong. Your colleagues are either crazy or going through the motions like zombies. The higher-ups are nowhere to be found…and you need to go through the motions of being pleasant to your colleagues while dodging supernatural horrors. There is a cute asian AI girl to make up for it, but if you did live to work for corporate, this fucking game just might be too real.

I would recommend Evil Within 2, but I would never recommend Evil Within 1. I get your argument of the throwback factor, but no, it just isn't worth it. You know how important stealth is in 2 ? Well, it's just as important in 1 since you barely ever get any ammo at all, but you can't upgrade anything related to stealth, and 80% of the situations in the game have the zombies automatically aggroed to you anyway. It has its moments, but on the whole it's just pretty shit. Even worse, the main game really doesn't explain anything and you have to play the Kidman DLCs to understand anything of value.

The Executioner DLC is pretty fun though.

The Evil Within is a better game than The Evil Within 2.

Many of the story elements from the first game (like the Leslie character) are sacrificed to focus more on the Sebastian and his daughter angle for the sequel, but certain parts of the sequel are unnecessarily dragged out (like the last couple of chapters in the ashy Union). The Mobius corporation is just some cartoonishly evil faction that seems to want world domination. The boss fights in The Evil Within 2 were so generic (a few of them had the big obvious shoot the glowing weak spot to inflict damage) and the boss gauntlet where they reused the bosses from the first game in quick succession for the sequel was much better than anything else in The Evil Within 2.

Standard enemy AI in The Evil Within 2 was a joke since in the larger town environments you could run away from them if you were detected, then the AI would go back to their original patrol route, and from there you could sneak behind them to perform a sneak kill (ambush skill was overpowered). Enemies never felt as aggressive as they were in the original. You hardly have to worry about ammo in The Evil Within 2 because you can rely on stealth kills for a good portion of the game in the larger environments where sidequests are available, then on top of that you can craft a ton of ammo if you have enough gunpowder (I remember by the end of my first playthrough I had around 300 gunpowder), and on top of THAT you also had locker keys which could also give you additional ammo. I always felt overprepared for the next enemy encounter and I was never starved for ammo like I was in the first game. There was another skill you could unlock which automatically used a syringe if you took fatal damage.

If there's anything that sums up my disappointment in The Evil Within 2, it's those vending machines. Remember in the first game if you went up to a vending machine and kept pressing buttons you might get some ammo or green gel? If you got greedy and kept trying to use the vending machine it would eventually spit out a proximity mine that could kill you if you didn't defuse it quickly enough. In The Evil Within 2 if you kept trying to push buttons on a vending machine then you'd just see something silly pop out like a rat or a severed hand. The Evil Within 2 was never punishing enough. Even the classic difficulty was a complete joke compared to akumu mode from the first game.

At least The Evil Within 2 had some nice music…

Also what are some of the worthwhile survival horror games that have released within the last five years? Can someone make a list? It probably wouldn't be very long…

Alien: Isolation

Bloodborne (?)

Days Gone

Dying Light

The Evil Within

The Evil Within 2

Resident Evil 2 remake

Resident Evil 7

State of Decay 2

White Night

Anything else? What about upcoming survival horror games? Dying Light 2? The Last of Us: Part II? The Blair Witch, maybe?

The best part of Book of Memories is the lead designer was so salty from being blown out by fans and in particular TwinPerfect that he included lore in the game which made them and their criticisms of the dev's catastrophic mishandling of SH's themes a part of the SH lore itself in an attempt to shit on them. The mainline video series on SH by these guys is worth a watch for this payoff alone IMO.

Last good? RE2 or DMC5 depending on how you slice it. MAJOR game ruining spoilers below for RE2

Mr X chasing you through the majority of the game is one of the scariest things I've ever played. As someone who knew the original well I expected to be safe until scenario B, that fucker turns up and ruins your day. It requires planning ahead and making sure not to get cornered by him along with always forcing you to move faster through the darkness than you feel comfortable doing. It even makes Lickers a serious threat who would other wise of been avoidable.

