Drakengard (the first game) and the Timesplitters games (the PS2 versions anyhow; Gamecube version of Future Perfect is like twice the price at $40+) were still pretty cheap last I looked. So I have a Wii that I softmodded years ago and kind of messed up a bit. It's been years since I've done anything with it and what little I remember about Wii hacking is probably outdated anyway.

I region modded it to Japanese, have no idea what IOSs I have installed, and it boots to a black screen unless I hold reset while it's booting and then choose system menu from the priiloader menu. Is it possible to salvage this and get it running the latest homebrew/hacks and such? Or should I restore from that NAND backup that I probably have lying around somewhere and start the process from the beginning?

>>8692500

SotC emulation is one of the hardest, if you don't have a good CPU and as lot of patience you simply won't be able to run the game at a playable state.

Post PC specs and PCSX2 settings as reference, we can't magically offer advice to solve the problem without any background.

>>8694286

>PS3 version is far superior for the framerate alone.

The HD collection can be played just fine but it's upscaled and has FPS drops here and there(i own the game), definitely the best choice for toaster race though.

Anyone with a decent PC can emulate the game at true 1080p 50-60FPS, i can do it with my i3-6100 3.7ghz.

The slowdowns on the video are sadly part of the game engine itself and can't be removed as of now, maybe someone will care enough to design a specific hack for it in the future.

>>8694325

Yes, emulation quality is all about CPU power, all you need from a vidcard is newest OpenGL support and a decent amount of VRAM to be able to render the game at higher resolutions and to add filters.

b9bb16 No.8694742

>>8694688

What i meant is that the emulation itself is quite straightfoward on the PSP because there's no multicore hell.

On a multicore system, the games have a much harsher timing accuracy requirements because CPU 1 requires CPU 2 to have completed the task etc.., but as PSP have only one core, you have a lot more of leeway which translates to a faster core overall.

e9a29c No.8694856

>>8694742

That's true, also the rumor is that the people behind PPSSPP worked for Sony at some point, they somehow have a lot of hardware/software documentation that allowed them to clean and optimize the emulator in such a short amount of time.

I'm inclined to believe this because it takes years to properly reverse engineer a console and the PPSSPP went from decent to Dolphin tier in such a short span.

b9bb16 No.8694925

>>8694856

The last case is quite dodgy and hidden if true, because you can't legally do an emulator using official technical documentation of the company.

You know that with USB Loader GX you can just go to the options for the specific game and make it start as a Japanese game right? Thats how you get fan translations to work and playing games in original japanese. Hell you can change it to whichever language you want as long as its supported.

>Dolphin

Depends on your rig really. For maximum confiness and cheapness, a modded wii is excellent since you can use it as an emulation box. I use Dolphin when I want to play certain games in higher resolution or want to fuck around with the control pad. For example, playing Super Mario Strikers Charged with a DS4 is extremely comfy. I'd say they're two different experiences despite both of them being "playing videogames".

>compatibility

Dolphin has excellent compatibility, for some games though you still need the waggling, and Dolphin doesn't do the Wii motion plus.

b9bb16 No.8708192

Project 64 is not heavy, it is an "not emulator" so to speak.

The nintendo 64 system have two CPUs, the main one and the coprocessor DSP thing.

The main one is a very known and documented R4000 family CPU, so emulating it is a piece of cake, and all emulators obviously emulate this one.

But then there is the coprocessor. It is a chip made specifically for the nintendo 64 system, and its not only very undocumented (even for the developers back then), but horrible to code for, due having a program size limit of 4KB, being a 128bit SIMD (on the 8x16bit configuration) beast, having no debug tools whatsoever, AND nintendo forbidding the developers from using 16bit precision math on it, forcing you to use 32bit emulated math.

But as it was awful to code for, most developers used one of the 10 or so programs written for it, so what most emulators did was instead of emulating the coprocessor, they choose to simply impersonate the program running on the coprocessor.

But this method fails if the game abuse of the original program bugs, or if the developer slightly tweaked the code, or went factor 5 insane and redid the whole thing from scratch.

And the final result is that the emulator ends being great for the most popular games like Zelda, mario, pokemon, but anything else gets the shaft.

Sadly a good intel CPU and a decent Nvidia GPU.

An intel CPU will let you run the majority of games full speed and can fall back to software mode on some other where HW mode is too broken, Zen might change that soonish though so if you can wait for it I'd suggest you do, at worst you'll get something that's on par with 3rd gen core iX which should be enough in most cases especially if there is 6-8 core models since SW mode can use as much as 30 cores (although the multithreading overhead makes 12+ cores a waste)

An Nvidia GPU because AMD and intel GPU have shit OGL support and the only plugin worth using anymore or that will see any progress is the OGL one, DX12 is highly unlikely (maye gabest will grace us with his presence once more and leave an half finished renderer) and Vulkan is a big maybe for now but if either of those happens and the renderer is good then AMD would become a better choice.

Honestly a softmodded PS2 seems like the better choice most of the time but if you already have both of those things then yeah go for it some game emulate very well and look much better on PCSX2, do not not do a build with the sole purpose of emulating PS2 you will spend a ridiculous amount of money for something that really isn't worth it.

Hilariously both the CPU and GPU requirements for Dolphin are much lower in general than PCSX2 despite the former emulating much more powerful hardware.

While there are still quite a few PCSX2 games I can't run fullspeed on my i5-2500 I can't think of a single one I can't on Dolphin.

The NGC/Wii architecture is vastly simpler than the PS2 architecture (the PS2 is very close in terms of architecture to an N64 except way less retarded) which is why it's more demanding.

