FFXI Private Server installation instructions - Manual Patch/Repair method

First install both Playonline and FFXI on your computer, there are a variety of ways of doing this.

Retail version, steam version, Torrented version, or official from Squares site (http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/download/media/install_win.html)

Once both FF and Playonline is installed, go into Playonline and update it, once it's updated, say you're an existing member, and make a bullshit account

Once Playonline is finished installing Go to tehkrizz.net/FFXI/downloads.php and download the FEB patch files, which, if done correctly

would only take about 3-4 hours of updating. (Most likely less than that though, since the files are fixed, USE A DOWNLOAD ACCELERATOR) (but we'll go over that in the next step)

Take the files from the download you just got from tehkrizz's site, and move JUST the MOV, ROM and SOUND folders into your Final fantasy XI directory, allow it to overwrite

everything it's asking to overwrite

Once that is finished, take http://www.dspt.info/FFXI-UpdatePatch.zip this patch, and move & replace the files within the Final Fantasy XI directory

Then run the Playonline Viewer

Select "Check files"

Check files for both Playonline and for FFXI (FFXI should have "Version unknown")

The check file for FFXI should find anywhere between 2000 to 7000 "Broken" files, repair these (This process should take about 3-4 hours, maybe less)

After updating is complete, and your head filled with that wonderful playonline music, take the /data/ folder from the PlayonlineViewer directory and move it to Final Fantasy XI's

directory

this game is from 2002, and it ran on the playstation 2, so it's very basic. you pick your race, and then you have your choice of 8 different face/hair combinations, each of which comes in 2 colors. then you pick small/medium/large character size, and that's all.

there ARE bearded males, for the hume and elvaan races.

just to put it in perspective for you, this game

* Predates World of Warcraft by 2.5 years

* Came out less than 2 years after Quake III Arena, and only one year after Devil May Cry (1)

* Came out 2 years before Monster Hunter

* Same year as Metroid Prime, SSBM, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and BMX XXX (remember that?)

* The same year as the movies Ice Age, The Two Towers, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

* Supported thousands of players per server and over 100 players per zone in 2002

* Was the second-largest MMORPG in the world for a very long time, behind Everquest, Lineage, and then World of Warcraft

* Has a fully 3D world with non-linear dungeons and tricky puzzles

* Has a proper Final Fantasy storyline, complete with scripted cut-scenes and memorable characters (and was the first MMORPG to do so)

* Has 22 classes, which you can pair up in hundreds of combinations (equip two at once)

Unfortunately on the private server not all of the content works. Most of the base game, Rise of the Zilart, and Chains of Promathia content works, but some job abilities (Paladin's "Cover" and a couple of Corsair rolls; the entire Puppetmaster class) aren't working. Some Aht Urhgan and Wings content is in.

Anyway, this game is probably as old as some of you reading this. If you haven't played it you should come give it a try, even if only for the historical context; FFXI is truly one of the pioneers of the genre.

Here's what I can remember

Race Kind of matters. Basically you can play whatever, but if you want to min max really hard, you need to pick stats that match your class.

So don't be a sembo and go Elvaan BLM if you want to min-max. If you want to just have fun none of that shit really matters too much and just have fun.

NPCs don't automatically take quest items from you, you have to manually trade them.

Crafting you legit need a wiki to find the recipes for (there was a function in game, but it doesn't work and it's really minor)

anything else…. oh right you need to buy spells as a mage.

The "field tomes" or whatever greatly speed up grinding.

There's an explorer moogle near your town's main residential area that'll teleport you to most other cities.

Make sure to grab homepoints so you can teleport to them.

Crafting is a bit of a mess, but also how you'll get a majority of your gear.

Food is really important

Fishing doesn't work

SO YOU WANT TO PLAY FFXI

This guide doesn't cover getting the client set up and all that. If you need help with that, refer to the OP. I strongly advise you take the time to set up the game using the official configuration utility (in your start menu) and also set up Windower as it will make your life easier. Having another monitor to open the wiki on (or a tablet or smartphone) will also make a huge improvement in your quality of life. It's basically a requirement, actually.