Once you figure out where he can and can't go you lose a lot of the horror, but that's true for any game mechanic. It's not scary if you know how to defend against it. Having to run through the library to try and get some space was tense even when I was increasing my safety not decreasing it

>>16660237

Revelations has 2 big problems. It's action RE just before RE6 killed it so it's all flash and no bang. And it's dragging up shit that isn't relevant to any one but autistic fags who read wikis to follow the RE story (which is such a fucking mess nothing is ever canon by the next game).

I knew Book was going to be unplayable as soon as they introduced Vatiel (Think that's it's name) from SH3 as a quest giving NPC. That was just it, there was no coming back from that level of mishandling. I played through 3 levels and the gameplay was PSP to the extreme. Every room was a box and a corridor leading into it. You poorly bashed a couple of enemies and then started over again.

>The Evil Within is a better game than The Evil Within 2.

Oh, hell no you're not getting away with that one.

>Many of the story elements from the first game (like the Leslie character) are sacrificed to focus more on the Sebastian and his daughter angle for the sequel

TEW1 had exactly one plot point that got anywhere. Ruben wants his sister back, Ruben invents STEM, Ruben posesses Leslie and walks away at the end, thus nothing you ever did was of any consequence. Leslie being fucked was the only thing the first game ever did that was conclusively ended. So no, he's not getting "sacrificed", he's already dead and killed. The sequel uses another angle and makes the protagonist an actual character with actual motivations instead of just "WHAT THE FUCK ?"-man. And again, half the story of TEW1 is told in the DLCs, if not two thirds of it.

>The Mobius corporation is just some cartoonishly evil faction that seems to want world domination.

See? Mobius is in the center of TEW1's story but it's only hinted at in the main game, and only actually told in the DLC.

Essentially, TEW1 treats its actual premise like a shameful secret and pretends it's a haunted village sort of thing, only telling what it actually is about as a very drawn-out environmental storytelling. It really only works the one time, and on repeat playings you just know you're in a lame fake-out. In 2 you get the whole premise up front, and they actually do some cool shit with the simulation premise.

>The boss fights in The Evil Within 2 were so generic

The Lost alone are more creative than the entirety of TEW1's bestiary. 1 is the most derivative, milquetoast shit in existence. Pyramid head but it's a safe. A big dog. Le ebin long haired screeching woman with multiple limbs. A giant spider. I'm pretty sure that's it. Wew. And you want to compare that to a camera monster, multiple instances of Tzcimize fused-body creatures, le ebin long-haired screeching woman but a fucking buzzsaw for a hand, one of your former allies but with a gas mask melted onto his face, an ethereal ghost and a polymorphous wax monster? You're either lying or absolutely fucking blind.

That sure is preferable to a game that encourages you to stealth kill, but doesn't allow you to upgrade stealth, or give you the opportunity to stealth. Your argument seems to boil down to "I got shit for ammo in the original and this created tension, man !". Yeah, okay, sure, Tomm Hulett, horror games are all about having terrible gameplay. I understand. But if it's all the same to you, I'd rather pick a game that has an actually good gameplay loop, involving incentives, and fun shit to do.

This seems like a good thread to say this.

I've just finished Silent Hill 4,and I've got to say,I really liked it more than what I expected.

Seriously,so many people always shit on it for being unfinished (I felt that way more in 3 when you could only go trought a single road of Silent Hill, recycled from 2).

I don't think it's perfect,and probably I prefer the three other games,but I feel it's still a great Silent Hill game.

Everything about the room itself was genius,I didn't find any problem with the backtracking to save/drop items in the chest (the holes were basically save points,so maybe it just gets a bit longer to save, nothing more),it was still scary as fuck thanks to the fucking Ghosts, and the plot was gripping, intense and fucked up.

Walter is actually a good villain.

Yeah, the map design is lacking, mostly straight lines lacking exploration and puzzles (this was my biggest beef with the game: I loved the puzzles that required you to work with the room, like the one where you need to call a number to get the code for a door. But holy shit, one for dungeon is not enough at all).

And yeah, there were some classic elements that were removed such as the radio (the sound design was still great though) and the flashlight (I found the game too bright).

