Latest happenings :

Trails in the Sky the 3rd will be released on PC in English. Target date is early 2017 according to Hatsuu.

https://twitter.com/Hatsuu/status/708383511267282944

Following the announcement, Trails FC and SC are respectively 50% and 30% off on both PSN and PC until March 18.

YS VIII Lacrimosa of Dana's release date in Japan is July 21 on Vita, but not earlier than 2017 on PS4

Trails of Cold Steel II's English version translation is 100% done and editing 66% done. English VA recording is currently ongoing, with planned release on Fall 2016.

Also, PSPfags losing their shit about how the 3rd won't be released on a 10+ years old handheld.

Xanadu Next confirmed for Winter release

7fac7e No.8671691

I got Trails in the Sky about a year ago and couldn't finish it because it was so damn boring, like easily the most boring game I've ever played.

It's sad because it was hyped up to me and I really wanted and tried to like it.

The worst part was that when I told people they said stuff like, "yeah, the game is really boring up until the end but the ending is great", like it was somehow a good thing that you have to suffer through 20 hours of mind numbing tedium for half an hour of mediocre plot escalation that ends on a cliffhanger.

It doesn't really stay boring until the end. Each chapter starts slow, by introducing you to a new location, but towards the end of every chapter the story gains a lot of momentum and something important for the overall story of the game happens.

The cliff hanger happens after almost everything that happens in the game is resolved. It's basically just a preview of SC.

The entire game seems like a preview for SC.

>Naaah

You haven't played them have you. You admitted you haven't played Suikoden. You have nothing to gain from limiting yourself.

I've played all of them and I can honestly say Trails in the Sky is a bad game.

I'll leave now since I've got to grab lunch but you should at least emulate Suikoden 2 before you run your inexperienced mouth of about Trails having good worldbuilding.

At least Ys is good.

407119 No.8671994

>>8671970

You are missing the point. I asked for a FRANCHISE, not for a selected number of games of a different franchise.

If the first games are better but then all the sequels are bad, the franchise goes to shit and it dies, then it's not better. When you say "Game A and B" only instead of the entire franchise, well, you can't prove it's better.

I'm speaking of the Trails franchise (with its 7 games) against all the games of Suikoden, all the games of Grandia, all the games of Langrisser.

Not just Trails FC vs other games.

>you should at least emulate Suikoden 2 before you run your inexperienced mouth of about Trails having good worldbuilding.

>I know better than you, do as I say

Nah, fuck off.

407119 No.8672022

>>8671994

Sorry, I'm a bit sleepy. By dying I mean stuff like the general plotline of Suikoden, which is similar to Trails… but Suikoden will never put an end to all the entire plot like Trails will do. Suikoden has some sort of sacred treasures and shit, right? But they never appeared completely, the franchise is unfinished. That's a big minus for me, and something Trails won't do.

>Langrisser

>good worldbuilding

I feel like you're just confusing this word with story. Langrisser I-II have good pacing and I like how you can choose your path and see different sides of the story, but in terms of worldbuilding, just no. There's no character development, you can't explore anything (no shit it's a TRPG) and dialogue isn't too great. I mostly like Langrisser for the gameplay anyway.

>Grandia 1

I'll give you this one, but again I only think it's superior to TiTS in terms of gameplay (though I'll admit I didn't finish it, didn't click with me too much)

>Suikoden

Top fucking kek, I played the DS one and if it's anything to go by for the rest of the series it's the most boring piece of shit RPG I've ever played. I can't even remember one fucking character because they all were so bland and the gameplay is atrocious mindless button mashing. I dropped it before the last area or something like that because I knew there was no chance it'd get better by this point.

Does Zwei!! have any FMVs or whatever aside from the Falcom logo and the opening? I can't seem to get sound on them and so far I've just ignored it cause the rest of the game is perfectly fine. I'm kind of worried that I'll reach a cutscene and it'll be flat because of the lack of audio. No idea what the cause could be.