Once you have everything set up, login and hit Create Character. The character creation process is just like retail; pick a race, gender (if applicable), starting class, and starting city.

*Starting city should optimally be the one your race is from (Bastok for Humes and Galka, San d'Oria for Elvaan, and Windurst for onions and cats) because you get a pretty damn good ring, but ultimately it's not critical especially with the 10x EXP rates here. You can always change your allegiance later.

* Starting job (job = class) is literally irrelevant. You can change jobs at any time in your moghouse.

* Gender is irrelevant; as far as race goes, as the other poster said (>>8652598) it does make a difference but ultimately it's not that big a deal. Here's the rundown:

– Humes are all-rounders in general but are better at black magic than white.

– Galka have immense HP and VIT, terrible MND and MP. Good at melee jobs, mediocre at magic jobs.

– Elvaan have the highest STR and MND, good HP, poor MP (better than Galka tho), and awful DEX and INT. Bad at thief and black mage, good at paladin, monk, and white mage.

– Tarutaru have the highest MP and INT, but poor MND and terrible VIT and HP. Very squishy, but they make amazing black mages and summoners. Generally the best at magic classes, but they have good DEX and AGI and make good thieves and rangers and such also.

– Mithra have ludicrously high DEX and AGI, but awful VIT and only mediocre STR/INT/MND. Average HP/MP (same as Humes). They are decent in anything but tank jobs (unless you do evasion tanking.)

Galka and Mithra have bad CHR and so are sort of bad at Beastmaster/Bard/Dancer compared to other races but again keep in mind that the differences, while relevant, aren't critical.

Whatever you pick, keep in mind that you can always change your job back and forth to whatever you want whenever you want, so if you make a Galka WHM then decide you can't deal with the tiny MP pool anymore you can change to Samurai or whatever and be min/max-y.

38225d No.8654022

>>8653585

ONCE YOU'RE IN-GAME

After you login you will be unceremoniously dropped into your chosen home city with little direction. There was SUPPOSED to be a story cutscene which would then point you to a tutorial NPC but I don't think DSP does that. (I didn't get one anyway.)

You should take some time to explore the "Config" option on the backside of the main menu. (Default is Numpad - to open menu, hit it again to flip around to the backside of it.) There's a lot of really important shit buried in obscure-sounding pages like "Misc. 2", like aspect ratio configuration, chat language filter, and more.

One thing of particular note is the controls configuration which is easily missed under "Misc. 2" in the Config Menu, labeled as "Keyboard Size". Compact 2 lets you configure it, Compact 1 was (I believe?) the default on the PC release, and "Full" was the layout on the PS2, where I used to play. I only know the "Full" layout controls, which are more or less all on the numpad, so unfortunately I can't talk about the controls for other layouts. However, the default here is Compact 2 which is pretty configurable and more similar to other MMORPGs.

Once you've spent some time familiarizing yourself with the controls, get used to the concept of the game's Main Menu and Submenu. The Main Menu has two pages and is summoned with the Numpad - key by default. The Main Menu is where you'll manage your character and includes basically all of the game functions.

The Submenu comes up when you select a target and press enter. (Select targets with Tab and Shift+Tab.) The Submenu is all actions, and what actions are available depends on what you have selected. Until you get a feel for the game and start making macros – a critical part of playing the game at higher levels – this is where you will take most of your actions. Critical on this menu – and easily missed – is the "check" option, which allows you to examine the equipment of other players or to "check" a monster to see how difficult it is. That'll be important in the next section.

GETTING YOURSELF KILLED

So, use your map to find your bearings and then head out of town. In San d'Oria this means heading out into Ronfaure, in Bastok this means heading out in to Gustaberg, and in Windurst this means traipsing out to Sarutabaruta. Whereever you are, when you step out the door, immediately in the next area will be a bunch of monsters. DON'T attack them yet.