But it has so much going for it,so many great ideas that I feel like people dislike it only because it tried something new.

I won't talk about the soundtrack because it's fucking Yamaoka.

I'm with you, I haaaate that it gets such a shit reputation because it never deserved one in the first place. >it also annoyed me that they changed sebastions personality and voice so he may as well be a differant character

Can't say I noticed the voice, but you're just plain wrong here. Sebastian had the big problem of being not much of a character at all, most of his lines being "what the fuck?", but his backstory was explained in the personnel files you found around safe havens, and that was expanded upon in the DLC. He's a down-on-his-luck veteran cop who lost his daughter to a fire and a wife to a crazy quest to prove the fire was criminal. It's exactly what you have in TEW2. You have to not pay attention to think he changed personalities, all the difference is that in 1 he still kind of has his shit together due to still being employed.

No, I mean something that confront players with things people are actually afraid of. For example, according to Popular Science the top 10 phobias are: http://archive.fo/f7Abp

>Heights

>Reptiles

>Public speaking

>Deep lakes and oceans

>Clowns

>Break-ins

>Devastating tornadoes

>Small, enclosed spaces

>Technology I don't understand

>Flying

In addition, according to About, people's top 10 fears are: http://archive.fo/crFWO

>Arachnophobia: the fear of spiders and other arachnids

>Ophidiophobia: the fear of snakes

>Acrophobia: the fear of heights

>Aerophobia: the fear of flying

>Cynophobia: the fear of dogs

>Astraphobia: the fear of thunder and lightning

>Trypanophobia: the fear of injections

>Social phobia: the fear of social situations

>Agoraphobia: the fear of being alone in a situation or place where escape may be difficult

>Mysophobia: the excessive fear of germs and dirt

As far as I know, only ONE or two of those fears (Out of both of those lists) is only ever used and has pretty much laid the groundwork for what is now "standard" in every horror game. Are there any games out that there that deal with all these other fears (And, possibly doesn't have isolation or claustrophobia just to add a twist?)?

Yeah,I know that and I agree.

But often there are games that ARE different but still feel part of the series.

Breath of Fire V is decent if you take it as a stand-alone game, the problem is it's part of an RPG series with a strong identity and so a roguelike (kinda? It's honestly pretty unique) wasn't what people were expecting from the series.

I think that it should have been a spin-off,then it would be less hated.

But in Silent Hill 4's case,it really does feel like a Silent Hill game.

Not only on the surface, like rust blood monsters ecc,but the execution, atmosphere, fear.

If being a rusty meat hell was enough to be a true Silent Hill game, then Origins,Homecoming,Shattered Memories and Downpour wouldn't have killed the series.

Origins follows a lot more closely the classic formula than 4,but it feels just like a bootleg SH1,not a new game.

That's because it lacks the atmosphere, the kind of plot the series has,the imagery and the allegories and, obviously the most important thing, the gameplay.

While 4 already had some differences,it still largely played the same (except for fucking charged shots, now that's a broken mechanic),Origins instead started to transform the series into something that never was in its nature ,an Action game.

And this is like the RE4 of the series.

But RE4 at least was a great game, even if it killed off the survival horror of Resident Evil, but Origins was just shit.

And Homecoming even more, following its shit trail and becoming a full action game (can't talk about downpour,I won't touch it any time soon).

What I meant with this rant is that, yeah being too different in a mainline game can be a problem, but in Silent Hill's case the too different sure as hell isn't 4.

It's different enough to feel new and fresh but still deeply rooted in the series.

Fucking Origins and Homecoming are the problem here, not 4.

Shattered Memories is alright though, not a Silent Hill game at all,but still an okay adventure game. At least it was a spin-off

There's a difference between just not being "true Silent Hill" like 4 and being a complete shit "horror" game like everything that followed it.

>>16675545

I'd have it work something like this. The nude "outfit" would increase movement speed and all action speed by around 1.1 to 1.2 times. But you would have less attack than normal, take more damage, and panic easier. Since attack is based off of your boots, you would not be wearing them, and unable to equip them. In exchange though, the lack of boots would give the same effect as wearing the feather boots. Not sure if I'd also force the player to be unable to equip chokers and earrings for true nudity and to line up with the lack of ability to equip boots.