Also, is there any downside to keeping the little pet monitor open or is it just free items? My dog found a collar in it but I can't figure out how to put it on her.

The start of some Trails games are a bit harder than the rest of the game, don't worry about it. Also, there's no need to grind, specially thanks to the anti-grinding system. It's better to prepare yourself properly and use the right orbs and equipment than just getting more levels.

Try to do as many quests as possibles. That will be your main source of resources.

Always do the sidequest on the request board first, before progressing with the story. Sidequest have a time limit for how long they last, and if you progress too far into the story, they'll expire. New sidequest sometimes pop up of the request board, be sure to check it when something story related happens.

When you're given the option to say something, try not to pick the stupid answer, or you risk losing out on BP, extra money and sometimes items.

Certain actions give you more or less BP depending on the quest. Like the farm quest you just did. If the monster spotted you when you were trying to sneak up on it, you lose extra BP. Only a few quests have hidden requirement like this though. Don't worry about this too much about BP on your first playthrough though. What matters most is getting to Bracer rank 1 and if you just do everything on the request board, you'll be fine

Try to buy new food whenever you see it. It's usually better then buying normal healing items.

As for levels, there's always the shining poms. They're these little white things with halos, and it only appear in one location in every region and at the beginning of the game, can only be killed with S-Crafts. The first one is all the way west of Rolent, the area before the bridge to the next region, and in the middle of the road. Sometimes it doesn't appear though.

I don't recommend you do this on first playthrough, but certain NPCs give out hidden sidequest and collectible books at certain points in the story. Sometimes the timing is generous, other times it's not. The best way to find everything, is to talk to every NPC when something happens in the story, but like I said, don't bother doing that since it's very time consuming, unless you really like the game.

Check the empty treasure chests.

I'm doing a second playthrough of SC with carryover and noticed that characters don't get their levels reset but they get their experience reset. So for example, my level 60 Schera that I neglected in the first playthrough has about 15k exp, and I literally have no option but to grind on shiny poms to bring it back to the 60k range before I can even think about leveling her up. Meanwhile, Estelle and Joshua are both at level 91 with 15k exp, and get next to nothing from shiny poms even at the final chapter. They require over 80k exp for the next level. I realize that there's no point in leveling Estelle and Joshua any further, but still, what's up with that?

I'm running it in 7 with XP compatibility mode. If I skip the opening FMV, the BGM kicks in, and if I go back to the title screen I get the music there, too. Starting a new game from here gets me sound in the opening FMV.

I'm guessing there's some initialization check that runs once you get into the game proper instead of at startup. Applying the 1.03 patch doesn't fix it, sadly. And the Wave slider is still broken.

Be honest with me, guys. Would it be the worst idea to import Zero no Kiseki Evo? Pretty much the only complaint I've heard is that some of the arrangements aren't as good as the originals, and spoilers in the opening movie (which I can just skip/ignore) - while the rest of the game is much better because of better textures, voice acting, and CGs.

Would it be worth importing if I haven't played Zero no Kiseki before?

It's only speculation, not certain yet if XSEED's test-driving port team collaborations expressly to get games like Ao no Kiseki ready for PC. Japanese console ports to PC are rare coming from the Japanese themselves, with so many PC games coming to console but not the other way 'round unlike in North America and Europe. They haven't had much practice and no milestones bearing down on them forcing improvement, so they stagnated in this area without realizing it would bite them in the ass years later. Japanese games development had plenty of capital and support from after the bubble burst at least until a decade ago, not mirroring the Lost Decade that much.

Falcom, starting with Napishtim, included a detailed configuration menu for their games, and Koei seems to have done their demographic right too. But Falcom was developing only for PC and still took a while to let users with resolutions, AA, control bindings, &c. I wonder if Kusano was the VIP responsible for making Napishtim this different from Zwei!! (moving into full 3D gave them an excuse).

