Upgrading your weapon and upgrading your armor are totally different. Any reasonable person would upgrade their weapon at some point, but there's hardly any reason to upgrade your armor, it just doesn't affect the damage values enough to justify spending the resources.

When did you get invaded in DeS? The online is a ghost town, I couldn't even find someone to play as the Old Monk. Only invader I got was in 1-4 when I was already in the elevator up to the boss, the guy just gave up and left.

When I was looking around for games on the ps3, I searched around for action rpg's, and fun combat. What I found and played was LOTR:Conquest, Armored Core 4FA (old fan from AC2), Gran Turismo Pre5 (I consider it action adventure, formula ones), Demon Souls, and Vanquish, oh and MAG.
I knew what Vanquish was like going in, and boy was it enjoyable. That is how you make an action game. I was sucked in for 2 weeks, I refused to play anything else, and this was maybe a few months after or before dark souls ps3 release, I can't remember.
I played cs 1.6 a lot, and I value a game that has good mechanics. Vanquish let's you move freely in the world, and fast. It is snappy, I could glide across the floor and land behind a 3 foot wall. It's a game of options: I'd strafe boost left or right for a quick shot, toss a cig to distract enemies, toss a nade and shoot it in the air AFTER jumping above the wall while in adrenaline mode.
No other game let's you do this kinda stuff. Also, shotguns with high sensitivity is one hell of a fun time.

AC4:FA is fun. AC4 is less fun because the missions are more boring.
LOTR:Conquest is a really fun fighting action game. There are 4 classes you learn to play as, and the campaign is pretty awesome to go through (also very nostalgic, 99% accurate to the movie areas). Mage, assassin, archer, warrior. They all have like 20 different moves similar to super smash bros. melee, dodging/rolling, long range hits etc.
My most fun in that was online multiplayer, but you can't. Offline multiplayer is still fun, try the heroes team deathmatch, get to play as all characters in the book basically from gandalf to the mouth of sauron and sauron himself.
