I never seen anyone talk about this, probably because it's an unfinished game you can only buy directly from the dev.
It's essentially a single layer sci-fi western Dwarf Fortress clone with the addition of cover mechanics similar to CoH/DoW.
Looks quiet similar to Prison Architect and has a some of the same mistakes, like a shallow research tree that might as well not be there and you feel like you've seen everything very quickly.
There's a lot of items but you're stuck being able to craft only shitty ones and have to trade for everything advanced like cybernetic prostheses or even guns.
Was gonna gonna drop it until I looked at the mods and there's a modpack called Hardcore SK that actually fixes most of these issues, mainly by the addiction of more complex resource chains.
If no one wants to talk about it we can talk about Dwarf Fortress and similar games in general.
What other games like that can you recommend?

I don't think it's a matter of "they shouldn't EVER be allowed to charge!" and more a question of "what made them think this was a good idea?"
Dwarf Fortress is the mechanically-superior game, and it's free. All Rimworld really has over DF at the moment is more accessible gameplay, and they think that's worth the $30 price tag?
As a consumer, you're essentially just paying for a better GUI, and trading in a huge amount of depth for the privilege.
I can't imagine the overlap between "want's to play a complex colony management game" and "wants to immediately jump in with no prior learning needed" is particularly large.
In fact, given how many of these types of game have sprung up over the past 5 years, only to wither, I can guarantee you the overlap is fairly small.
The number one complaint I've seen levied against all of these pay-money-for-a-slightly-better-interface management games is "why should I play this when DF has more content and is free?"
The problem is that, essentially, we have a group of developers out there that want to have their cake and eat it - they want to profit off of the niche Dwarf Fortress has carved out without investing nearly as much effort.
Should Rimworld exist? Yes. Should they be allowed to make a profit off of it? Yes. Should people that want a game with DF levels of complexity give them $30? Probably not.
253faa No.8744024
Good game but takes way too long between updates. Even DF updates faster.
Combat is nightmare hard, I always get wiped out by the first mechanized or sometimes raiding parties. It seems like you have to get a sniper rifle and abuse it as fast as you can or doom stack turrets fucking everywhere.
Building walls does nothing except temporary cover. I wouldn't even bother putting a full wall around my base. Maybe like this pattern I . I . I . I for the cover bonus.
Except on maybe a tundra base where it's worth building double walls to keep the temperature warm.
253faa No.8744041
The medieval weapons are actually pretty good. The longbow can be quite effective and plasteel / steel longswords usually kill in two hits. If you can attack a raider with a gun you have a guaranteed kill since they only use their fists.
Also melee equipped troops with shields are really useful for reducing your casualties and drawing fire away from your snipers.

07d008 No.8745477
I like it but it becomes frustrating to see the unrealized potential. Medical procedures are something that I really enjoy but the dev doesn't seem to care and puts in stupid shit. Mods save it.
The game is also much more fun if you concentrate on base and character building instead of pursuing the actual goal of building a spaceship and getting off the planet.

Nigger there is no base.
You cut down trees, build a wall in case someone has to go back. Then you set up the basic workshops and set them to building enough beds, a crossbow and some bolts.
Then you dig down 2 levels, uppermost for starting farming, the one lower for housing.
Then dig another level down and use that for storage. This is the point where you deconstruct the wagon for parts.
Then dig another level down and transfer your workshops underground.
Thats it.

If I can remember correctly, the main developer even created a thread on his forum dedicated to which e-celebs he should mail the game to. In comparison to DF, it has a much better UI (I'm not talking graphics here, but the ability to use mouse instead of typing everything is pretty neat, and the various menus are much easier to navigate through), and the injuries system is cool too. The main issue was the absense of mid and late game content and the inability to get out of the starting field, as well as the lack of possible interaction with outside world. its immensely fucking tedious
mods are 90% of the game
equipment degrades faster than you make the money to buy it, and you have to individually equip every weapon and every piece of armor.
raids are even more tedious than dwarf fort with its broken military
your settlement will get destroyed out of nowhere if you dont very carefully meter out what you choose to build and when
farms are worthless
invasions are at least interesting mechanically, sometimes they charge into your facility, sometimes they use drop pods to get into unroofed areas, sometimes they set up a mortar position to bomb you from afar.
3 starting settlers is not enough, settlers are far too valuable and take up far too much room
settlers very easily become suicidally depressed from heat or cold turning the game into micro hell
power is always open to destruction from invaders because they must be built outside
thats all I care to write about

RimWorld is quite fun but limited. I really just love the atmosphere, and since it looks so much nicer than DF it's a comfy game. I used the mod that lets you create custom colonists to allow myself to start with 5 ubermensch and play on harder difficulties. I know it's kinda casual but RimWorld is pretty casual in general.
On an unrelated note, I was playing DF for about 7 hours last night without saving and then it crashed. Finally after nearly a decade realized I can set it to autosave… Fuck. It was a really fun fortress too, I had an insane defense setup from outside threats but had a few unfortunate moods that resulted in berserk->tantrum spirals. Good luck having anything higher then tilesets in graphics for DF, the sheer number of things being kept track of and controlled in the game means that anything higher then that would have to be designed to be a simulator of reality like biology for example.
Toady making the world even bigger and constant is going to make that even more intensive.