>>8723544

Hopefully when they're well past done with Kiseki. I want nothing less than a Felghana-like experience that expands the plot/side-quests a bit, builds on Esterian lore (culture there before and after Ys, the Roda trees, relationship with Celceta, the Burnedbless village, &c.), and has a gaiden story based around Keith Fact.

>>8723763

They weren't always the best, most talented developers in the J-PC market. Arsys Soft, co-founded by the programmer behind the original Thunder Force, made games like Reviver and Star Cruiser which pushed tech across multiple J-PCs in ways no one could match, and were mechanically/structurally innovative. Reviver has a built-in, modular GUI with adjustable graphics/SFX options and windowing (on top of being closer to a Sierra point-and-click adventure than other ADV games until Tokyo Twilight Busters), while Star Cruiser is mostly polygonal (in 1988 on a PC-88) and combines Elite with period dungeon-crawlers. I'm rambling at this point, lol.

>>8724529

Another great Yamakawa vocal arrange right here. Making songs out of Lord Monarch's themes like this was a great move. Sadly neither it nor Brandish received the arrange albums they deserved (latter got a really disappointing Perfect Collection (like Ys III) + lackluster PCE CD music).

f707e3 No.8729944

As far as I could tell, it only affects the price and the EP gained of unlocking slots (it's more expensive to unlock the same line but you get more EP), and the number of debuff quartz you can fit at the same time (i.e. you cannot have burn quartz + speed debuff quartz on the same line)

48bee7 No.8729979

>>8729862

The lines barely have any meaning.

Some quartz can not be on the same line. This gives characters with more lines an advantage.

Other than that the lines determine the order in which the slots can be unlocked. The further from the core the slots are, the more expensive they are and they give more EP, which is the only advantage strong art users get with the new system.

Also fucking ghosts keep stealing my fucking key. This is a huge pain in the ass because there's only one key in the map and the ghosts steal the key and put it in a random place, so you have to search for it for all eternity.

Anyway, it's amazing for its time. Not just for being the first ARPG, but also, because you can move and destroy the "stones" of the map, so you can completely change the world as you want, absolutely no restrictions. If you wanna give it a try, remember to check a guide first and don't be afraid of moving your house at the very beginning of the game.

Should be possible using FalConvert or a custom tool. The music's already bundled inside the main data files, unlike how with Ys VI Falcom started letting owners access the .ogg files directly in a folder (thus letting them configure the loops and adding new music in).

>>8763229

Toxanadu's not Kiseki-big but it's still the largest action game Falcom's done in terms of text, so XSEED's likelier than other localizers who aren't as up to the task.

80c20a No.8763281

>>8763229

>USGamer described the game's chances of being localized as "extremely strong".[12] In February 2016, Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo, when asked if third party companies were interested in releasing the title in the English in the West, responded that it was "something that we definitely want to make a reality and are currently working towards. Please wait just a bit longer."[2]

Nice.

Do you think there's any chance of XSEED ever localizing the Gagharv trilogy? I'm the one guy in these threads who actually really enjoyed the versions released in the west, but I know that those games deserve a much better translation than what they got.

Let me post, kikemidget.

Just started Cold Steel. Used a new game plus from some guy from Nippon because I hate it when content gets locked.

If it was either the horrible translation or the butchered gameplay I could cope with them, but both is just unplayable for me. I do hope XSEED picks them up someday but I really don't see that happening, both because they have so much on their plate already, and because the PC version is pretty fucking unlikely to attract anyone nowadays. It would need a complete remake and I don't think Falcom is likely to do that anytime soon.

I was planning on doing everything I could before NG+ in Zwei!! but fuck Beelzebub. I'm a few levels away from what is apparently the max and I still have a hard time doing good damage. He spends a lot of time in the air where you can't damage him for shit and when he's on the ground he does this one hit kill move with not much warning and a huge radius. I might as well just wait for whenever I do NG+ cause I have Nayuta no Kiseki on the way and I want to have this game done.