Additionally, but requiring much more effort to implement, I'd like to add a loli mode where you play a much younger Fiona. This would have the effect of lowering attack, defence, run speed, and stamina, and increase the rate of panic gain for a much harder mode that can additionally be stacked on top of Hard Mode. To compensate, loli Fiona's size would make a large variety of new hiding places available. And of course, this would be compatible with all the game's outfits. Both the nude outfit and loli mode would be treated as unlockables like all other outfits, but have steeper requirements than any other outfits.

And finally, a change I'd make to one of the original outfits, is that Under The Scalpel would be pantiless, as it logically ought to have been.

Siren 1 is nowhere near as bad as people meme it. Played it for the first time two years ago and the only real problem was gauging distance for melee. The puzzles weren't as impossible as people said, the guide in the manual was useful. And the one puzzle I kept hearing about I skipped entirely because I just bludgeoned a cop to death instead of looking for a towel and stuff.

Siren: Blood Curse is the most janky of the games and that's just because the PS3 chugs when sight jacking and the bloom manages to be really distracting.

How? The entire game is literally just about a guy going, "Boo, hoo, hoo, I denied the fact that I killed my dying wife, and I can't get over it for THREE FUCKING YEARS." Still being jaded about it, I can understand, but the entire game is just on pretentious trip that tries to make something emotional about an incident that EVERYONE who has seen a relative pass has had to deal with. Watching a family member (Or even a pet) slowly losing control of their minds and bodies is emotional only the first time you see it happen. Everything afterwards is just a melancholy reminder that we're all going to die, there's nothing you can do about it, so stop being a whiney faggot and actually fund a way to LIVE YOUR GODDAMN LIFE in the brief time that you have.

That only people who consider Silent Hill 2 to be a "moving experience" are niggers who never had to actually confront this shit in real life. At best, the game is just a love story with a twist that your wife is dead. At worst, it is one of the most damaging games to every be released because everyone who knows about the game's existence has essentially destroyed the survival horror genre with trying to recreate it, without underatanding ANY of this shit, and everything would have been for the better if this game was forgotten (Or, even just never existed).

You're right, but honestly I don't know how to describe BoFV as I found it quite unique as far as RPGs go.

Roguelike is a shitty description anyway, like Metroidvania or Soulslike

And about SH4,why do you think it isn't a true SH game? I'm not being dismissive or anything,I'm just interested in hearing why people feel like that.

While I really liked it,I can see why it's so divisive because as I've already said IT IS different, but not enough to compare it to shit like BoF.

And the American games aren't only shit games, but they haven't in the least captured anything that feels like Silent Hill, especially the atmosphere and the sound design.

Other than the gameplay clearly.

I'm really curious so please not just this anon but everybody can say what they think about 4,I find interesting just how much of a love it/hate it case it seems to be

>You're right, but honestly I don't know how to describe BoFV as I found it quite unique as far as RPGs go.

It's an RPG that also blends time management into it's gameplay. Not strictly a countdown clock since it does change with your actions. Rogue did this as well with it's hunger mechanic although you had the possibility of lowering your hunger within a single life. You'd have to abuse the reset system to drop your D-Counter back to 0%. I've seen a similar mechanic in the Resident Evil Outbreak games where you're fighting against a clock mandated by how far along the zombification process you are. I don't know if I'd call DQ a roguelike as well but at the very least people should know about how dying interacts with progress.

I like Dragon Quarter myself, but I also think that the Franchise was already on a decline just looking at the sales which had dropped from III to IV at least for japanese copies. I get the impression that Capcom was going to pull the plug on the whole thing since it's always been a niche series, and Dragon Quarter was a hail mary by the developers to just go all out and do something different. There is at least one interview out there where the devs talk about how they wanted to make use of the new platform and make a harder game than the previous entry and really change things up because they weren't going to be using sprites anymore. Even as a Gaiden game it might still have been the last game to come out before Capcom decided to resurrect it with a shitty mobile title.