Look around your immediate area and there should be a Field Manual nearby. (If you can't find it, open your Map and select Wide Scan.) Click on the Field Manual and select Individual training – for your first time, the first page should be good. The game's chat window will tell you what to hunt.

Once you've selected a training regime, make sure you're ready to fight.

* First, make sure you have your weapon equipped! Warriors will have started with an Onion Sword, Thieves start with an Onion Knife, Monks start with a White Belt (and no weapon, but it's fine, you don't need one yet.)

* Mages will start with a spell scroll and a junk weapon. Equip the weapon, but make sure you use the scroll too. White Mages start with Cure, Black Mages start with Stone, and Red Mages start with Dia. If you want to really be on the ball, you can check the wiki page for your job and then go to the magic shop in your town and buy the scrolls for your first ten levels or so.

After that, it's time to kill shit! Find a likely target – preferably one from your training regime – and select it with tab, then "Check" it. As long as it doesn't say "Very Tough" or worse, "Incredibly Tough", you will probably be okay. Hit "Attack" and move into range and you'll begin auto-attacking. And now … we wait! Super exciting, huh?

Once you defeat the monster you'll earn experience, possibly some items, and because this is a private server, a ridiculous amount of gil. Normally, in FFXI (like, say, on the retail servers), even the first few levels would take a dozen or so kills, but here, with the EXP rate at 10x, you will probably level up every kill until level 6 or 7. Once you've completed a training regimen, you will have earned some "tabs" which you can spend to buy 'field support' (buffs) at the Field Manual.

One thing I want to note at this point because it's REALLY IMPORTANT is that while your level is very important, it isn't the only factor in your success in combat. As you were fighting, you probably noticed messages about your skills going up – Sword/Club/Dagger/Staff/Hand-to-Hand skill, Elemental Magic, Enfeebling Magic, or at least Evasion. These skills are ultimately what determine your character's abilities; even if you are at the level cap (Lv75, on this server), if you have a poor skill, you will be unable to hit with weapons or land spells with magic, and when you do connect you will be ineffective.

Unfortunately, with the EXP rate at 10x, your skills are going to fall behind to some degree, particularly early on. This is just unavoidable, so don't panic; you can always raise them later. Just be mindful of those ratings in situations like when you equip a new weapon type (say, equipping a Sword on Thief when you've been using daggers); you have no skill, so even though you're level 40, a level 40 enemy is going to soundly thrash you.

If you get torn up in a fight or run out of MP, you can heal (by pressing Numpad * or typing /heal in the chatbox); it takes 20 seconds for healing to begin and then you will regain some HP and MP every 10 seconds. You can get 60-minute Regen and Refresh buffs from the Field Manual by spending your tabs that you earn by completing the "pages", or training regimens.

I GOT SOME LEVELS, NOW WHAT?

So you're probably like level 10-15 by now on the job you selected in character creation still running around with your shitty Onion Sword in your Mithran Gaiters or whatever in the newbie zone. Run on back to town.

NORMALLY, in Final Fantasy XI, one of the big rites of passage as a new player is unlocking the ability to equip a Support Job (commonly called "sub-job", "sub", or "SJ"). This is the ability to equip a second job alongside your primary job, and you normally can't do the quest to unlock it until you are level 18.

HOWEVER, here on Comfinity, we have support jobs unlocked from level 1! (I probably could have told you this sooner but I felt it was important you get at least the semi-authentic noob experience, hehe.) Head to your mog house in the Residential Area. Your map will show the way.

When you get there, your Moogle will offer some tutorial information about the Mog House if it's your first time coming in. Read it or skip it as you like, but know that Gardening doesn't really work here on the private server, at least as far as any of us have tried.

