Give me a reason why any character shouldn't level fighter from 1-200, you can't get HP from items, you get roughly equal def/mdef from leveling than items, and your attack and magic attack from leveling are negligible compared to what you get from items.
Even for a sorcerer pawn, you get 258 matk from only fighter and 798 from sorcerer, a difference of 500 isn't that important compared to the 2500 HP and 600 defense difference. The best armor in the game gives you 700 armor so I'd say it's very significant while the best staff gives you 1800 matk.

I'd like to see you still sing that tune when you run out of conqueror's periapts.
If your attack isn't high enough to break an enemy's defense threshold, you're going to be doing jack shit to them. So I'd say that extra 380 attack you get from leveling Assassin 10-200 matters a lot more than you think.

Since this is your first playthrough, I'd suggest getting a decent number of wakestones (thirty or so), handing in enough for the quest, and finishing the game. Bitterblack Isle is great but story-wise it makes more sense if you've finished the game at least once.
If the idea of replaying the game bothers you, just know that you can get back to where you currently are very quickly if you skip side quests you've already done the first time around.

It was hard, but I managed it! My ranger pawn is basically unstoppable! And having her slowing bosses with torpor, tarring giant undeads, and hitting fully charged Great Gamble with more than 4000 of stamina… So good! But, when you get to level 200, your pawns are not hired anymore.
If anyone wants, look for Cyssa on the pawn list, I'm still trying to give her a 100% bestiary, but I'm close!

You can get HP from items. Master Rings roll at 350-500 HP I believe. Savior rings award 500HP/500ST.
The thing you're missing though is that base defense is about twice as effective compared to defense gained from items when calculating damage done to player. You're right, though. Any character/pawn should have some focus on on HP/pdef. My sorc isn't even decked out in BBI3 armor and she eats hits like a champ.

Doesn't it break your immersion when that same goblin that you've killed since level 1 is now level 40? When I level up, I expect to face stronger enemies, not the same old enemies with higher stats. Goblins should be pathetic, and if you don't want to waste your time killing goblins over and over again you can use your eternal ferrystone to move to more challenging mobs, or just run past the goblins.
I also like that without level scaling you can fight mobs that are way stronger than you. It's fun to try to kill really big things at the lowest level possible.

I'm not saying every enemy should be the same level as you and I guess level scaling is kind of the wrong choice of words. There's clearly stronger versions of standard skeletons and bandits that you encounter throughout the game and it'd probably mix things up a bit if they started mixing in with the regular enemies you encounter as you progress throughout the story. Same goes for bigger monsters such as ogres and cyclops.
Eventually you get to the point where they just become a total joke to fight and go down in like 2-3 minutes. There's a lot more interesting big enemies in the game and like with the lesser enemies, it'd probably make things more interesting if they became more prevalent in the world as you go along.

Problem with mixing up how you fight them is that they get to the point where you can't really mix up how you fight them because either you or your pawns kill them in half a second. Hence the reason why it'd be nice to see the tougher versions of the standard enemies thrown into the mix as you progress.
When you're actually evading attacks and using various combinations of your special abilities the game's fun and tense. Timing a hindsight slash perfectly so you hit them for a shit ton of damage and go into a split second slo-mo is satisfying as fuck but you don't really have as much opportunity to pull it off against lesser enemies because again, dead in 1-2 hits.

Griffin was my favorite fight so far. Grabbing on to it while it's taking off and just wailing on it while it's flying like 20 feet up to bring it crashing back down is fucking awesome. Fighting golems is pretty fun too although the weak point on their palm seems like kind of a bitch to hit.
Also my gear so far. Mostly sticking to lighter stuff like a grand surcoat over armor to keep my weight down so I can conserve more stamina.

So I was doing the one mission where I need to kill the Cockatrice at Soulflayer canyon and I kept experience the same problem where my retarded pawns would actually REFUSE to to use the secret softeners I gave them when they were being petrified by the fucking cockheads. At first I thought they fell off a cliff or died or something during the battle, but when I reloaded and tried it again I actually watched the retards just freeze. I even removed then readded a SS from their inventory and they still didn't use it.
Am I doing something wrong here, or can the pawns actually not use restoratives like that during combat? I know they can burn through mithridae and clothes at breakneck speed OUT of combat, but for fucks sake when I actually need them they go full braindead.

For petrification, there's a point in the process where they can't use Secret Softener and need someone to use Cockatrice Liquor or Voidspell. I think it was when grey patches appear on their body they can't use curatives.