I don't know, I can't think of any other game I can directly compare Yuppie Psycho to. The gameplay is based on resource gathering and avoiding damage so you can successfully investigate a semi-open-ended building.

I'm not familiar with the works of Ligotti, but the story is that of a fresh-faced, naïve schmuck who is thrown into a corporate work environment that has been slowly rotting over the years partly due to the nature of corporate itself and the influence of a witch.

The tone is comedic at times, not because it's a parody, but because of the protagonist's bumbly nature and because the corruption has twisted the chipper and friendly facade of corporate into something truly absurd. I can't say it has mass or cult appeal, but it is a neat theme to undertake for horror.

No, although I also enjoyed it. It's just an HD version of Silent Hill 4's room segment, which, to that list's credit, at least they gave Silent Hill 4 proper respect. I still wouldn't call it scarier than Silent Hill 3, however. Also, Resi 7 absolutely does not deserve to be anywhere near the top, it should be in D at the highest. Everything else on that list is whatever, I don't particularly care.

I actually ended up giving The Evil Within 2 a try because of this thread. I played the first one years ago, and fucking haaaated it. Thankfully, the people here were right and the second game is much better. It's not necessarily a good horror game, but it's a better game regardless.

As insane as Kenji was, I think Enemy Zero has potential for some really good stuff if anyone ever wanted to give the idea of invisible enemies tracked via sound a second shot.

The save function also was a neat idea combining limited saves ala Resident Evil and also charges you for loading a save too. A lot of people won't like something like that because it not only forces you to ration saves, but it also more overtly punishes you for dying a lot and that game has enemies that exclusively 1-shot Laura.

Anon,I loved 3 too but come on.

The story wasn't that great,it was simple and cut to hell and back.

You don't ever see Harry's face when he dies for God's sake, and the part that takes place in Silent Hill is only about half of the game (but still top tier)

And it has also recicled content, this is no opinion,it's just like that.

The city is just a road copy pasted from 2 (try to play them back to back,it was jarring as fuck for me),to the point you can even go to Heaven's Night (that is untouched from 2) for a pretty good easter egg.

But fuck, you only go throught only ONE fucking road of Silent Hill.

That shit smells of cut content,as does the lenght compared to the other titles.

Now,don't get me wrong.

I don't agree with all that anon said.

For example,I think that the sound design of 3 is still top shelf, the game was by far the scariest of the 4 for me and the enemies are awesome (even if I like 2's monsters a bit more).

It's a great game but you really shouldn't look past its flaws, because they exist and they are very fucking big.

I still think that 1 and 2 are the best (and I like 1 more),and that 3 and 4 are good but flawed games.

Honestly though 4 felt a tad more unpolished than 3,but a lot more complete.

The last part of 3's plot is an hilarious shitshow,Claudia eating the fetus had me burst in tears laughing, while 4's was a lot more sad, intense and better executed.

The worst has to be the last fight with her when you can see her crawling around looking for you and you just know she's going to come get you at her choosing not yours.

come on anon, I still still love SH3 but why is it so hard to admit it's an incredible flawed game that they saved money and time by half-assing your trip to to the town by literally dropping you into a tiny section that you had already explored in SH2? Everything is identical except you have arbitrary cut-offs that they were too lazy to even model with broken roads like in 2, and instead just spit out a prompt from Heather that is akin to LEAVING BATTLE-AREA.

And nigga, Brookhaven ""is"" reused from SH2. It doesn't matter that they give you different hallways to go down, ""until"" you hit nightmare hospital everything is just taking same assets, textures, and room geometry but setting them in another section. There are some original pieces of course and some new stuff here and there but it feels closer to an expansion pack than something fresh for that first part. ""Which is perfectly fine artistically"" but don't act like they didn't re-use shit when it's obvious they did. Here's an honest question for you: why didn't they come up with a brand new spot for Leonard to be holed up in and let you explore the entire town to get there rather than make the player go back to the same hospital from the last game by taking a semi-linear 5 minute run?

That's why my favourite section of the game is the office building because everything there feels unique and special and really captures that thing SH does best which is running around an otherwise mundane place by yourself in the dark solving puzzles and being menaced by scary looking monsters.