Select "Change Job" and you can change your main job, or set a support job, but everything besides the job you started on will be level 1, so setting a level 1 support job isn't very useful. My advice is to set the job you've just leveled to Support, and then something new as your main job. A few tips:

* Check the wiki page for your new job to see what weapons they are skilled with. Each job has a few weapons that they are most proficient with, and you'll want to be using those to ensure the maximum accuracy and damage output.

* For mage jobs, make sure you stay at least semi-current on your spells. The magic shops will sell most of what you need from levels 1-30 or so.

By the way, the next time you head out of town, stop on your way out at a conquest guard and get Signet. (I should really have mentioned this sooner.) Conquest guards will have some identifying letters after their names: "T.K." for a San d'Orian Temple Knight, "W.W." for a Windurstian War Wizard, or "I.M." for a Bastokan Iron Musketeer. Select them and ask for Signet, which is a buff which has a number of effects:

* Increased chance for a monster which gives XP to award a Crystal on death. Crystals are used in Synthesis, or crafting.

* A portion of XP earned will also be gained as Conquest Points, a special currency you can spend with the gate guards to purchase powerful equipment.

* Grants a small defense and evasion buff versus enemies of Even Match and below, while you are engaged and autoattacking them.

* Signet also prevents you from losing TP while resting.

So yah, pretty important.

NOW I GOT LEVELS ON 2 JOBS, BUT WHY

Once you hit 25 or so you can start digging into the story missions. Talk to one of the gate guards NEXT TO your signet guard (not an I.M. or whatever, he'll just have a name, like "Argus") and they should offer you a mission.

FFXI offers "missions" and "quests" and these two things are not the same. Quests are available from almost any NPC, and their rewards are often unique to that quest, such as otherwise-unavailable spell scrolls or pieces of equipment. The most important reward from quests, however, is "fame", or more accurately, "Reputation". As you do quests, your reputation in that area will increase, making more quests available to you, and reducing the prices of items from NPC vendors.

The other type of tasks, "Missions", are story quests. There are several types:

– Nation missions, which are available from your nation of allegiance (Bastok, Windurst, San d'Oria). You can only take nation missions from your current allegiance, but you can emigrate to another nation and do their story as well.

– Expansion missions, which are story quests that follow the storyline of one of the game's expansions. So far in the private server the Expansion missions for Rise of the Zilart and Chains of Promathia are implemented, along with some of Treasures of Aht Urhgan. As far as I know nothing from Seekers of Adoulin is implemented.

Get your story missions, run around town and get some quests, hook up with other players on the linkshell, explore the massive game world, maybe try your hand at crafting; ultimately what you do is what you want to do. There is no real "point"; FFXI is one of the last 'sandbox' MMORPGs. Take some time to read the wiki and figure out where to get the stuff you want, and above all else, have fun!

It's a shame since the amount of people it looks like you guys have could make for some fun HNM fights.

go to the AH and buy a stack of clusters for 50 or 500k, a stack of clusters is 12 clusters, which is 12 crystals each, 144 in total.

From my experience the only time 6+ people where required was for dynamis wins and I dont think this server will live long enough to see its first relic.

The biggest issue was competing against other people. This server shouldn't have that problem. Thus you should be able to low man all content unhindered as long as you dont have any shitters playing.

ab6df6 No.8685812

Summoner's actually pretty nice. I've played it and it's really easy to level with it, just slow since you need to get your mana back often. If you're partying with someone like a RDM it's easier since they can just cast refresh on you to make it easier on your mana, but the Avatar Perpetuation cost for some summons is still pretty high. Yagudo drinks also help early.

Later in the game though you're actually pretty strong and can keep your summons out for days, but you need a lot of good gear to be effective.

I want to play BLU and I play SMN as well. I'm a masochist who likes the two classes that require the most setup :^)

Most other Avatars (Titan, Garuda, Ifrit, Leviathan, Ramuh, Shiva) you get at level 20. You can get them upwards of 60 by doing the 6-man fights with a party as well, but you can solo their level 20 versions if you read up on some guides and get them 'early'.

