Right now PC Gaming has two GPU manufacturers: AMD and NVidia. AMD is going to go under 1-2 years thanks to their terrible financials because they doubled down on their CPU side of things and failed. They do have nice APUs (if you enjoy a burning inferno inside your small or mobile PC), but their driver side was lacking early on after they bought out ATI. Now their drivers are okay to good. It has none of the flash of Nvidia, but at least they open up stuff to be open source (so they don't have to do the work). We're going to see a NVidia-only future possibly.
This is a bad thing. Nvidia already made their older GPUs (the 700 series) obsolete for game launches although they're only 3 years old. The Witcher 3, Batman Arkham Knight, and Ass Creed were the a few of the games gimped in the last year though you might not care for any of those titles. Why? Because it also gimped AMD. Hairworks and PhysX were some of the main culprits (since Nvidia does lock down both; seriously, look at PhysX. If their software detects AMD CPU chipset drivers it'll shutdown any GPU-driven PhysX). Shit's not good for the consumer.

Just recently they got their shit together, but a lot of people with the 700 series have been having problems more or less since MGSV release (a bit after actually, can't remember the exact date). I don't keep up with PC gaming anymore, since besides VNs it feels like pretty much every Japanese game is just a late port, but there's still gotta be some things being made that people will want. I could totally see an MMO finally coming out that's different and revitalizes the genre or something. I wouldn't mind giving games like Rust and DAYZ a shot if they were on consoles too. It's just that my main focus is Japanese games and I don't see PCs ever overtaking handhelds and consoles as their main focus.
At least with a PC you can play a lot of the games through emulators if you don't mind waiting too. I'm guessing PS4 should have a decent emulator someday not too far in the future, so game like Summon Night 6 and stuff like that shouldn't be impossible to play on a PC (before PS3 will anyway).

nVidia gave the card 2 memory pools with different interfaces and the second one is slower which makes the vram speed drop once it's in use, it's not even the first time. If memory won't fail me they did the same with either the 660 or the 650 and some other older GPU. The gimping isn't in the "3.5GB" because it has 4 perfectly usable GBs but it is in the sudden performance drop once you're past 3.5 fucking up your frame rates in memory intensive games for no reason

I'm kind of the wrong person to defend PC gaming. I'm at the point where the thing I care the most about it is emulators. With Steam monopolizing everything and being forced into Windows 10 and all this shit, I don't see myself returning anytime soon.
Fuck the cost barrier on all this shit anyway. I paid around $120 for my Vita and $60 for my 3DS (both brand new) and they've provided me with more fun than anything PC or Console has for a long long time.