Well, the mall is unique, the subway is unique, the construction site is unique, Hilltop Center is unique, almost all of Brookhaven is unique, the Lakeside Amusement Park is unique, and the church is unique, so if they were intending to quickly push out a low effort game by reusing SH2 assets they did a fucking poor job of it.

>It doesn't matter that they give you different hallways to go down, ""until"" you hit nightmare hospital everything is just taking same assets, textures, and room geometry but setting them in another section.

Well color me shocked that the hospital hasn't undergone any serious renovations over the years, I guess they couldn't afford the new wing after the tourism industry dried up. How long do you think you spend in that version of the hospital, exactly? How long do you think it took to make all of the completely new assets for the nightmare version? Even if you're imagining they saved time by reusing the level geometry, the nightmare version has a completely different layout, so what's the point?

>Here's an honest question for you: why didn't they come up with a brand new spot for Leonard to be holed up in and let you explore the entire town to get there rather than make the player go back to the same hospital from the last game by taking a semi-linear 5 minute run?

Here's an honest question for you: what are you even talking about? "let you explore the entire town to get there", but "come up with a brand new spot"? Drop some random new location into the existing town? Do you think some really weird shit must be going on at the Pet Center that needs to be checked out? Or maybe it's more thematically appropriate for Heather to explore a hospital level, since it's indelibly tied to her past self. If it wasn't Brookhaven, they'd be staying at the Riverside Motel and exploring Alchemilla, and I guarantee the nightmare version of the level would be unchanged from its current state.

where did I say the entire game is recycled? What part of my bitching about two specific sections of the game indicated that? My point was that of the 4 (good) games, it's the weakest of the bunch and part of that reason amongst the other stuff I posted earlier is the obvious (and poor) reusing of the previous locations like the hospital and the narrow section of the town nearby. In the same post I told you how much I liked the office centre so don't act like I'm shitting on everything whole-cloth.

But since you brought (some of) them up let's look at the areas:

>mall

okay area, not enough stores to explore in my opinion but whatever, overall works fine but goes to shit in the Nightmare version

>subway

mostly boring, everything looks the same, filled with annoying dogs. Has decent ambience to it and the ghost that shoves you is creepy

>underpass

holy shit this is bad, a sewer level minus the water, enough said. Thank god it's short

>construction site/offices

>silent hill

blows, is a total waste

>hospital

boring, re-used from 2, nightmare version has some incredible unique rooms and visuals but is also annoying

>amusement park

boring, shitty, some half decent visuals here and there but overall sucks

>church

see above

I noticed you didn't address my point about why they just drop you off at the motel and don't let you explore anywhere outside of a narrow space designed to funnel you in one direction. Letting them off the hook and just saying that thematically it's okay for them to reuse locations from the previous game because why would something have changed!!! It makes sense!!! when you should be asking why they didn't change something to make it interesting. Excusing laziness both technically and creatively is what I'm talking to you about here, hand-waving it as thematically appropriate doesn't cut it for me.

> Do you think some really weird shit must be going on at the Pet Center that needs to be checked out? Or maybe it's more thematically appropriate for Heather to explore a hospital level, since it's indelibly tied to her past self.

nigga this is what I'm getting at, stop being autistic and look at the map of SH and use your goddamn imagination to think up something interesting to send the player to. Why not send the player the pet centre, maybe as a chance to explore the town because the way to the hospital is blocked or something that requires a trip there to get an item? Look how easy it is! You're letting the devs off again when, like you say in your own post, they spent the time doing a bunch of unique areas and then suddenly half ass the one place that's in the goddam name of the game and that the series is famous for. Shit, the rest of the game makes you run back and forth for various reasons but suddenly that goes out the window in the only section set in the town itself? If you find the hospital "indelibly" connected to the game and necessary fine, you can have it. If you had asked me 16 years ago or so when the game came out I'd have agreed with you but now when I play it all I see are half-baked concepts that rely on you being distracted by how goddam good the game looks rather than how it plays.

Genuinely curious what order you played the series in.

I want to try out Fatal Frame.