Also to note that neither PCSX2 or Dolphin are really that accurate (that doesn't mean they can't play a lot of games but they realistically aren't on the same level as most current 5th gen and down emulator excluding N64 obviously), a very accurate emulator for either of those would be ridiculously demanding,

I mean reasonably you can toss this all together for $700-1000. If you want to go cheaper do an AMD build. An FX-8350 for a CPU, and an nVidea 750 Ti. Otherwise same spec recommendations, just you'll have to purchase a 620W for sure with AMD.

>What's a good midrange (600-900) PC build for emulation?

This is really subjective if you don't tell us what exactly are you going to emulate and in what resolution are you expecting to do it.

Building a PC is not a a good idea right now because we are getting new technologies later this year like CPU's with 8 cores+multi-threading and even if the new CPU's are too expensive you are going to see current top of the line CPU's lowering their prices to be able to compete with the new stuff.

Honestly a core i3 or i5 is more than enough to emulate shit at 1080p, my friend has a humble build that uses a i3 6100 proc and a GTX 960 and he can emulate PCSX2, Dolphin, PPSSPP, etc. and play modern games at 1080p without problems.

My advice is to make a humble Intel+Nvidia build for emulation right now for like $400ish and save all the money you can to buy a new tech high-end PC next year.

>>8756720

>If you want to go cheaper do an AMD build. An FX-8350 for a CPU

As a AMDfag i can tell you AMD CPU's are shit for emulation(old OC phenom black being the exception) emulators offer way better support for Intel CPU's and they are just a couple bucks more expensive.

My friend has a OC Phenom Black x6 4.3ghz and it performs just as good as a top i3-entry i5 emulation wise.

As of now Intel CPU's are simply better single core wise and the hyper-threading makes a huge impact on emulation, specially on things like Dolphin.

Pascal looks promising and it may end up being if not better at least on par with new Intel CPU's emulation wise, but as now Intel is the way to go for emulation.

Intel has some program that's supposed to help offload some parts to the RAM I believe. Well it also causes some internal issues. It will also send data back to Intel for you. Apparently AMD has the same type of thing. Doesn't do the same thing, but it's for data management or some such. So I'm wary about Intel products passed 2014, and Pascal Is that released next year, or later this year? will have something akin to what Intel has.

>Knowing what the loads will be.

You can't do this reasonably for all games. MY 8320 has run most games in PCSX2 just fine, and Dolphin has slowdowns occasionally, but it's not that bad. Rendering textures is down to GPU I believe. jpcsp came first and laid a lot of the ground work for them even if it is an awful java-based emulator that has literally no point existing now.

>Slow down there buddy. Do you have access to NASA computers?

No I don't but it should be able to run OK on a 4.5GHZ 8230 and 290. At least I hope so.

I might as well give it a shot this weekend with Dreadlock seeing as sold my orginial copy.

Outside of the first one and the PSP ports forget about R&C on PCSX2, especially with an AMD CPU

2, 3 and deadlocked are particularly brutal, even my i7 can't handle them at more than 45fps most of the time (unless I mess with the VU thing or use the cheat that locks the game in 30fps mode internally)

That… sounds like a pretty good workaround for those really demanding games. I don't suppose one exists for Zone of the Enders 2?

You can enable frame skipping in the core video settings, but it might cause graphical issues.

4 was a lot more demanding than 5 and 0, with that hardware you're likely to end up having to skip it.

There were some issues running 4 in hardware mode too, that I remember.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City still kicks ass. No mods, but enabling widescreen and 1080p still made this game looks so fucking fantastic.

you don't need to emulate that, although the original xhox version is far better than all the other releases.

scarface the world is yours is essentially the vice city sequel we never got.

I managed to get hold of an old school CRT with almost no use. I plugged my nintendo wii to it and i'm emulatan the mega drive so i can play co-op games with my brother.

Thank fuck for libretro they still actively update and improve the wii port of their emulators, at some point i just assumed they have given up but now i went to their website and got 6 years worth of improvements

Are there any "party games" you guys would recommend? Some shit I can play with a friend, or several friends when they are over?

So far we only play SFIV (pc version) and every once in a while some smash bros.

Persona 4 on PCSX2.

Just wish I could sit down and play it without interruptions. Need to clear Naoto's dungeon.

Having a blast with it even with the fact that it is a lot easier compared to Persona 3 FES.

Played Mortal Kombat on MAME yesterday.

Was going to play on Arcade Kollection, but thanks to game for windows profile login updates and error messages it was faster to download mame, the roms, and configure the pad, than reach to the title screen on the Steam version.

Anything 5th gen (PS1, N64 and Saturn) or lower should be fine. There's probably a good many PS2 and Gamecube games you can run fullspeed too. Get the latest version of PCSX2 or Dolphin and download a game. It won't cost you anything to try.

Thank you anon.

So I should aim for less demanding PS2/GC games, right? Would something like Yakuza or Crash Wrath of Cortex work? I'm downloading Yakuza as we speak but this shit takes time on my slow-ass internet.

f7965e No.8803122

>>8802652

Hmm Yakuza is one of the more demanding PCSX2 games to emulate, I'm not sure if you'll have much luck there.

Try Final Fantasy X or either of the Kingdom Hearts games, those should definitely run at fullspeed.

I don't know about Crash Wrath of Cortex.

377dc0 No.8803549

>>8803122

Yeah, found out the hard way. Oh well - guess that just gives me an incentive to upgrade this toaster as soon as I stop being a poorfag.

Just in case, Crash Wrath of Cortex runs at 88% speed in my toaster, in case any other anon with a toaster wants to give that game a shot. I'm sure I could get it to run faster if I swapped some plugins or messed with the settings but I'm not sure if I'm willing to do that right now.

Thanks for your help!