Do any of you know if items carry over? The guide I'm looking at only mentions levels and money.

San Zwei!!

>>8769276

They could make it viable by doing all the games individually, releasing in short succession, and then making a Steam/GOG bundle deal. But the Windows remakes would end up being a prestige project no matter what. My hope is that XSEED's gonna have enough of a financial pillow to do that while releasing more successful games.

Falcom remaking the games will happen, but it might take some time after they recover from completing Kiseki (which, for all we know, could finish but still have spinoffs to keep the fan money flowing). I'd rather see them do a one-off Legend of Heroes games after Kiseki before remaking White Witch, or maybe a re-do of the first two games.

>>8769416

Heroes of Legend hasn't started translating it (they put it, AIZA, and a couple other projects on hold for the moment) and they've barely done any hacking, just exploratory work.

Finally beat Zwei!!. The time on my save says ~50 hours. I wonder how much of that was me sitting in the cutscenes looking up shit in my dictionary.

Overall it was a pretty fun game. The combat was pretty simple and most of the bosses were also pretty simple (especially the final boss which was disappointing) but thanks to the aesthetic, music, puzzles, and the simple joy of dungeon crawling it was still very enjoyable. From what I understand Zwei 2 is a lot better so I can't wait to eventually play that.

Also it turns out items definitely do not carry over so I guess whenever I do my NG+ playthrough I'll have to reload my endgame save and scarf down every piece of food in my chest to get max level.

c1eb56 No.8777387

Are there any good guides in English for Nayuta no Kiseki? I don't want to miss things and I find it easier to follow a guide in English than in Japanese for obvious reasons.

If there's not one, then what's the most complete one in Japanese?

I'm playing titties after you guys recommended it so much.

What's the point of moving around if you can't move and attack? There aren't even backstabs or anything.

Also Estelle's shout gives too small of a bonus and lasts too little. I'm not seeing much strategy in this combat, it plays like a generic JRPG battle system because all of its novelties seem pointless or gimped, it's just attack or magic.

b7dc4c No.8777706

>>8777640

Positioning yourself is important in the big battles, think about Fire Emblem or Advance Wars but more forgiving. Done properly, you can get a few extra turns and avoid attacks, which comes in handy for the hardest battles. In normal it's not that important because it's an easy game.

There's strategy, but for normal difficulty, since it's easy, well, you can just attack and heal. But buffs and debuffs can help quite a lot. Increasing your speed or using wall earth is almost basic for any important combat. And there's also the turn bonuses. Not stealing turns to your enemies to get those bonuses would be a shame.

c1eb56 No.8777828

>>8777640

As much as I love Trails it really did annoy me that you can't choose which way you're facing. I remember there being a damage bonus for attacking from behind so that would have been very useful to have. Did they add it in the later ones? I've only played FC and SC so far.

I have Cold Steel sitting over there and I still don't know if I want to play it yet.

Just moving is a lot faster than attacking (the unit gets much less delay before its next turn), it's useful in a few situations.

Silent Desert grooves well when remixed with Super Mario World instruments. Mystic Quest SPC remix could be god-king.

>>8783025

Sophisticated Fight is still my favorite melody, and probably the most flexible if you wanted to do multiple arrangement styles. Determination of Fight sounds like it'll be my overall favorite though, and Strepitoso competes but doesn't beat either. I have a boner for Takeshita's music at Falcom, of course.

Is Feeling Danger Nearby retained for 3rd or did they make a new track for when your party's in trouble?

c607de No.8787257

I love sophisticated fight. Just hearing the beginning makes me happy. I didn't like strepisto fight that much, but vice-versa I prefered all the boss tracks of SC to those of FC that I always found pretty weak.

Do the Evolution versions of Zero and Ao allow you to switch the music back? Whenever I get around to those games I'm thinking I'll go with those because of the voice acting but since I've heard people say the music is worse I'm less sure I should get it over the PSP versions (although for Zero I might go for the PC version over the PSP version).