But I was wondering which version of 2 should I play, the PS2 or the Wii one?

I can play both on them on their original console.

So PS2,Wii or both of them? If so,which should I try first?

And should I even bother with 4 and 5?

>why would something have changed!!! It makes sense!!! when you should be asking why they didn't change something to make it interesting.

But they did. And you just dismissed it all with "boring. sucks"

And you wanted more of the town to be available but you also complain about the small portion of it that's in the game being recycled. What exactly do you think they would've done here? Get the entire town area from SH1 and recreate it for PS2 on a slightly-above-average budget? SH2 was downscaled as it is, because of limitations and SH3 and 4 had even more of them. The devs decided it was a better idea and use of their resources to make new areas and content than try to go for the empty open-world meme

>where did I say the entire game is recycled? What part of my bitching about two specific sections of the game indicated that?

You'll notice I said earlier that complaining about recycling is petty, considering how little of the game is actually recycled (in proportion to how much you're whining about it, anyway), and beyond that you'll have to articulate yourself more clearly for the rest of us. You accuse them of recycling content both to save time and to save money, despite the fact that, provably, almost none of the game is truly recycled. You can't weasel your way out of it by saying "the obvious (and poor) reusing of the previous locations LIKE the hospital and the narrow section of the town nearby" as though there are any other examples of reused content in the game, because we both know there aren't.

>But since you brought (some of) them up

>(some of)

Speaking of petty, I brought up every single one except for the street in Silent Hill, which I didn't feel was necessary, there's no need to snipe.

>In the same post I told you how much I liked the office centre so don't act like I'm shitting on everything whole-cloth.

I kind of just wanted to ignore that sentence since it contains the phrase "that thing SH does best which is running around an otherwise mundane place by yourself in the dark solving puzzles and being menaced by scary looking monsters", which is a braindead take on the series' appeal.

>I noticed you didn't address my point about why they just drop you off at the motel and don't let you explore anywhere outside of a narrow space designed to funnel you in one direction

I didn't really feel it was worth responding to. They "drop you off at the motel" because Douglas drove there, there's no reason he would have to park at the Observation Deck and walk the whole way like James did. I was hoping this would dawn on you at some point while writing your post, but if they were really trying to pad out the game by lazily reusing SH2's assets, why wouldn't they let you explore the entire town instead of just a single street? It can't be because Heather already knows where she's going and arbitrarily placing you farther away from that level would just be disrespectful towards a player's time, right? Letting your imagination run wild for a potential, ideal Silent Hill 3 where Heather slowly explores every corner of the town like Harry did, because that would somehow be more interesting than walking straight to the hospital (after having spent hours exploring four other levels), is frankly insulting to TS's effort. You're asking for an entire, full-fleshed game to be tacked on to an already full-fleshed game, turning your nose up at the levels offered because surely some other levels would be way more enjoyable to play.

>Why not send the player the pet centre

Obviously because that would be fucking stupid, specifically why I chose that example.

>look at the map of SH and use your goddamn imagination to think up something interesting to send the player to

There really aren't any, unless you're talking about the north side of town. You want a nice bank level? How about the Ridgeview Medical Clinic, is that better because it's not technically the same hospital from SH2?

I'll clarify again, in case you missed it from the last post, that calling SH2's Brookhaven and SH3's Brookhaven the same level is just dishonest, and saying it's "half-assed" is insulting. They created just as many unique assets, rooms, and horror situations as they would have needed to for an entirely new level anyway, I don't think on top of that they need to literally call it something else for your sake.

>Genuinely curious what order you played the series in.

Release order, genuinely not curious why you asked.

>>16687933

That's just insincere, and a paltry attempt to divert criticism. Don't act like you're holding this game up to a high standard because you love it so much, you're ready to throw out every single thing in the game and replace them with something of your own invention.

They're both good, but if you can play the XBOX version over the PS2 version since it has more content. If you want to play both the original and remake, then play them in release order. Otherwise, if you hate waggle then don't bother with the Wii version.

4 is garbage, and the controls are horrible. 2 Wii has better controls even though both games are waggle. I haven't played 5 yet so I can't tell you about that one.