Shit's hard tho.

to be fair, with the right job, it's easy to solo the 6-man fights at Lv75 (or higher, as we recently realized is possible.) Or even with the wrong jobs, you can duo them… given the 10x exp rate on this server, I'd say generally the best idea is to get something to Lv75+ and go do the 6-man fights as they're less restricted than the mini-avatar fights… and other people can help you, lol.

I don't really… I mean … sigh.

I mean, I know HE left to go resub to FFXI live, and that's cool – if I had the money I would be doing likewise -right now-. He even invited me to come play with him.

And I even get what you mean. The 75 cap was the peak of the game, both in terms of players and in terms of quality of the content; the post-75 era was the game's decline and the later content is lower quality, I guess. I get it.

I also get that we all want to relive those glory days from our youth. It was a long time ago, a decade, and having something from that time to hold onto is comfy.

I just don't see where it's a big deal on this private server where half the game doesn't work and the other half is implemented wrong. Frankly being able to walk through all the story missions solo is kind of nice because we don't necessarily have the jobs or players to do it.

Again, I totally – I get where you're coming from, but… I dunno. I just don't think your attitude is justified.

i think the Monk ability Boost isn't working.

as you can see in pic related, i do the same exact damage with and without Boost.

now, i know the effect of boost is minimal and that it can be just a coincidence that two attacks did the same damage, but i was also told that Boost stacks with itself and gives successive augments to ATK.

i stacked about 6 Boosts (my atk went from 270 to 717, visible in the Equipment menu) and my damage was within the exact same range as if i had no boost at all, so i believe it only changes the number in the equipment window but does nothing towards increasing the power of your next punch/WS.

tl;dr: Boost is borked

the '/wait 1' gives the game a short pause between executing the lines, if you dont put it there the game tries to execute the lines too quick and it generally glitches out and skips on casting the spell.

Level another class to 70. Seriously. SCH limit break, just like DNC and every class that DOESN'T use Maat for their LB5, isn't scripted at all.

As for the AF, it may be the case that the scripts on butts's server aren't updated, as it looks like Gentle Tiger's script is fine to me.

>>8728776

I haven't had any need to use /wait 1 on all my BRD macros to swap out my equips, but then again I'm using /equipset instead of equipping a specific slot.

c15541 No.8735194

>>8734275

Yeah, Gentle Tiger's scripts work, it's just that one other NPC that isn't at the moment as part of the SCH quest.

So far in the SCH quest line, I've done Downward Helix and previous with all the NPC's and cut scenes working seemingly fine.

I was hoping to bring attention to it because I've put a fair amount of time into this class and to have progress halted by a single dead npc is sad.

To be completely honest, I just want that SCH gear. I really like how it looks and 3/5 parts are locked behind a single dead NPC.

I suppose I could start training my white mage up again in the meantime.

You'd think that, but you'd be wrong.

Just like people who said that Abyssea's EXP (not level increase) was terrible because it eliminated most of the actual leveling process.

In the end, whether you like it or not, it was a necessary change for a game with a dwindling number of people trying to gain EXP at any given time.

Yeah it probably saved the game but that doesn't mean it was a change for the better in terms of gameplay. It was an amputation of a pretty significant part of the game. It was just the necessary one.

i just found out i can play both servers by doing the following:

1) copy xiloader.exe into the POL folder, right next to the "pol.exe"

2) whenever i want to play Comfinity, i add the following lines of code to the <profile> in Windower/settings.xml

<args>–server 23.109.35.216</args>

<executable>xiloader.exe</executable>

likewise, if i don't want to play Comfinity and instead want to play retail, i simply remove the lines of code and launch windower, which boots up POL instead of xiloader and it lets me play fucking retail.

bear in mind this is all done with the latest, legitimately bought game files (Seekers of Adoulin ultimate edition)

however, since either way (for both servers) i had to do a 9 hour POL download, i assume the files are the same, we just don't use the latest stuff because noscripts.
