BioShock is what happens when you have very, very strong designers but lackluster execution in most other departments. There was so much potential in that series but what really mattered (gameplay), was not great.

The visual designs and attempt to do something new in terms of setting ended up being really well-executed (fucking art deco in a videogame, Columbia was a nice city too), but the gameplay was shallow and empty (infinite has the most lacking gunplay around). Mechanical depth (proper RPG mechanics, better gunplay, more weapons, not the cheap stat boosts), along with an engine change was all the game really needed.

If the right people worked on it, it would have been GOAT. Keep the designers, demote Levine, use Frostbite instead of Unreal, let another company handle gameplay (Monolith would have done well if they had assistance with RPG mechanics).

This so much. The sense of progression in that game was so excellent. The game started and you really felt like an out of date prototype for a Big Daddy. Splicers could take you out with no problem, and other Big Daddys were deadly. By the end, though, it was so satisfying to be able to take out a Big Daddy with a single Freeze/Drill combo attack. That end confrontation with about 30 of them was bad ass.

Sure, the story wasn't good, but the first one's story wasn't that great either, honestly. I think it was more of the unique setting that had most people enthralled. Obviously, that was not as exciting in the sequel.

I don't really mind the science and the butchered, crude interpretation of quantum physics because they were going for a character-centric story like Looper or Inception. The main problem with the game's story is that the characters are so unrealistic and forgettable that it's impossible to feel any connection to them. I mean, imagine being Ken Levine, going in the street and someone says "Hey, you're the guy that made that game with the chick everyone wants to bone!". It's not exactly a very proud achievement. Imagine being at some GameAwards show, collecting a prize for the game and looking at the audience, knowing fully well that 2/3 of them only like your game because they can fap to a character in it.

And shame isn't the only problem. They wanted to tell a story about class struggles and time traveling. They had a ton of other characters and stuff to talk about. But a few months later, nobody talks about nothing but Elizabeth, specifically how much they want to bone her. She got more coverage (in many ways) then the game that featured her. Elizabeth killed Bioshock Infinite.

And all because they made her high octane fap fuel, instead of an interesting character like most people were expecting to find.

A reverse Oedipus situation would be great as well, as it would continue to raise moral issues the the game has you struggle with all along.

In all the games they could have made it much more interesting and ambiguous. Instead of every enemy being comically villainous and insane, they could have gone another route. I remember being fairly stealthy in the first game, and if the AI did things other than scrape wrenches along the ground loudly and yell about killing people, it could have made for a much better feeling in the game.

The only morally ambiguous thing in the game were the little sisters, and that was so ham-fisted that it was ridiculous. A real dark story out of the games would have made for a really excellent story experience, especially if all the retarded stuff in the story was dropped.

I enjoyed Bioshock 1 at the time but I could see why some people would find it bad. Weapons don't handle very well and some feel super anemic late game even with full upgrades, balance between plasmids is almost nonexistant with some like shock being strictly better than others, hacking minigame is flowbreaking lel and not interesting or enjoyable, not a lot of enemy variety, plot mostly disappears in the last quarter, and I'm certain I could come up with more if I had played the game more recently than almost a decade ago.

Many people say the RPG elements are dumbed down. I've never played System Shock, so can you tell me how they're different and how Bioshock fails on this front?

I personally didn't like the Vita chamber system since it lessens the tension when you can just wake up 20 feet away and continue shooting bees at little to no detriment to the player. Given such a creepy setting there should be a bigger penalty for dying.

I still haven't gotten around to playing System Shock but I'm under the impression your character had RPG style stats affecting all the shit you could do so you could have techy or shooty characters instead of how in Bioshock you're pretty much as good at everything every playthrough because you can just swap plasmids in and out at any point and the only irreversible decisions were what plasmids you upgraded and you got enough adam to do all the good ones anyway.

What probably woulda given a good sense of RPG ism is if you couldn't swap out one tonic for another. Or that's probably a dumb idea. I'm not entirely sure, now that I think about it. Speaking of adam, I really didn't like the moral choice system in this game. They tried to give it some sort of weight by getting more adam out of it to buy more plasmids, but it's not like there was every a situation where I really needed the adam and had to contemplate murder over it. It basically boils down to Good Choice Bad Choice, and I never liked that presentation in video games since it's not really letting the player immerse themselves more than it is just them choosing which ending they want to see first.

But the game never really made great use of that, or at least, I don't think any player did when they have rocket launchers and electric shotguns. Of course, this brings back to the vita chamber thing. Why set traps when if you die you just go back 20 feet?

I remember Bioshock 2 being a little differently shown off too–I remember someone saying how the splicers would react to you in different ways if one's left they'll run or something, since you're a 9ft tall submarine robot man. That never happened, it was just someone trying to punch me to death even though I killed all of his friends with lightning hands.

The reason why people don't like BioShock is because they were expecting the same gameplay as System Shock and didn't get it. The game has its flaws (most of which are fixed in 2), but it focuses more on being a run and gun FPS than an RPG and that triggers people.
