What do you think of my flags /vex/? What could be improved?

The Blue and Red one was my original flag that I had made for a made up nation of mine. It id the first draft and most of the mistakes have been fixed, like the 45° bars not being 45°.

The Yellow and Blue flag was a quick draft of a new nation. I originally had a dark red as the field, but used a complementary colour instead. I liked the emblem on the hoist area the most, but was wondering if it should be in the middle.

>>419

I like the yellow and blue one. Design is very similar to the Prussian and Nazi War Ensign, as it is now. I don't think it would work as well if it was in the middle. Colour scheme is good, maybe emblem could have different colour.

As for the blue and red one, there's something off about it. First, there's loads of white and red stripes with varying thickness; I'm not sure if this is your intention or just sloppy work. Why does the vertical bar have thin white stripes, but the horizontal one doesn't? Also, there's too much blue on the fly side. Makes the flag look off balance. It would work better as a square flag, if you ask me. Or perhaps, if you cut the right half into pennants, like the Swedish Royal Standard. Try some more variations.

I did this today, I was bored.

This is the first flag I ever do, so criticism would be nice

 No.414

Fugg, forgot to explain it.

These are some fictional flags for the Second Mexican Empire.

They have the Cross of Burgundy, which was the flag of New Spain. The colours are the same as the ones from the original Mexican tricolour and the coat of arms is the same as the Second Empire's flag.

 No.415

What program did you use?

It's by far the easiest to design flags in vector graphics editors, like inkscape. As a bonus, Wikipedia has most of its flags done in that same program, so you can just start working from those flags. A lot of coats of arms are converted to .svg as well.

Unfortunately 8chan still doesn't allow .svg uploads because it's possible to put some nasty html in them. I guess if you didn't allow them to show inline it would be fine, but oh well. Perhaps in infinity-next.

Visual appeal wise, I like the 3rd one the most for some reason. Perhaps just because the green Cross of Burgundy looks unique and it also works well with black and gold from the coat of arms. Granted, it's just a mashup of existing designs (pretty reasonable if you want to keep the symbolism) and not built from scratch, but it works well.

While we're at it, here's another Mexican Empire flag I found on deviantart. There's loads of flag/CoA/map autism there and some of it is pretty top notch.

 No.393[Reply]

Classical heraldry starts around 1100 when shield designs became tied to noble lineages. But the practice of decorating your shield to make it recognisable is much older. Roman military units used distinctive shield markings. And Ancient Greek hoplites are depicted (both in contemporary and historic pictures) as having symbols painted on their shields.

Now, I know that Sparta used letter Lambda Λ (other name for Sparta was Lakedaimōn), and that Athenians used the little owl on their coins and generally as a symbol of their city. But, does anyone know of any other cities having their distinct symbols? Except for Spartans, there doesn't seem to be unity in what symbols hoplites had on their shields; were those inherited in a heraldic manner, from father to son, or were they completely arbitrary? I can't find a lot of useful info, maybe I just don't know what to look for.

Indeed, the Gaddafi's flag was somewhat more original. The current one looks like a mix between the pan-African flag and the ottoman empire.

In short, nations which never had chance of possessing a proper vexilllogy or heraldry, Coats of Arms attributed/proposed to some characters (like, how would a Western-style Coat of Arms of a Japanese Emperor looks like?), etc…

More here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attributed_arms we call it "heraldyka fantazyjna" (fantastical/fantastic/fantasy? heraldry)

Presenting some of my favourites, Babylonia, Etruria, Romania/Roman Empire (two variants, one used OTL by reconstructionist group, but I like their Flag) and (Old)/Baltic Prussia (used by modern-day reconstructionists of this language on the terrain of Kaliningrad Oblast and around).

Also, if someone HAVE saved most of those unsourced/uncertain origin Flags deleted from Wikicommons in good resolution/svg (like those of "Turkic Empires", previous set of Mughal Empire and others) PLEASE post it here, I can't find a way to find them now.

Wikipedia used to have many good flags which are now deleted, whereas shit like combining random flag with homo flag stays, I can't comprehend this.

>White, Dark Red and Heraldic Blue

>The white represents the human race, being the brightest colour aims to be the contrat point and the main part of the flag

>Red represents the planet itself and the rocky nd barren nature of it

>Blue is the water that will insuflate life to the planet with the terraformation

>The blue stripes flow from the white triangle to represent the human action on the planet to get liquid water and life to spring, while the main blue stripe divides the red, Mars, in two representing the new nature and from of the planet.

The idea is good, OP, but you should look for the symbolism in the actual flag, maybe it is important as a definitory point in the city history, you shouldnt trash that so quickly.

 No.348

>>347

It doesn't look like there's more to it than just the colours from the coat of arms doubling as a flag.

One could keep the old coat of arms and adopt a new flag anyway, so no symbolism is trashed.

Agreed, but the flag of OP has some symbolism on itself, since the roman theatre calls for the roman heritage. Obviously, this doesnt have to be a contradiction, but I thought it should be said.

The current flag is, like >>348 said, just the coat of arms on a flag.

The coat of arms is great, don't get me wrong, it is a great symbol of the roman heritage of the city, but this is more a flag by default than an actual flag.

Flag of Bohemia.

The blue triangle on hoist side was added when Czechoslovakia declared independence exactly because it was identical to the Polish flag. Slovakia didn't have a flag of their own before, I think. After dissolution, they were supposed to abandon the common symbols, but Czechs violated that because they don't have any other historical flag to use.

Moravia doesn't have its own flag either, and the unofficial one is identical to the flag of Prague (yellow and red). So they also can't just combine both flags.
