A worthless language only a fool would spend thousands of hours of his life to learn to hear the sheer awkwardness of Japanese animation firsthand, teenage Japanese women pretending to be children, blatant and cringeworthy "fanservice," and a dying culture. Go learn a useful language like Spanish or Mandarin instead.

Everything about it says it should be terrible: It's a licensed game for a shameless toy commercial property that failed horribly. Yet despite all this Noise (yes, the Custom Robo creators) managed to make an entertaining little mon based jRPG with entertaining characters plus some fun and unique twists on the ATB formula.

It might be because I just got used to this game's particular vocabulary but near the end I could definitely tell I was reading faster. I still need to work on my comprehension though cause while i got the gist of things I still felt like I missed some nuances.

That would be true if it weren't for how marketing works. Kotaku and its ilk spent weeks telling people the only changes to Fates were sexual related things that only a pedophile would defend. What did retards do? They listened and believed so hard that Fates broke sales records for the FE series in the west. There are even people so mind bogglingly brain dead that they understand the issues with Fates and still say they'll buy it anyway. Voting with our wallet doesn't work when we're a tiny minority.

They don't need to remember because they use the Asian version of spellcheck. They write the word phonetically and the computer supplies the kanji. For real.
I guess it's a good thing in a way, because otherwise they would also forget how to read them. Ironically this might actually save kanji from disappearing, since before the age of computers the young were writing increasingly many words phonetically instead of using Chinese.

It's going to depend greatly on your level of immersion. If you're going to be on some kind of program to teach English in Japan or something like that, you're unlikely to learn much of anything. A friend of my sister's did one of those programs and came back after a year without knowing a word of the language.
On the other hand, if you're there on your own or as part of a decent language program, you'll learn fast because you'll be using it in every aspect of your daily life. I went that route for two years. Within six months, I was playing video games in Japanese and watching anime without subtitles at a level of "understand more than just the gist of it" level. After a year, I was doing those things with very few instances where I needed to look up a kanji or word. Your mileage may vary.

How much is difficult learning Japanese?
I would like to start for my entertainment and business, since I already work for a Japanese company, my career could benefit from this (yeah I'm a wannabe salariman).

What kind of retention do you guys realistically shoot for in anki reviews?
I'm currently getting about 10-15% wrong, and wondering if I should stop introducing new cards and just do double reviews for a couple weeks.

I have what is probably a super retarded question, but how do I study kanji? It seems like they have several different spellings and meanings. How do you tell when to use which one?
b149c4 No.8794908

You study vocabulary, and then eventually you will intuitively know when to use which reading.

No. Katakana is used for foreign loan words like hamburger, television, ect. Words made up for a specific game/movie/book/whatever are free to use whichever writing system they want.

If you haven't already, first you learn hiragana and katakana. After that I recommend you learn all of the kanji meanings in Heisig's Remember the Kanji, which will help you to recognize kanji easier later on. Then start with grammar/vocab while practicing reading with games/manga.
There is no one right way to learn, so you don't have to follow my advice exactly, but you must learn hiragana and katakana before anything else.

I did a fullstop on new cards when I foolishly had a rep limit of 200 and my true reps piled up to over 1000. You should adjust the amount of new cards so your reps stay in a range you are willing to do every day, but definitely do all your reps every day.
Currently I'm going at 25 new cards with about 10% of reps wrong, and my mature cards are increasing.

Yeah I've been practicing that, and I'm finally feeling confident in my ability with those. I can actually read basic twitter conversations that don't use kanji. I still have to look up what I'm reading even means, but I can read it.

It's also sometimes used with Japanese words for emphasis or effect or something. When I played Zwei!!, when the dragons talked everything that would be hiragana was katakana. Even the okurigana was in katakana.

MMOs? Also I remember seeing a few Chinese PC RPGs that got localized to Japan by Falcom back in the day which looked interesting. I'd still just play them in Japanese though.
Man, I'm learning Japanese partly to play games in their original language so it'll be a weird day when I play something localized into Japanese.
Now that I think about it, it might be fun to see how some of the translations for western games are. I remember seeing The Witcher 3 got the full treatment with voice acting and everything.

Looking at this thread gives me confidence because I know it's filled with people who, at the core of it, are learning for fun and not because it'll get you a job. The only reason anyone should learn a language is because you want to. And we all want to, right?
Don't think that learning Japanese is a useless language that would be limited to just vidya and cartoons. There's 130 million native speakers, and Japan is the third largest economy in the world. If you wanted to travel there for tourism, or go full on Ken-sama and live there, learning the native language would be a good idea. We all enjoy Japan's "cultural exports" anyway. Even disregarding travel, speaking another language is a great way to make >friends and meet people in real life.
Same thing with any language. If you want to learn Italian simply because you enjoy Italy's history, you're gonna have an easier time. If you treat it like a job it'll be as hard as one. I have found that people who try to learn a language just because they think it'll look good on their resume don't retain it as well. I know people that have studied Chinese for five years and can only say their name, occupation, and a few canned sentences confidently. And loads of you are better than that.
So yeah, keep on truckin' guys.
