Just got the Kanger Subtank Mini about 3 weeks ago. I love the ease of use, and flavor I get using this thing, for about two days or less. I feel like I have to rebuild this thing every day or so because after 42 hours of casual vaping my coils look like pic related.

I've heard people say they run 20+ tanks through their subtanks using the RTA section, and others say they go months before they rebuild their tank, and say they only do it because of boredom.

I have to constantly rebuild my subtank mini because in two days or less time it starts tasting burnt and gross.

TLDR: What am I doing wrong? Is it normal to have to rebuild this often because of a burnt tasting coil with casual vaping?

Specs:

7 wraps of 28g Kanthal

1.4ohms

japanese cotton

vaping at around 4.2v (12 Watts)

I have the same tank and your coil looks like mine does after 7+ days.

Next time you build a coil, maybe try 6 wraps if that does not get the desired results try 5…

Also, your coil looks a bit sloppy, try and get all the wire to just barely touch each other. It can be a bit tricky at first but practice makes perfect as they say…

Also I notice the wire from your coil is protruding from the screw quite a bit. Get that cut as close as you can 'cos there is very little space between the coil build and the housing that screws on. Maybe it is just touching and is shorting a bit?

My build for the Kanger is:

5wraps 28g kanthal round a 2mm approx screwdriver.

0.8ohms

Jap cotton

Firing at 4.2v at about 15 - 17watts

I change my wick about every 3 or 4 days.

Anyway hope you can sort your problem out. Good luck bro.

Thanks, I will have to try a tighter wrapped coil, what is your method for wicking your subtank?

I pull the cotton through, put the chimney part on, cut the ends of the wick where they just go over the chimney, then gently stuff the cotton down, leaving space for the juice channels. I don't get any dry hits, but I wonder if I may be using too much cotton.

Yeah I wick mine the same way.

If it feels a bit tight in the coils a good tip I learned was get a really sharp pointed thingy (technical term) and gently scrape a few strands of cotton out of the wick.

Sort of thin it out a bit.

Works pretty well and saves you pulling it out completely and possibly damaging the coil and having to start your build over again.

Meh, it works for me anyway.

Just thought of a good tip I learned a few months ago about using straightened Kanthal wire that may help you get a better coil build.

My coils have been much better since I started using straight wire.

Can't be bothered to type out an explanation so here's a YouTube vid.

Trust me it's awesome.

The cotton is in too tight, this causes a reduced flow of liquid and consequently burns earlier. I've only had it look like in your picture when using it between 40 to 50 watts. Normal use for me is between 20-25 watts and my builds last me about a month.

I use a 5 wrap coil at 0.5 Ohm. Still using the original coil that came in the box.
