505511 No.8762986

I made one of these threads after finishing the first Persona, so I may as well make another one of them.

I decided it was time to try the Persona series after ignoring it for years. I liked the first one, it was great, especially the music (played the Japanese PSX version). I just played the PSP versions of Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment.

These two games were really hyped up, pretty much just for the story. The story was definitely interesting, especially in Innocent Sin, I thought the cast really worked well together too. It was really damn easy too. I basically just Fusion Skilled my way through the game.

A lot of people seem to really like Eternal Punishment, though I wasn't as thrilled by it. I think it's because, as far as the story goes, anyone who played IS would pretty much know what was going on, I didn't expect to have to chase after some idiot who was being tricked into repeating the events of IS for most of the game. If I hadn't played IS I think I would have been much more interested in it. The dungeons sucked because the random battle rate was insane.

Which of the two do you prefer? What do you think about the old games compared to Persona 3 and 4? I've heard Persona 3 is where the series changes quite a bit, and it sounds like I'll either love it, like it, or hate it. I'll play Persona 3: FES in a bit. The Persona 2s already felt like they were lacking something the first game had, I'm not sure what. I think part of it is that in the first game shit just got fucked up all of a sudden, In the Persona 2s it was more just strange things going on for awhile until things got really fucked up toward the end. It also didn't help that people just ignored demons in Persona 2. The guy running Giga Macho didn't seem terribly perturbed by me fighting demons 15 feet away from him.

Another thing about EP is the villain. He didn't seem quite the same in EP as he did in IS. You really got the impression that he was a master puppeteer in IS, and even after pounding him, he doesn't even seem out of breath. In EP he just seemed like more of a bastard than anything and lost his shit after getting a beat down.

Also, why was Philemon sort of phasing in and out when you first see him in EP? I thought they'd explain this, but if they did, I missed it.

I'm not really totally sure of my thoughts on EP yet. It was alright, but kinda "meh". There was also some really annoying design aspects, like the pitfalls in the Undersea Ruins that dropped you nearly back to the beginning of the dungeon. Without save scumming or Estoma that'd be hell. Also, IS just felt like it was a good wrap up, EP felt unnecessary, though it was satisfying to slap Nyarlathotep's shit again. Though with other Tatsuya consigned to a doomed world… that's worse than just having his memory wiped.

Speaking of him, how is the new scenario for the PSP version? I just remembered it, I haven't played it. Not sure if I will this time or not, it doesn't sound terribly interesting.

Anyway, TL;DR: Persona thread

Oh yeah, and Maya not talking at all (aside from some stuff in battle) was one of the worst things about Eternal Punishment.

You pretty much nailed it. These few things really should've been handled better. No doubt about it. Also, I don't like what they did with Eriko.

>I made one of these threads after finishing the first Persona

Oh yeah, I totally remember that. Nice to see you again.

As I said back then, I love the original triology. It was an excellent ride despite the few flaws. Don't expect any of that greatness in the later games. But give them a shot anyway.

What did the do with her? I took Nanjo with me, so I didn't see her all that much.

I'm basically expecting totally different games that I hope I'll have fun with. I'll play some of the other SMT games later on anyway. Probably main series first, though everyone seems to like Digital Devil Saga and Nocturne as well.

Well, in P1, she liked the protag, and that's fine. But P2 kind of bloated her character around that without much else.

Granted, she was never really deep but I think they could've done so much better with her.

Also, I don't like her P2 design, but maybe that's just me.

She's still a mile or two better than mostly any character in P3/P4, although Adachi was surprisingly good.

Yeah I wasn't really fond of her Persona 2 look. I wasn't a big fan of any of the P1 character's looks in Persona 2, though Nanjo would be fine if he wasn't constantly wearing that helmet.

Well sonny, only people with certain aptitudes can see demons, P2 follows Devil Summoner rules and that's why Tamaki is one and appears every now and then. It's just with the rumors fucking everyone's shit up that certain people are able to see them, and then suddenly the whole town can see them. Rumors are great.

That's make since if everyone in the first game weren't freaking out over demons invading the city. You'd think high school students would also get curious when Eikichi and his new gang suddenly start fighting what appears to be nothing at all.

Haven't played the PSP version, not more than a few minutes anyway, but the original version had a great soundtrack, the PSP version's isn't quite as good (I've listened to the new songs on Youtube and watched some videos). I mean, the original version had some really good songs. The Snow Queen's theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzHgXFk6V20) is a good example, but you should really listen to the whole soundtrack. The new music just isn't nearly as good and some of it's J-popy, which doesn't doesn't fit.

Aside from the music, it sounds like it's got some nice improvements. If you can't read Japanese, it's really your only choice as the localization for the PSX version was absolutely horrible. If you can read Nip then choose between better music and a somewhat nicer experience.

Basically, Hashino's team mostly do whatever they feel like. There are some minor continuity nods in P3, but for the most part it feels like a reboot. You'll find little to no consistency with the old triology in P3/P4, but that's probably for the best.

Just repeating what I've heard. I can't say for sure yet as I haven't played the game at all. But yeah, I have no idea, I'm a Persona newbie and an SMT newbie.

Persona 4 tied it in with the Shadow selves that Nyarlathotep used to employ, but 3 basically said "they just happen." Also for no apparent reasons, most people only get one Persona at a time, completely destroying the purpose of the metaphor.

Interestingly, in P3 and P4 you don't see people accessing their Personas in the "real world" (this is not 100% true but I'm trying to avoid spoilers).

There's more of a dichotomy between "regular life" and "where Shadows live", although both realms affect each other.

It's explained but very bad that they needed a whole new release of the game to add more to it.

It's brought up 1 time offhandedly in 3 that everyone in 3 who has a persona has had to deal with death in some form like losing a loved one or something of the like and that's also why they need the evoker to re summon them by reminding them of death or something like that.

Answer then shows you the moment they get the purseowners and then takes time to explain it more but it's still dumb.
